I understand that the playerbase may be dropping faster than people can count, but we don't need to attribute an extra 25% of their player count to them.

My theory is that when a studio gets to big, they start to become a target for lawsuits by these woke malicious people in the industry for not being DEI enough. When you are a small indie company you will fly under the radar because the cost/payout from suing is not worth it, but big companies are more a easy profitable target for a lawsuit. Where they can claim racism/discrimination within the companys hiring practices.

We know the sweet baby inc CEO literally said she likes to have lunch with company leads, and scare them with threats of what can happen to that company, if they are found to not be DEI enough.

So, when a company gets big, they start hiring DEI consultants to have some sort of defense against potential lawsuits. I think it's most likely what is happening here.

Astrobot, for all its mediocrity when it comes to gameplay, is incredibly well optimized, and could likely very easily run on the ps4, considering it's literally running on the same engine that the ps4 vr tech demo that featured the astrobots also ran on.

GTA Online pretty much did it on name recognition and timing alone. GTA Online was a fucking DISASTER for the first two years.

Fortnite basically got big because the Epic money machine was able to grab celebrity endorsements and took the wind right out from PUBG when it came to battle royale.

And Warzone took off because it released right when the lockdowns took effect.

Once somone is invested, they're not going to leave unless you're really breaking the mold at the right time. Nobody is leaving their 5-10-13 year old accounts for fucking Horizon co op.

At least they backed down eventually. People have been bitching about Xbox forcing their account bullshit on Steam for eons, but Xbox has been doing a stellar job at ignoring their playerbase.

PlayStation is in a weird state overall because they're not completely braindead, like Xbox's leadership, and yet, they make some embarrassingly bad decisions. Nevertheless, we've yet to see a half decent State of Play, so I'm 99% certain they're fucking dead and never coming back.

The mere PROCESS of fixing them is a 7-8 year endeavor at least when you account for how deep in the pipeline things are and how many yes-men and stooges to the current regime in positions of power at the company would need to be ousted before any real change could happen. And all that still requires someone at the helm WILLING to try and fix things and shareholders willing to let him stay in power despite things inevitably getting worse before they get better.

Nag some third parties to make exclusive sequels to smaller IPs. Prioritize short dev time and small scale, even if the games have to be cheaper.

Look for any iconic 90s/2000s exclusives that Sony still has the source code for, then hire autistic indies to enhance them to use a fraction of the PS5’s capabilities, cranked up to 4K 120FPS. Use AI to quickly adapt the source code to run natively on a PS5, then add QoL improvements and fan-desired gameplay additions in ways that can only be achieved with that original source. Ride the current high of a new recomp being released every week by showing what a large company’s resources can do for it.

Make a new Ape Escape and Twisted Metal. Why? Because fuck you, I want them.

Times have changed since 2012 - the platform fighter is a more common genre, the original PSAS is old enough to be nostalgic, and it’s been an unusually long time since Nintendo made another Smash Bros. and its future is uncertain. It would also be a good way to make people associate the current generation of astroturfed IPs with the ones that old fans actually like. And if they’re really desperate for a live service cash cow, they can use this game. Sure, it didn’t really work for MultiVersus, but other games have pulled it off.

All of this can be done while Sony is busy throwing live service shit at the wall and hoping something sticks. If they need to free up money, they can cancel one of the AAAA live service games they currently have in development (the horror!) to fund several of these low-budget games.
