GameStop has a plan.
  • Purchase PS5s direct from Sony (duh)
  • Open up them.
  • Resell them as "preowned"
  • Profit.
They've done this before with the initial NA release of Xenoblade Chronicles if i remember correctly, they'd be happy to do it with an entire console sought after due to GTA VI.
I saw someone post that they were over a thousand dollars used. LMFAO

Be interesting to see how this works without any physical copies of GTA VI, especially with the precedent being set this gen for letting existing owners upgrade for free.

From a base PS5 to PISSER-enhanced sure, but wasn't it the exact opposite when going from 4 to 5? Rockstar's probably going to have no upgrade path for the 'real', PS6 version and make you pay the full $90 when the time comes.

All of these heartfelt "just build a PC at this point" comments are hitting joe sixpack like the gale force wind gust of a delayed Winter in the northeastern shore. He will go to best buy, nab himself a laptop or maybe even go through with building a PC, only to be greeted by poosoft's Windows 11, the incurable leprosy of this age.

Publishers tried early on to charge for next-gen upgrades but got so much grief most caved in. I've tested a few of my PS4 games, like RE2/3make, and they let me upgrade to the PS5 version for free.

I think this only applies to discs though: when FF7 Remake landed on PS+ you had to pay to upgrade, but if you had a PS4 disc it was free, so that's probably what they'll do with the PS6. Depends how many marks buy the console at launch.

The PS5 and PS5PRO will be able to hit 60fps/have a perfomance/quality mode, but Rockstar and T2 won't allow it. If they do, they lose a hook for the inevitable double and triple dipping that they're banking on.
PC will have 60fps but miss some features and then PS6/Nextbox will have a GOTY version with 60fps and all of the bells and whistles.

Corporations are reaching levels of scummy that this premise is entirely feasible. The concept of delivering the best product to your costumers on day 1 as a means to gain their loyalty has become a thing of the past. Most products now barely clear the bar of being "minimally viable" with missing, incomplete and paywalled features and I really cannot blame the corpos for it because they realized the vast majority of consumers are undiscerning cattle that will throw money at the new trendy thing the moment it is available.

Normies gotta normie. Buying a laptop is the most they'll do, Joe six pack ain't building shit, let alone going through the process of installing Windows. They want to buy something, take it out of the box, hit the power button and for it to just work. That's why consoles still are a viable business model, most people want the least amount of friction when it comes to their entertainment.

As much as I am an evangelist for Linux and open source, I have to continually remind myself I'm part of a very small exception of users that actually cares about this kind of stuff. Overwhelmingly "using a PC" is synonymous with using Windows and no matter how good things have gotten in the Linux side of gaming, normies want familiarity.

One look at the Steam hardware survey regarding OS use paints a grim picture as to how dominant Windows still is for gaming.

Over 95% Windows dominance. While it is still surprising how many people are still clinging to Win10, I'll bet they will end up installing Win11 or even wait for Win12 before ever touching Linux, which as shown in the data has gone down across the board meaning some tried it and went back to Windows.

I haven't bought anything from Gamestop for almost two decades because of this kind of shit. I distinctly remember the last time I tried to buy a new game from them, and they produced an empty jewel case, started to slip the manual and a disc into it and then started to ring it up. "Uh, no, I want a new copy." "Yeah, this is new." "No, you obviously opened a 'new' package, stripped its contents and stuffed it in your drawer there. I want a new copy. One in factory cellophane, not your back room shrink wrap machine, not something you've pawed at and left in a drawer." "Well it's this or nothing." "Right. I'll order it online then." Turned around and walked out without making a purchase.

Fuck Gamestop. There's no reason to do that shit. They just do it because "fuck you." So no, fuck them. People who shop there are fucking morons enabling that horseshit with every purchase, and deserve all the suffering they get for it.

Entirely different issue all together but that's because Joe Average's IQ keeps dipping as the years go on, and thanks to Microsoft trying to make their OS more automated, it makes everything easier for them because doing even slight critical thinking and effort makes them squeeze their pee-pee because it's so hard.

"Oh what's that Windows? You have all the drivers ready for me, I didn't even have to do anything? Gee thanks, you're the best!!"

"WHAT!?!? I have to MANUALLY install drivers on Linux? WTF this is [current year], I shouldn't have to put up with this bullshit!!"

It's one thing if you're like /v/ whom held onto Win7 for the longest time until Steam went "fuck you" to them, because at that point a lot of them went to Linux. One could make an argument that Win7 was the last good Windows (which people often do say to this day). It's another thing entirely when you have battered-wife syndrome so badly that the beatings have made you "wearing a bicycle helmet" levels of retarded.

Remember, computers used to be a thinking man's domain, so from like 95 to XP you pretty much had to learn the ins and outs of your machine including using the correct installation driver discs that matched the hardware that was in your tower. You try telling someone in this day and age to do that and they'll go hide in the corner crying to themselves in fear.

Literally no one likes you, go away.
I didn't say anything wrong. Feel free to take your womanly, soy-bitched coomer crying over to the Synthetic Man thread, where you belong. Gooners always were, and always will be the absolute dumbest, most useless gaming demographic, thanks for proving me right on that once again.
I think it might be related the PS5 Jailbreaking scene going into overdrive lately. A jailbroken PS5/Pro becomes a very competent platform for emulation and also PC games can run in a Linux environment. For this to work it requires an older firmware, new models won't work (so far) so it is not surprising that older models might be going for a higher price due to this potential versatility. At least that is what I can only deduce of such a strange price structure.

Apparently Sony is making the latest firmware a mandatory update to be able to play GTA VI so that's the rub.
This might actually give PS5 one singular reason for it's existence, as an emulation machine that has AstroBot as a tech demo on the side. Still not wasting over a thousand dollars on it, but I might consider a jailbroken one a luxury purpose sometime in the future(assuming there are going to be luxuries going forward in the enshittified, post economic collapse clown world we're heading into).
It is no rumor, press outlets have already confirmed the game will be 30 FPS only, even on Pro.

Article

TL;DR - There will be no "Performance Mode", the game is locked at 30 at launch. The Head of Development at R* said it would consult with the tech department as to whether an update down the line would make 60 FPS possible ( I think this is pure PR BS not to discourage sales, the game would have to receive severe graphical and resolution cutbacks to achieve a consistent high framerate on consoles ).

60 FPS is going to be a PC and the most likely PS6/Helix port feature.
GTA 6 really is just a gayer GTA 5, huh? They did the exact same thing with Xbox 360 and PS3 back then, only to "fix" the game for PC and next gen consoles so they could get their dumbass fans to pay twice for the game.

Corporations are reaching levels of scummy that this premise is entirely feasible.
Rockstar wanted to sell the game for £99, there was backlash from the customer, so they decided to sell the game for £79, with features cut from the game, that are available in the £99 edition. Funny how that happens.

I have no doubt that they will limit the FPS to 30 fps, to save some bells and whistles for the next, 'enhanced/4k/remastered/GOTY' edition.

I'm honestly surprised it's as high as 3% now, which does mean there's been progress on that front. If you go to archive.org and check out numbers from 2020(0.90%) 2015(0.87%) 2010(0.22%) I'd say 3.05 is honestly a huge improvement. It's more than doubled since it was 1.39% just in 2023.

Those numbers do not add up to 95.03%, which implies that 0.08% of Steam users are still using Windows 7. It's also surprising that MacOS is almost at 2%, although I guess it shouldn't be since apparently most new games have native Mac versions and its Windows compatibility is almost as good as Linux.

Aren't you the one with sour grapes about games requiring DX12 GPUs simply because you can't afford a 2 series used GPU?

I refuse to accept that there would be people desperate enough for Gta6 to buy a 1.4k ps5. Its crazy to think that this generation of console has gotten more expensive as time goes by when it should be the opposite.

The Switch 2 is an absolute steal in comparison, even after its price increase. What even exists as a budget game system for kids/families anymore? Evercade with its overpriced cartridges? A mini PC that takes work to actually set up and maintain, and might be expensive anyway? A chink handheld that requires some level of tech savviness and tolerance of chinesium to even use?

Unironically these are becoming the best value propositions for people looking for versatile and convenient methods to play all manner of games. Android handhelds have come a long way and are being manufactured with high quality standard and features: 120Hz AMOLED screens, Hall Effect joysticks and triggers and SnapDragon 8 processors. These come in all shapes, sizes and budgets so there is something to cater to every need. Some of the most reliable are from Retroid and Ayn. These already come loaded with emulators are set up to be ready to use but indeed to get the most out of these devises you need to have a certain level of know-how to tinker with setting and file installations, which it is not a bad thing because it opens up a whole lot more functionality for these devises.

These are some examples:

Retroid Pocket 6

Ayn Odin 3

Retroid Pocket Duo

Ayn Thor

There are countless Youtube tutorials and guides as to how to get these devises to perform their best and tons of community support. One of the best developments so far is how PC gaming in now possible on these handhelds, the development of applications and tools to make this possible is advancing at a breakneck pace. The latest is a native android application called "Droid Deck" that allows these devises play your Steam PC library like if it were a mini Steam Deck. It is still early in development but it already shows what is possible.

While these devices don't reach the level of power of a dedicated x86-64 handheld PC or a Switch 2, the freedom to do with these as you please more than make up for it. Also by being ARM devices their battery life is excellent and so are their sleep and wake up function.

There are also even decent cheap alternatives which it is far less of a compromise if the goal is to hand one of these devices to a small kid without worrying too much about the possible lost or damage of an expensive piece of hardware.

Anbernic's line of products offers various handhelds for less than $100:

Anbernic Handhelds

Introducing your kids to retro emulation is not the worst things you could do considering how exploitative and expensive gaming is becoming.

@Belvedere I know all that, and I have a Thor myself (good shit, but the Retroid Pocket Duo and newly-announced Anbernic RG DDS (yes, Anbernic pulled an Anbernic and announced a successor to the RG DS Plus mere weeks after its release) may surpass it thanks to the better second screen resolution and built-in stylus).

But the idea of giving my young child a device with chinese shit on the box, engrish in the stock OS, initial setup being a chore, having to deal with emulator settings, playing russian roulette with the build quality, etc. just feels wrong to me. Sure, I know how to do all those things just fine. But I don’t want to push it onto someone as their first gaming experience, especially a child, and I’m not exactly eager to tell a kid to roam the internet and learn how to handle roms themselves with today’s Internet culture. The tech-illiterate-dumbfuck “turn the thing on and play a game” option needs to exist. Unironically, think about the children!

On the other hand, maybe it should be the parent’s responsibility to set up the handheld and curate it to a point where it has games and shouldn’t have to be altered any further, like a custom NES Classic, and the parent can discreetly add more games to it over time? I don’t know.
