I did the math a while back, but after the feature it's hard to find, so I'll sum it up from memory again. 6 million is not break even for wolverine. 6 million is "if it sells any less than this, disney can yank the marvel license from us".
At absolute BEST comditions and scenarios, i.e., every single copy sold digitally and for full price, no bundles whatsoever, at the lowest rate that disney's cut is allowed to be, did not spend a single DOLLAR over budget despite being internally delayed a year, and a very small marketing budget for a AAA release, you're looking at about 8 million break even. However, if even a single one of those factors is higher than the perfect conditions I laid out, especially bundles, and that math shoots up by millions. 1 million ps5s sold bundled with wolverine, and all the sudden, you're looking at a 10-11 million break even.
And they do not want it to merely break even. No company spends hundreds of millions looking for zero losses, but zero profits too.
