My Walkman from the late 80’s still works like a charm. But I can see the impracticality of cds over cassettes with the discman, considering increased battery requirements, and how delicate they would beI cannot speak for walkmans but discmans sucked; they were bulky, would skip really often, most couldn't play CD-R's and were similar to Google glass, where using them in public was a clear "come mug me" sign.
None of my classmates ever brought their discmans to school because of how inconvenient they were.
off topic, but every Sony home stereo piece (vhs player and laserdisc player) and camera (vhs camcorder and digital camera) still works like a charm, and the only things needing to be replaced are batteries and rubber belts. Their shit is built to last, or at least was.
