Being a speedrunner is like being a retard who can solve a Rubik's Cube real fast.
 
I've seen a couple friends get excited over the girl speedrunning Dark Souls 3, like specifically pointing out she's a girl and really happy about knowing this fact. Honestly, I'm excited and glad, too, to see a woman showcasing playing a game defined as being really hard within the community.

The bidding closes in about 10 minutes. It's at least appropriate given that a scene with Edward is where Spoony got his handle, but after he bitched about not getting his name in Ultima VI he sure as shit doesn't deserve it.

I'm watching just to see if the chat has any reaction.

E: They've opened a donation incentive to "save/kill the Yoshi" in the Super Dram World 2 TASbot runs. That's beyond desperate.

E: "SPOONY" won, but apparently it's because "spoony" is a meme and not as a reference to Spoony the guy.

I think they decide on donation incentives ahead of time so I wouldn't call it desperate (if anything they are very well on point to surpass last marathon's totals right now.) It lacks meme potential though just because Super Dram World is an obscure rom hack instead of one of the most beloved games of all time AND one of the most beloved speed games of all time.
 
Looks like FFIV isn't such a hit with viewers... Its only going to get worse as we sit through five minutes of glitched text boxes. Thats as many people tuning out as you would usually get from people going to bed at three a.m.


Thats not to say that RPG runs should be excluded, just that its dumb to put longer ones on in what should be prime times.

The thing with RPG runs is that by and large there needs to be a lot of content that is visually interesting to laymen, as these are generally pretty long games and there's often not much to look at in the way of exciting action. People get bored with staring at the same Final Fantasy game for 2+ hours. You've either gotta have some solid/amusing commentary, frequent and interesting glitches, or have one of those rare exceptions and run an RPG that is actually fun to watch.

Also "Re: Dark Souls 3's runner", I am pretty certain she is the only woman runner in attendance at AGDQ 2018. Skybilz is also involved with the show this year, but she's reading donations (and I think was on the couch for a run today or yesterday, not sure). For all the "inclusion" that the event is trying to hamfist into their dumb show the best they can muster is a staggering one female speedrunner. It's upsetting that AGDQ 2018 is on track to meet or beat last year's total because this kind of shit should not be encouraged at all.

edit: And I turn on the stream to see if the Link to the Past randomizer is starting and I'm greeted with fucking Proto. Again.
 
There's also Edobean as a hostess but I don't know if she actually speedruns or if she's just one of those celebrities who exists.
 
Super Dram World 2 by Grandpoobear is on right now. I'm not sure how familiar you all are with "kaizo" romhacks of Super Mario World, but the Dram series is pretty well put together and Grandpoobear is a fantastic streamer. Really charismatic and knows his Mario games in and out.

If you can't catch this one live, it's one to check out on the VOD's afterward for sure.
 
Its good and its at least the second time one of the Dram games made it in. Maybe we could see a race next time around?

edit: And SGDQ 2017 donation total surpassed. We saw that coming since around Wed/Thurs and here it is. Now imagine how much MORE they could have had if Super Metroid was here.
 
They're just shy of $1.8m with like 4 1/2 hours left in the marathon. They might match the last AGDQ's total with last minute big donos and Twitch subs tallied up.
 
These last ftwo runs are bullshit from a speed perspective. The Dram guy spent time just standing around to read the text box jokes (which were funny, of course, but so were a lot of earlier games that skipped through theirs.) And now the Zelda guy just literally loaded another file when he was only forty seconds out from his latest save. On the last game of the night, when stuff is supposed to be hype. Also peak viewing time will have been the fucking Souls block. Yeah, I salty.

edit: Hahaha horse name sniped, salt redeemed.

Donations went up by 2%, maximum viewership went down by 20%. Less social media engagement overall and very sad chat statistics thanks to sub only mode.
