It does certainly seem to be going in that direction. For an event intended for young adult gamers they are going further from their base each year. Heck, you can speedrun a game rated for teenagers but you can't even swear on the stream.

Money did a lot of harm to GDQ in that sense. It went from being a speedrunning event with charity based incentives to a charity event that draws in donations through speedrunning, and that can make a world of difference when it comes to how the rules are made and upheld.
Mr. Shasta was also showcased at a previous GDQ. He is a Kirby speedrunner. I used to follow him for a while but he got a little too far out for my tastes and patience.

Indeed, what's worse is that if you look at PCF's 2016 IRS forms you'll find that AGDQ2016 made up ~20% of their total yearly revenue. So this is how GDQ wants it to be like, PCF can't really force them to do anything.
