Unpopular opinion time: DS9 > TNG. I think DS9 was better overall, while TNG had better singular episodes. Plus, the characters/plots weren't limited by Roddenberry's rules from the start, and Quark is bae.

Some of Roddenberry's ideas for human behavior in early TNG were creepy as hell. The whole not mourning the dead and being incapable of arguing or having differing opinions sounds like a mashup of the Eloi from the Time Machine and the inhabitants of Oceania from 1984.

I agree, but I can see why someone wouldn't agree.
TNG is a much easier show to get into and like. You can usually ignore shit episodes being shit because each episode is its own story.
If you're an absolute pleb and don't like the serialized storytelling in DS9 then watching that all the way through is going to be much harder.
Also TNG is easier to rewatch because you can just skip episodes you don't like. I'm going to eventually have to watch Kira and Jake shoot lasers at each other and Sisko become Space Jesus on my DS9 rewatch. That shit somehow became story integral.

Hey everybody, wanna see Will Wheaton get triggered over a fucking LEGO figure?

I forgot Discovery was a thing until I saw it on RLM yesterday. That says something.

I saw they had three episodes, so I watched them. I find I don't dislike it as much as the first episodes. I think it's still trying to be too much, if that makes any sense. There were some interesting twists and I like how they portrayed some things.
The Terran Empire.

Some people already predicted some of the outcomes, but I'll spoiler them. It's getting to be gritty cable TV serial more and more in that they're swearing more and killing off main characters.
  • The gay doctor bites it at the hands of:
  • Ash Tyler, who actually is a surgically-altered Voq, that albino Klingon.
  • Lorca is actually the Mirror Lorca, sent to fuck things up in the Prime universe.
The Mycelial Network looks like it is being destroyed by Mirror Stamets, which is why you don't have that super-secret awesome tech in the future series.

It looks like the Terran Empire could be seen more as a Hollywood view of "Trump's America". It's all racist and jingoist and happy to destroy any Xenos of the other races. They've been aware of "gaps" between the two universes and are building an inter-dimensional "wall", to keep out the alien-loving Federation. I wouldn't be surprised if that really is the analogy they're going for.

So the one straight white male lead actor in Star Trek Discovery turned out to be the bad guy all along?

I am shocked, I tell you, shocked. Who could have seen that one coming?

So I finished Season 1.
It got REALLY bad. Really really fucking bad. Mainly starting with the episode where they handwaved away the character flaws and interesting parts of Lorca as "Oh yeah he's just from the mirrorverse LOL". And then it just got fucking worse.

I’d heard the season finale was last night. Any especially dumb twists to share?

Uh they solve the Klingon/Federation war by putting a bomb in a volcano on Qo'nos that has the potential to make the planet an uninhabitable wasteland and kill almost everybody on the planet. And then they give the detonator to rape Klingon and tell her "Fucking get the Klingons' shit together with this bomb fag" and then leave. I was laughing so hard I had to pause.
Mirrorverse Georgiou (Captain in the pilot) is now in their universe and is going to come back probably. Ash left with Rape Klingon to do things because uhhhhh DRAMA. Lorca is dead because keeping around interesting characters is stupid LOL have some more MarySue Burnham. They still can use the Spore Drive at the end and have yet to explain why its not ever mentioned again in Star Trek. Oh yeah and the twist at the end was...
...
...
while the Discovery is bringing Sarek back to Vulcan they receive a distress signal. From a Federation ship. The signal is all fucked up and the ship registry slowly comes on their screen. "NCC-17...". And then they make contact with the ship. And it's the Enterprise of course. And the season ends with the original Star Trek theme.
That season was really bad though. It got better when they went to the Mirrorverse for like 2 episodes which I was expecting because if there's ANYTHING this Star Trek can do right its fucking Shadow the Edgehog tone. Then Lorca was revealed to be from the Mirrorverse like I said. And then everyone in the mirrorverse pretty much just started sucking off Michael Burnham's cock because my lord I've actually started to believe they just straight up pulled the writing staff from fanfiction.net. They took a break from sucking off Michael Burnham in the show only to go back to it towards the end IN FULL FORCE MOTHERFUCKER. The entire ending might as well be "Choo Choo, cock train coming through! Start sucking the Michael dick or die you prick!"

...that sounds like shit. Glad I avoided it.

Really need to watch Orville though.

Yeah it's shit, but it's something to watch and I'm hoping the next season is actually Star Trek now that they lazily threw the war in the trash.
The Orville on the other hand is something I would really recommend to anyone. Even if you don't like Seth's humor, the show actually gets Star Trek more than fucking Star Trek does. The last episode was bad, but it still was better than anything in Discovery.

Lorca was played by the same guy who played Lucius Malfoy. Of course he had to be evil.
After all, white, cis-gender males are responsible for all that is evil in the world.

Unfortunately we watched every episode. God damn, Michael Burnham sucks the air out of every scene and every episode's pacing with shitty Federation Boy Scout's Honor speeches. I don't even blame the actress, but she's written as a lecture on legs, how would anyone stand her ass for more than two minutes? Turning her into a paragon of Starfleet morality will only make her worse. It's a really baffling choice of main character; she doesn't work as an everyman audience insert, and she doesn't have an interesting position of authority like the typical Star Trek protag. So she just tells her bosses what to do every single episode. Don't get it.

Lorca and Evil Georgiou, and sometimes Tilly, were the only characters who did interesting things in their screentime. Stamets and Gay Doctor's B-plot felt like morality play to remind us that Being Gay is Okay... except it's 2018 and TV has caught up with that idea. Ash's whole character concept is goofy as fuck but was played straight (LOL @ reformed Ash playing with knots in his bunk :autism:). The bridge characters outside of Saru saw zero development. The time loop episode was the strongest and it had the least to do with the overall plot. Rainn Wilson seems to have fun in his role.

I really wanted mirror-Lorca's plan to be more interesting than just "take over as Emperor". Like, a one-man Lorca revenge train to kill the Emperor and peace back out to the prime universe, leaving chaos in his wake and keeping his post as starship captain, would have been awesome.

She’s Sarek’s adopted daughter, Spock’s stepsister, graduated Vulcan Academy with honors, knows more about subject matters than the subject matter experts, etc.
A purebred Mary-Sue if I ever did see one.

I don't even blame the actress

Nah she's fucking godawful. SMG's entire emotional range is "intense stare, agape mouth and wooden delivery"
A purebred Mary-Sue if I ever did see one.

Not only her hilariously fanfiction.net level backstory, but the sheer fact that basically the universe revolves around her and the plot constantly has her survive ridiculous shit basically because everyone loves her so much.
She started out as a Sympathetic Sue (Remember Burnham actually literally did nothing wrong and was completely right in her initial analysis of how to deal with the Klingons) and then over the course of the series it just turns into "Everyone loves Michael Burnham, she's amazing" show. Her "redemption" takes what? 2 episodes before she's effectively acting first officer of Discovery?

In fact, I think I've found the initial Pitch for Star Trek Discovery

"Gee, golly, gosh, gloriosky," thought Michael Burnham as she stepped on the bridge of the Discovery. "Here I am, the only human to graduate from the Vulcan Science Academy with record breaking scores" Captain Lorca came up to her.
"Oh, Specialist, I love you madly. Will you come to bed with me?"
"Captain! I am not that kind of girl!"
"You're right, and I respect you for it. Here, take over the ship for a minute while I go try take over the Mirror Universe for us to rule over together because I love you so much."
Mr. Saru came onto the bridge. "What are you doing in the command seat, Specialist?"
"The Captain told me to."
"Flawlessly logical. I admire your mind and I wish I was you and have always been jealous of you for it"

Captain Lorca, Commander Saru, Dr. Culbert and Ash Tyler beamed down with Specialist Burnham to Rigel XXXVII. They were attacked by Klingons and thrown into prison. In a moment of weakness Specialist Burnham revealed to Saru that she was in fact the secret sister of Spock that nobody had ever heard of and the favourite child of Sarek who Sarek loves far more than Spock. Recovering quickly, she sprung the lock with her hairpin and they all got away back to the ship.

But back on board, Dr. Culbert and Specialist Burnham found out that the men who had beamed down were seriously stricken by the jumping cold robbies , Burnham less so. While the four officers languished in Sick Bay, Specialist Burnham ran the ship, and ran it so well she received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Vulcan Order of Gallantry and the Tralfamadorian Order of Good Guyhood, She also in this time ends the Klingon-Federation War.

Specialist Burnham back on Earth gives the best speech ever at Federation Headquarters and the entire Federation stands up and applauds her. Till this very day, Specialist Burnham's birthday is considered a national holiday of the Federation. - Bryan Fuller, Star Trek Discovery pitch, 2015.

Surprising that they went balls deep on the mirror universe stuff. After its initial episode it was basically just a goofy concept that the writers sometimes pulled out when they got bored and/or the actors wanted to have some fun. Not exactly something a show that wants to put emphasis on a central narrative should base several plot points on. The fact that they wanted to make a serious and dark Star Trek, saw the mirror universe and went "yes, like that!" speaks volumes.

Late to the thread, but who ever recommended the old Star Trek adventure games is spot on. All original cast and with none of the adventure game moon logic that plagues the genre.

That sounds dreadful. I didn't even know they were making a new series until reading this thread, I don't really keep track of Trek anymore.

I think Bryan Fuller wanted to make a serious and dark Star Trek and the last 1/2 of the season was the new writers trying to lighten the tone a bit and hit the reset button on most of the plot for Season 2.

Most Trekkies atm I suspect.
Seriously if Orville didn't have the unfunny Seth McFarlane/Fox humour, it would legit be a worthy successor to Star Trek.
I would like to see Orville ratings compared with Disco, apparently Orville was a massive ratings hit.

I just watched the first episode of Discovery. I can't wait to see how badly they try to force current-year politics into this. Once I finish this season, I'm going to binge DS9.
