I imagine the atmosphere for the actual runners being pretty abysmal, where you have to carefully cradle your speech to stop the overly sensitive staff from going nuclear.
And it gets even worse when you consider that people paid a lot of money for attendance, travel and their hotel room, and getting kicked out because some autistic staffer had an axe to grind means it's all wasted.

I think that some of the GDQ staff have started going on power trips since the event became prominent. If you show even a little bit of resistance while you're doing your run, they go nuts. They're the holy, untouchable knights promoting charity- the runners should just be glad they even have the opportunity to be there. It's not all of them certainly, but it only takes one wrong person with a little bit of power to make things go wrong. Bonesaw getting banned last year is a good example, as well as that guy who ran SMB last year getting banned for mentioning that he runs another game he was hoping would be on the GDQ schedule next time and Gamepro011 who did that cringey Crash Bandicoot run at SGDQ 2015. I mean, maybe don't let the guy do runs again, but banning him outright from the event? Uncalled for, IMO. All of these people, like you said, pay for their trip out of pocket. They physically go somewhere: they buy a ticket, book a hotel room, and practice hard so they won't screw up on stage. Getting banned from the event for something minor or a personal issue with the staff is a slap in the face.

There's logic to the rules GDQ has, but they're executed in the most retarded ways. You need some leniency, policing things the way they do just severely takes away from the event. Banning people like Azorae (Who apparently didn't actually get banned, but the point still stands) who don't really seemingly deserve it only calls you into question when you make legitimate bans and just makes you look bad.

Today should hopefully be good. Katamari was fun, I want to really see Dark Messiah, FNV, System Shock 2, and Doom. Probably only going to watch Halo 2 tomorrow and Nightfire/Korra the day after. Just realized the Furi run is at 4 am for me. Considering breaking my sleep schedule just to watch it, I really love Furi and I did a few shitty speedruns of that game myself.

I'd wish GDQ would actually trim up the VODs first before uploading them to YouTube or at least put in their descriptions when the actual run starts. I'm tired of having to skip through or look at the comments for when the runs begin. It's annoying when a third (or sometimes half) of the video is nothing but them reading off donations while they prepare the game.

I don't think the staff understands that without the speedrunners, there is no charity. If they're going to start banning people for retarded, arbitrary reasons, eventually they're gonna have no runners left, and it will be entirely their fault.

It's a shame that the runners can't just be casual (within reason). God forbid someone makes an off-color joke or something. It's a bunch of goddamn socially-awkward nerds playing vidya. Give these people a fucking break. They're only human. I get that the charities they're raising money for want things to be, well, inoffensive, but at the same time it's like people can't say shit without carefully picking which words to say on the off chance they trigger some snowflake.

On topic, I was meaning to watch GDQ, but I just can't really be arsed. I've been too busy playing FFXV like a fucking faggot. I'll probably watch a few of the VODs, though, provided they aren't too cringy.

Were the runners of Battleblock Theater banned? I mean, they had a conversation with Stamper with wasn't the most kid friendly kind at some points (most poop humor, though) so I'm a bit unsure fo their fate.

You should have added "co-op players make up new category to get a world record" because that seems to happen every year.
Also a good contender would be 'runner holds the ONLY world record for the game they're running' as well as 'tranny on the runner couch'

Big Jon commentating the Mega Man X race and now everything is ten times better

Megaman X race is one of the FEW things I actually have a real interest in seeing.
Also, Big Jon makes EVERYTHING better.

Do people actually do speedruns without at least playing through the game normally once? It seems really dumb for someone to speedrun a game, but know nothing about something like the story.

There's been at least 4 runs just from the ones I've watched where the runner and the couch were like "I don't know the story".

The better known the game is, the harder it is to get a record for it. Best way for a mediocre player to look good is to play a game no one has heard of.
