With the release of the Sega Saturn, sonic has been making a struggle in making the jump into the third dimension, and we were given this game.

I present to you... a really bad sonic game.

Sonic 3D Blast is considered by most critics and fans to be one of the worst sonic games ever.

This game was developed by Sega and Traveler’s Tales for the Sega Genesis and later, the Sega Saturn, to make up for the cancellation of Sonic X-Treme

And Yes. Traveler’s Tales. The game company that is famous for making the Lego games we know today. And this wasn’t the only sonic game they made for the Saturn (thread link https://kiwifarms.net/threads/sonic-r.35519/)

Anyways. The game is bad. It had poor controls with an isometric viewpoint with a fetch quest to rescue flickies and getting them into the rings to continue on.

If you plan to try this game out. I recommend the Saturn version. It’s not good, but critics say the Saturn version is much more better than the genesis version because the graphics are more better, the weather effects look good, the music is great, and the special stages are a lot more better than the ones in the genesis version.

Sega Genesis special stages

Plus, the Saturn version can save your game while the genesis version cannot.

Oh yea. Like sonic CD, this game has two separate soundtracks. One for the genesis and one for the saturn

And the opening cutscenes are different

Story: Dr. Robotnik discovers the chaos emeralds on an island but can’t seem to find them. But he notices the island is inhabited by Birds called flickers. Robotnik plans to use the power they have to find the chaos emeralds. He starts putting them in his robots as living batteries to power them.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles find out about this and go to the island to rescue the flickies, find the chaos emeralds, and defeat Robotnik.

The sad things about this game is that it was the closest we got to an official sonic release on the Sega Saturn.

You can find the Genesis version on Sonic Mega Collection

You’ll also find the genesis version on steam for $5 (they should have added the Saturn version instead): http://store.steampowered.com/app/34278/Sonic_3D_Blast/

I was a Genesis kid, and I still remember the dawning realization that the Sonic game I had saved up my allowances for was not going to bring me hours of fun like the other Sonic games I had played. Seriously, fuck this game.

I played this at a friend's house for free when it came out because he had Sega Channel. It was the slowest Sonic video game ever. The levels felt like the outside of an office complex or an outdoor shopping mall. The graphics looked like an attempt to mimic Donkey Kong Country, but somehow not as cool. Chris Chan had a poster of this game on his wall for years.

Sonic Labyrinth is more sluggish than 3d blast.

I Present to you another bad sonic game.

Sonic R for the Sega Saturn

Sonic-R-J-Front.jpg

Sonic R was released to the Sega Saturn by Sega and Traveler's Tales.

Traveler's Tales is famous for making the lego games we know today. this was the second sonic game they made for the Sega Saturn. the first was Sonic 3D Blast. Thread link right here

Sonic R is considered by fans to be one of the worst sonic games made. and its also considered to be one of the worst racing games ever made.

the controls are balls and its very difficult turning.

the music is nice but it seems really out of place.

here's the ost:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9F64DA808270DC84

but the only song that's actually great from this game is Super Sonic Racing

Playable Characters
Sonic
Super Sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Amy
Dr. Robotnik
Metal Sonic
Egg Robo from Sonic 3 and Knuckles

the game introduced two new characters

The Tails Doll. a doll made by robotnik and literally the worst racer in the game. he later then evolved into a creepypasta and meme on the internet.

and Metal Knuckles. a robot doppleganger of knuckles created by robotnik.

Also. one thing about this game. you can beat this game 100% complete in less than an hour. I've been seeing people on youtube doing speedruns on this game.

heres jontron's video of this game.

you can find this game on sonic gems collection.

The whole game makes perfect sense if you assume it’s like Conker’s Bad Fur Day and they’re all just hungover and lost.

I never understood the music in this game. Those fucking songs sound less like a Sonic game and more like the kind of garbage that gets played at night in the crappy resorts your grand-parents go to because they can't afford anything better.

You son of a..... "Can You Feel the Sunshine?" and "Super Sonic Racing" are national treasures of music and I will NOT tolerate such disrespect towards them... Even if this fucking game they're in sucks ass!

Sonic R was a bad game becuase it had horrible controls, but in retrospect it was pretty good for soundtrack and idea. You had weather mechanics that changed constantly including winter, rain, summer, night, day, sunset? The list can really go on how much variety for the game's stages. The music was also not so bad, it was made by a british singer called TJ Davis and Richard Jaques, and I heard Jaques previous work in other SEGA games and he's not so bad than what everyone believes. But the game is bland, horrible direction, and just horrible controls.

Just like usual, SEGA makes terrible sonic games but great sonic music.

my theory on Sega is that they probably invest their money mostly into the music than the actual games themselves. same goes for Sonic 06

better movement
less frustrating gameplay
the ability to become super sonic
level editor

this has me interested.

I never had any major trouble with this game as a kid. The frustration and legacy this game acquired over the years has always baffled me. I guess the weird isometric platforming didn't really resonate with people. it's either that, or the people that got upset over sonic having green eyes, or being 3d in general had some influence in the public opinion.

Who knows, maybe me and my friends were the only kids who knew how to play this fucking game.

This channel has a lot of interesting content surrounding Sonic 3D's development and how they achieved things like having that FMV that plays before the title screen and such. Traveller's Tales may have made a few dubious games for the Sega Genesis but their programming skills were absolutely up to par.

Track design looks pretty interesting, even through every course is broken. What's with the missing textures on the floor, though? Is that an emulation glitch or was the original that buggy?

From own memory on the game for PC back when I was a kid, it's a game glitch and also bad texture entirely.
