I believe it, considering that GTA6's budget already went over a billion, and SIE probably would want some similarly budgeted single player games to try to get the same "ultra-blockbuster" feel for consumers, execpt the best they got was Wolverine and Cuckman's biggest money pit yet.

Current  LOW estimates for gta6's budget are over $2 billion. As far as the wider industry is concerned, it's fucked if gta6 flops, it's fucked if gta6 succeeds, because the only lesson that will be learned by the western AAA industry in the event of it succeeding will be "oh, we need to cancel 80% of our games and pump all their budgets into one big game that takes us a decade!"

There are some based Indie developers out there that understand the assigment:
I'm inherently distrustful of shit like this after Hatred and DoA Beach Volleyball exploited anti-woke sentiment to shill their mid-to-shitty games. Buy a game because you want to play it, not because the dev claims to support your politics.
But it DID get worse.

For context, Uncharted and the Last of Us have collectively sold an estimated 90 million copies over the course of 20 years. TLOU is estimated to have generated a billion in revenue, and if we give the most charitable estimate that every copy of every Uncharted game sold for full RRP that's 50M x 60 = $3 billion for a combined total revenue of $4-billion.

This means lesbian Cowboy Bebop will have to sell about 20-25 million copies just to break even. The current highest-selling PS5 game is Spider-Man 2, at 17 million copies, and that presumably includes sales from pack-in bundles.

TL;DR This needs to be the best-selling PS5 game of all time just to break even, and probably needs to sell double the current record to actually be profitable.
I hate to defend Druckman but this is mostly Sony's fault. If you saw the gigaflop that was TLOU2 and then decided it was a good idea to pump over half a billion into another ugly lesbian flop you must be pretty close to brain dead.
Don't forget to factor in however many hundreds of millions were wasted on the Naughty Dog live service game that ultimately went nowhere because it took ND years of development to realize they don't know shit about fuck when it comes to building and maintaining a live service.

Nah. Rockstar made an absolute fuckload of money due to retards buying shark cards on console to get in-game cash, and then raked in even more money with the damned GTA+ subscription(which we already know they're including for gta6).

Recurrent customer spending is MTX and subscriptions, which for Take2 are primarily NBA2k, Zynga(mobile games) and GTA5. So for FY25 and 26, damn near 80% of their 5.6 and 6.6 billion in revenue comes from MTX and subscriptions.

So according to Take2 themselves, GTA5 has sold 60 million more copies than the NBA2k franchise for fucks sake. More than double Borderlands, and damn near triple Civilization, and that's just one game. And even before buying Zynga, and adding the GTA+ subscription, they were still taking in over 2 billion a year between NBA2k and GTA5 which was 9 years old at the time. And which platforms does most of that money come from?

Unless GTA6 is massively shit, they'll be basically guaranteed to make their money back because the console players can't stop with the MTX and Take2 will happily accept 1 billion a year in recurring revenue for little development cost for the next decade throwing in some clothes and cars.

Sony set its sights on building a character empire to rival Hello Kitty, and its first contender turned out to be a bear who could not sleep.

In the gaming space, Sony watched from the sidelines for decades, cycling through Crash Bandicoot, Sackboy, and Astro Bot without ever landing a keeper. Now it is finally ready to manufacture its own icon.

This is just hilarious, at least people could associate with Astro Bot as an mascot since he have a game. Replacing Astro Bot with a adult care bear with sleep problems, are just retarded :story:

the funny and sad part is that astrobot literally behaves like sackboy, they had the golden goose with them all this time but decided to neglect it due to sheer retardation i wager.

Rockstar's games are multiplatform and GTA Online and its MTX is their main moneyspinner.

There's been no indication I can find that Interplanetary or whatever it's called is going to be anything other than the bog-standard single player action adventure shit ND is known for --if anything, the fact Cuckmann admitted they don't know how to make a live service game only further confirms this-- so there's no real avenue to monetize it beyond initial sale the way Rockstar do.

Add to that it's a brand new IP instead of the most recognized game franchise of all time and Naughty Dog have a severe uphill battle to make money off this, assuming the $600-million budget rumour is true.

Sony is still trying to chase the mascot trend of the fucking 90's?

Give it up. You're not Nintendo.
Sony have had some success with mascots, that they squander every time, because they terminally mismanage every franchise they own and create.

Looks like a telegram sticker pack. Will be a complete failure.

I'll start buy saying I think Intergalactic will be a good to great game as Naughty dog games are always high quality games and pushing the envelope. But I think you guys are more right than wrong that Intergalactic success is far from assured. Its launching into a very different environment than 7 years ago when the TLOU2 released and went on to sell 10+ million copies. Even the very fact that Naughty Dog have not released an original game in the past seven years is not a good sign. In 2020 fortnite had been out for a couple years and studios were just starting to clue into the Live service gold rush. Fast forward to today and you see that most of the big games being played on playstation are the same 4-5 live service games. Then you have the online controversy surrounding the game which I don't necessarily agree with. I think its silly that there are whole youtube channels built around hating the game, but I cant deny that they exist.

Overall if this game comes out and worst case scenario is a break even or even just a marginal profit I think it will be another reason sony asks themselves if their cinematic AAA style is sustainable.

You watch your fucking whore mouth about DoA Xtreme beach volleyball. That game came out in 2003, way before woke was even an idea.
That fucking game was awesome and in this house, every dead or alive game is a hero! END OF STORY!

except dead or alive 6 because the gameplay was garbage.

Please God let the budget on this game break a billion, I want to see just how much money Playstation can burn before the rest of Sony goes "what the fuck we can't paper over that bombing"
I wonder if marketing was factored into that budget? I haven't heard a peep from this, past the trailer.

TLOU2 had exception luck coming out during the pandemic and having the previous games legacy as free marketing. The common consensus in retrospective, is that the sequel was mediocre. Neil does not have that level of luck to help him again.

Well I think it was also a sequel to a beloved game too. Intergalactic is a new IP. A sizable portion of gamers seem to have an issue with the protag. So yeah I am not sure about it. The game would probably lose money if it sells the 10 million of last of us 2 (assuming the 600 million figure is correct).

We really need to see gameplay asap I think.

Also, since Druckmann has flaunted how he's Israeli, and even shoehorning a Holocaust memorial into TLOU2, people that are sick of those or sympathize with Palestine may also not play Intergalactic. Also, the Grounded documentary for TLOU2 mentioned how ND has to learn from the use of crunch during its development, and yet the same story happened Intergalactic's development, may also keep some people away too.
