DS9 goes into overdrive when sisko moves his hair from his head to his face. Season 3 to me is the start of the steady climb that peaks in season 6 (7 is good but less so)

Now I am into sason 2 and the quality skyrocketed. I genuinely had "feels" in the "Paradise" episode with the holographic girl missing her mom and the episode with the obrian replicant was also great. I actually thought he had some kind of hallucinatory illness that made him become paranoid
You're in so much luck if you enjoy horrible things happening to O'Brien and Sisko doing morally ambiguous stuff.

I've been working my way through DS9. Unlike TOS and TNG, I had never seen any of the show before this year.

So I'm at Season 4 and I just watched "The Visitor"....

Holy crap, I was not ready for that level of feels!

That episode made me wish I had a father and the ability to feel things and that made me feel sad.

I couldn't give an exact page, but I too here (within the past few months or so) have expressed how many feels this exact episode has given me.

Star Trek noob here, I've only dipped my toe into the franchise but I've always found it interesting have been meaning to dive into it.

But I have a question, is it worth it to watch TOS first or would it be ok to start with TNG?

I would definitely want to watch TOS at some point, but TNG is what interests me the most since that's what I was first exposed to as a kid.

I don't think you'll miss much. You won't get a few of the intended reactions, especially when TOS characters show up, but there's very few of those. References can work both ways and there's a huge historical gap between TOS and TNG, so it's no big deal. TNG is a long show though so you can always pace yourself with some TOS episodes in-between like I did, since they'e both super episodic.

Also, Old Jake Sisko is the Candy Man...
...and Worf's brother.

You can watch TNG first and TOS later. Outside of one or two episodes I don't think there are a lot of references to TOS anyway.

Yeah, given the details, I think its going to be the Q angle.
Do you think Kurtzman knows about Q? I bet he thinks it's the Q anon conspiracy.

Probably, Q was in the first and last episodes of TNG(the extent of research). Also, John De Lance does tend to make an impression...

This is going to turn into a nerd debate(no it won't). If you want relevance for the Picard series, then just sticking to TNG is enough...

Here is the thing: the first two seasons of TOS is some of the best television writing ever. The last season, season 3, is an absolute nightmare though(skip or watch for comedy). Watching the two seasons of TOS for 'The City on the Edge of Forever', is worth it alone. Plus, it has better characters(in my opinion) and dynamics than TNG, as well as being more accessible.

TNG is mostly shit, but that could be argued for Trek in general. It has a really mediocre first two seasons. But, when Roddenberry was kicked out, found its own way. It has a really strong middle run, which began to lose its steam by closing seasons(but it has a strong finale). TNG, definitely has some gems though...

When watching TNG(to save yourself the time and avoid the significant amount of filler), I would get a fan roadmap(cliff notes if you will) which will make you watch only narratively critical or high quality episodes. Plus, one's love for the characters will vary(but thats preference).

Interestingly enough, one of the longest spanning and most consistent Trek series was DS9....

Probably the most significant is the 2parter with Spock. So I'd actually recommend maybe a quick TOS movie run first (just #2, 3, 4 & 6) then TNG should probably work out well for ya.

Then watch the animated series if you want to experience drugs without taking them. ;)

Yeah, but in the context of the TNG, it can still work without any TOS knowledge. The dramatic entry may not work as well, nor the Scotty episode....

Oh shit I've forgotten those two episodes. Yeah I think there are a few TOS episodes (like "Balance of Terror") that should be watched before.

Balance of Terror & Journey to Babel I'd mark down as must sees since Spock's father also shows up in a TNG episode before Spock does.

Or like I said, the movies. Which are totally kick ass and enjoyable.

Filler? TNG is an episodic television show. There is nothing there to "fill," you dunderhead.

Fan roadmaps are dumb because a dude who has watched every episode a dozen times is going to have a vastly different concept of what's "good" than someone watching it for the first time.

Some episodes are certainly more relevant than others, the subplots with Yar, Q, Wesley, Data, Borg have narrative progression. Other stuff(quite a bit)are independent jaunts that have no bearing on subplots. How does the episode of "Genesis" have any significant impact? Its not even well written...

Granted, you can say that TOS(minus season 3) is mostly just filler(or nothing but). But the filller in TOS, in my opinion, is significantly better than anything in TNG.

I mean is it really worth slogging through entire first two seasons(save for a handful of episodes)? TNG, didnt even work out its dynamic until halfway through season three.

But each his own, I'm not going to get into a sperg war over this....

So you believe that some theoretical TASHA YAR SUBPLOT was the overriding narrative of TNG, and everything that doesn't advance the TASHA YAR SUBPLOT is unnecessary filler? Dude, get a fucking grip on reality. Character continuity is not a subplot. Furthermore, somebody who doesn't know who Tasha Yar is isn't going to give a flying fuck about the TASHA YAR SUBPLOT.

You know what, I'm going to spoil the TASHA YAR SUBPLOT for our friend right now. Denise Crosby thought she was too good for Star Trek and asked to leave the show. The producers obliged and killed off her character. In a shocking twist, this dumb bitch didn't become the next Mira Sorvino. She constantly begged the producers of TNG to bring her back. Eventually they took pity on her and had her show up whenever they went back in time or to an alternate reality.
