That was essentially Onslaught and Heroes Reborn in a nutshell. Marvel took the Avengers and Fantastic Four off the main board for a year and placed them in a pocket universe while bigger properties like Spider-Man and X-Men continued on as normal. The Thunderbolts were an almost perfect subversion, the Masters of Evil disguise themselves a superheroes as part of Zemo's world conquest plot. Luke Cage and Iron Fist got another shot at Heroes for Hire. It always struck me as bad timing that the first volume New Warriors was cancelled around this time with Marvel's bankruptcy. They were to the Avengers what the Teen Titans were to the Justice League, granted, none of them were sidekicks. The "death" of the Avengers forced them to step up in a big way and while they made some appearances post-Onslaught in Thunderbolts, no one ran with the premise.
