Can anyone figure out the total number of subs? Doubt it was enough to compensate for kinda lackluster runs and finale.

Skipped the whole thing, so if anyone can recommend a bunch of runs (to watch or avoid), I'd appreciate it. Avoiding runs that are contaminated if possible.

I only watched sporadically, but from what I saw Yoshi's Island race and Mega Man 1-3 relay race were fun. There were a few other fun runs, but those two really stick out to me.

Metal Gear Solid 3, Skyrim and Ultima 6 are potentially worth a watch because of how awful they were.

In MGS3, the guy goes into a nervous breakdown because he keeps failing and says he doesn't deserve to be there, and also gets a donation from his wife saying that if he doesn't a sub 1:20 he's sleeping on the couch (he got 1:25).

Skyrim the guy actually activates god mode, so he literally cheats during the run openly.

Ultima 6 was astounding because it was ran by a troon who tried to femme up his voice by phrasing everything as a question. Sounded like he was trying to emulate a valley girl on morphine.

EDIT: I missed it myself, but I've seen a lot of people say Fallout 2 was the best run of the event.

Now that it's over, time to compare stats.

Donations went up by 2%, maximum viewership went down by 20%. Less social media engagement overall and very sad chat statistics thanks to sub only mode.

So they went down in terms of viewers overall, and had less interactions via social media? Do you happen to know if watching the stream on one of the hosted channels (such as Trihex's channel with open chat) counted toward the total viewership? I'm not surprised that sub-only chat mode severely kneecapped the level of interaction directly on Twitch, but the lack of support on Twitter is pretty shocking especially considering the fact that Twitter is kind of the "home base" for the cretins who were championing AGDQ's "inclusiveness".

The event has seen pretty regular growth over the past few years and even though they marginally edged out last year's total it wasn't by a considerable margin. Hopefully this is the stagnation that will eventually lead to underperformance for AGDQ 2019.

I'm pretty sure hosting counts for overall viewership but I'm not sure how the restreams who do their own commentary work.

I've watched most of the marathon and have double-backed to watch the VOD's of runs that I wanted to see but missed live, so here's a list of runs that I found to be worth watching. Full list of VOD links are in this Reddit post.

In order of original broadcast:
  • Aladdin (100%) -- Pretty close to what you'd call a "bread and butter" speed game. 100% category is great to watch because there's a lot of tricky jumps and tricks to collect all the red gems.
  • Donkey Kong Country 2 (Any% Race) -- DKC runs are always pretty great to watch. This race was between two very skilled players and it remained pretty close all the way through.
  • Donkey Kong Country (Any% RBO) -- If you're into the weird sort of glitches and exploits that you can do in the original DKC then this might be worth checking out. It's not the best run, but was interesting to me.
  • Dynamite Headdy (Any%) -- One of my personal favorite games from the Genesis. Fantastic graphics, great music, really unique game. Worth checking out if you're a fan of the console and are looking for a sleeper hit.
  • Castlevania: SOTN (Zero Bosses) -- The runner somehow manages to find a skip for every single mandatory boss in the game except for Dracula at the end of the inverted castle. Like the DKC run, it's interesting from a technical standpoint.
  • Resident Evil 7 (NG+ Madhouse) -- Carcinogen is an amazingly talented RE runner and while he's got a handful of screwups in this run it was still a lot of fun. He's got a great personality and a solid couch for this run.
  • Toy Story (Any%) -- Was pretty surprised with this run. The runner had a lot of fun with it and there's a surprisingly large amount of detail and background that he and the couch get into regarding the speed tech in this game.
  • Super Mario World 2 (Any% Warpless Race) -- 4-way Yoshi's Island race, I don't need to say much more than that. One of the major highlights of the marathon for me.
  • Animorphs: Shattered Reality (Any%) -- The runner seems to purposefully do bad/meme games, he showed up to a previous GDQ with the Game Boy version of this game and his RNG was so bad that he went way over estimate and they had to mercy kill his run. Still, for some reason they allowed him back and this run is hilarious.
  • Titenic (Any%) -- Part of the Awful Games Done Quick block. This is a pirate NES game made by Hummer Team about the 1997 movie Titanic. It's terrible and full of broken English and overall was just a total laughfest at how absurd it all was. The copy of the game used was modified to censor nudity in a pretty amusing way, too.
  • I Wanna Be the Boshy (100%) and I Wanna Run the Marathon (Any%) -- The I Wanna Be The Guy lineage (called "Fangames") are like platforming hell. Needlessly difficult, filled with booby traps, and just relentless. And yet there are still people out there who not only run these games, but do them at the highest difficulties and for 100%. Just incredible.
  • The Addams Family (All Bosses) -- If you can get over Garbanzcurity's deep Southern drawl this is a really neat run of a great game that lots of people just overlooked because it was a movie tie-in.
  • Mega Man 1-3 Relay Race -- 12 of the best Mega Man runners in the world show up to particpate in a 4-way relay race where teams of three runners each take turns beating the first three Mega Man games on the NES. What's not to love?
  • Mike Tyson's Punch Out + Super Punch Out (2 Games 1 Controller) -- Zallard plays both of the games in the Punch Out boxing series at the same time using only one input. Not really as exciting of a run as it might sound, but again this is another one on this list by its technical merits.
  • Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko (Any% No Wrong Warp) -- I loved this series when I was younger and there's quite a few interesting sequence breaks and glitches in this run that I never knew about. Overall it makes for a neat experience.
  • Super Mario Land 2 (Any% Glitchless) -- Usually when this game gets showcased it's the short few-minute version where the runner glitches the game and goes straight to the credits. This run actually shows off the full game and all six worlds are completed along with the final boss. Great run of an equally great game.
  • Princess Rescue (Any%) -- This is Darbian's run of a homebrew Atari 2600 game that plays like Super Mario Bros. The fact that someone was able to "port" SMB onto the Atari 2600 (looks like it was possibly done using Batari Basic tools?) is amazing and this is an awesome run both because the game is great and Darbian is a respected runner in his own right.
  • Super Dram World 2 (100%) -- Grandpoobear is another runner who is very well respected and a lot of fun to watch. His specialty are "Kaizo" Mario games and Super Mario Bros 3, which he streams nearly every day. Dram World 2 is one of many extra hard Kazio romhacks and seeing it completed with 31 (I think) deaths is just incredible. Great couch commentary on this one too.

That about does it for the biggies for me. There were lots of other runs that I personally enjoyed, but they were not "wow" enough to make the list. In case you're curious what those were here's a quick and dirty collection: Wario's Woods, Resident Evil 3, Little Nemo, Mitsume Ga Tooru, Kid Icarus, Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers, Snake Rattle N' Roll, Arabian Nights, Dog's Life, Bubsy II, The Blues Brothers, Athena, Deadly Towers, Umihara Kawase, Star Fox 2, Super Monkey Ball, Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario World.

I'd add to that list Arabian Nights (its one of your honorable mentions but for me was one of the highlights of the marathon, a hilariously broken and glitched game with great commentary by the runner, I've already talked it up in previous posts though so I'll bow out now,) and the Zelda LttP randomizer run (which remained incredibly close right up until the end.) I'd also second the RE VII run, Dram World 2 and I Wanna Be the Boshi/Run the Marathon. The Fire Emblem run was also probably the best you'll ever get out of an RPG run so you might want to check that out as well.

Steer clear of the Superman 64 run (game is nowhere near as fun to watch as the rest of awful block was,) the Ultima run, the long ass JRPG runs and the Zelda run at the end. Honestly I'd skip the Megaman and Mario World runs too, I can respect a run that just comes down to playing the game very well but its not exactly the most interesting to watch.

The only gripe I really had with Arabian Nights is that once you've seen the handful of breaks and glitches you've sorta seen them all, and from there the game is just dreadfully long and is just more of the same. I still enjoyed the run, but it wasn't a personal highlight for me (though I will say when the game crashed and then the resolution got all fouled up I found it pretty hilarious).

Seconding skipping on Superman 64 though. Everyone knows the game to be among the "worst ever" (if not THE worst ever) but the problem with the run is that Superman 64 is a punchline that you'll get within five minutes of playing it. This run is nearly 40 minutes long. It overstays its welcome by a huge margin and just becomes tedious to watch, even if Spikevegeta somehow managed to remain excited for the entire run.

I thought Dragon Warrior was impressive. The guy kept track of an incredible amount timing and rng manipulation, essentially hitting everything perfectly to finish the game in less than half an hour. Keep in mind, this is a world record that he initially had at 5~ hours, and he's managed to cut it down that much by just running the game again and again to recognize rng chains. Pretty interesting stuff. And as a bonus, he's talking about his strategy and explaining his run almost constantly, meaning Protomagicalgirl (who was reading donatons at the time) only gets to talk for like 45~ seconds in total.

I watched that because I'd never actually seen the game in action and agree that it's no fun to watch.

The one really funny bit that I didn't know about it though: It has a built-in resolution-switcher like oldschool DOS games used to have for software rendering. At one point they have to set it to 10% native resolution (48x36 pixels!) to get the framerate up to the point where it's playable, and the runners all comment that they're used to playing it at that resolution because it's the only resolution where the game doesn't lag for most missions.

The fact that a company actually shipped an N64 game that struggles to push 30FPS at 48x36 is really something.

Dilate with me
Set plebs free
help skavenger escape from PMG

we'll make it through Infamous too
Hype plz

Also personally id recommend the pj run of battletoads arcade but that may be more because i always think pjs runs are a highlight because you know something will break ut you never know what.
Prinny 2 is also pretty cool just has a lot of tight platforming that i find interesting to watch. And ill also second warios woods surprisingly entertaining for a puzzle game.

The publishers actually put a lot of money into Superman 64 and it was an ambitious game. Indeed, with the open world map it comes off more like a really shit PS2 game than a really shit N64 one. In theory its an interesting case, but as I said previously, its just no fun to watch.

What do you mean boring? You mean you don't like events slowly dying by pushing out the best players and adding in muh diversity?
