just recently finished up my playthrough of Sonic Origins in it's entirety. Did all mainline games and all achievements, but didn't 100%.
DAMMIT, YOU BEAT ME TO IT. I was actually planning on playing through all 4 (through the decompilations + AIR) and giving my thoughts on each one, since it has been a while since I've played through all 4. Well, no time like the present, so let's go. Doing 1 at a time here. Also doing them chronologically as SEGA intended with Origins.

I agree that it has aged better than a lot of people give it credit for.....but it's still Sonic 1. You can almost see the pieces fitting together, but they're not quite there yet. Green Hill, Spring Yard, and Star Light are the perfect mixture of speedy platforming and exploration. Marble and Scrap Brain (Acts 1 and 2 ) place a bit too much emphasis on slow methodical platforming. Labyrinth Zone - whoever designed it and whoever made the decision to make Scrap Brain Act 3 Labyrinth Act 4 can go to troon nigger hell. But overall, a solid foundation to build off of. Next up is CD

@FunkTism Thanks for your response regarding the characters, was insightful and I want to somewhat comment on some others you posted:

Amy was at her best in SA1 and SA2 and while Heroes and her Yandere phase is not perfect it is FAR FAR FAR better than everything we got currently.

I didn't realize how seemingly a lot of ‘nu-fans’ try to sand Amy down besides Flynn but while I detest these "Amy is totally like me!" people I do get your concerns regarding how she might potentially damage the brand in the upcoming Sonic 4 movie for example.

I get that Amy in terms of characterization and especially skills has little going for her other than being a generally nice girl/infatuated with Sonic and bashing shit in with her hammer but I guess (from my perspective at least) her appeal is just being a ordinairy character compared to the others with more outlandish natural abilities as it’s reflected with her gimped appearances in stuff like R, SA1 and Advance 1.

She still sticks around in spite of her artificial shortcomings at this point because of her legacy status and I still like Amy as a character, even if just being 'the girl' because she's a friend to a large majority of the crew.

  • Sonic Origins +
  • Sonic Superstars
    • Both games HEAVILY marketed towards those fans. Making Amy's playability or her in the story the MAIN Marketing or focal point. In Both cases the game flopped spectacularly, while the """"fans"""" that clammored for her were nowhere to be seen in the game's sales.

I can’t say much for Superstars since that game did feel underwhelming and the boss fights dragged on forever, but wasn’t Origins Plus also a case of typically overpriced ‘upgrades’ that barely add anything new to a bugged compilation of old games that fans wouldn’t take the bait despite SEGA delisting most other means of playing those old games?

Horrible take and let me explain why, (and I'll try to do it nicely). Even though it seems like an intentional downplay of Super Forms.

Super forms have always been story-relevant since their introduction in Sonic 2.
The only time they are not relevant is when it was DLC in Forces or an extra character in a spin-off game (like racing games).

So please do not downplay the importance of a superform.

The Super form also ruins Amy's inclusion in games going forward if they have the Chaos Emeralds.

Sure Super forms are story-relevant, but it was introduced in Sonic 2 as an actual gameplay-tied reward for bothering to collecting all the Chaos Emeralds rather than just giving you an slightly better ending. (Tails and Knuckles didn't get any extra true final boss sequence in 3, only Sonic got Doomsday Zone) The super forms being more explicitly story-relevant in my opinion came about during the 3D-era with SA1 where the Chaos Emeralds were more or less tied to the plot though games like the Advance trilogy and Heroes would reintroduce the special stage-requirements but still lock super forms mostly to the true finale.

I can get what @Cave Fisher meant with Amy's super form not being relevant ever since Superstars still only had the actual final fight exclusive to Super Sonic and Origins Plus' inclusion of Amy and her super forms is about as minimal as it gets with the only from my knowledge funny thing being that her Hyper form can spam hammer throws.

Plus the series hasn't been shy about giving characters a super form once and either never showing it again or nerfing it. Tails and Knuckles after 3&K, Blaze never went Burning again after the Rush games, Silver in 06, etc. Hell, even that Sonic robot from 3&K can turn super briefly from the Master Emerald during it's final fight against Knuckles so I bet the devs were being silly with it. (And no, I'm not counting in stuff like Super Neo Metal Sonic from the comics since I stick only to the games)

Point is, while yeah super forms are a big deal usually, the only characters at this point who still do so for plot finale reasons these days are Sonic and Shadow when he gets lucky enough to star.

SEGA, I LOVE TRIP'S DESIGN!!! REUSE HER IN A NEW GAME AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!!!

I liked Trip's design a lot as well, it's rare to see other reptilian designs besides Vector and Espio's, plus her Super form was different visually as well.

You got my vote as well for her return in another game. But knowing SEGA, unlikely.

Also in case you want someone else's cents on 06, I was around during the hype of 06, it's release and aftermath but played it in early 2010's at a friend's place. The game is tolerable at first, load times notwithstanding but the cheap deaths and long shit sections like Silver's ball segments in Dusty Desert and a lot of the boss fights in general just wear down on you eventually and I presume people who want to stick their heads in the sand and either 'don't find it that bad' or desperately want this game to be fixed are still clinging for this to be their SA3, for better or worse.

Oh I'm definitely looking forward to more of this!

I personally still like to play Sonic 1 a lot and in some strange way it's my go-to game whenever I want a quick fix of 2D Sonic. Yeah some parts are clunky and Labyrinth Zone's slow-mo is shit, but it's simple presentation hooks me in. No half-pipe special stages with the pop-in framerate when the pipe moves like in Sonic 2 (pre-Mobile version) or the long idle sections like 3&K has.

And in all fairness there is a shortcut for Scrap Brain Act 3 that skips almost the entire slugfest, but I get your grievances.

Can't wait for your thoughts on CD.

((BTW, nice coverage post of the classics as well, @Plumber's Crack , you got me eager to replay Sonic 2 again soon.))

Amy, at least going by the comics, is the physically strongest character, in terms of pure raw power, of the good guys, she isn't really normal, and in battle can barely contain her bloodlust

Basically a slightly better version of Sonic 1, with one pretty massive flaw: Going for the generators has to be the most frustrating experience in a 2D Sonic game not named Sonic 4 or Sonic Superstars. First you have to find a Past sign, which OF COURSE, aren't as plentiful as the Future signs (Wacky Workbench 1 has exactly ONE Past sign, for example). Then you have to buildup enough speed and stay at that speed in order to get there, which at times, can be pretty fucking difficult. THEN you have to find the fucking robot generator, which can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack (Wacky Workbench Act 1 once again being the most egregious example - iykyk). Long story short, if you want to get the good ending for this game, and still have all of the hair on your head, just get to the Special Stages and go for the Time Stones. Also most of the bosses are pretty....ehhhhhh. The positives: the game is beautiful, and the OST - specifically the EU/JPN soundtrack - I'd argue is the second-best of the entire series. US still has some banger tunes though, specifically the Special Stage, Tidal Tempest Present, and Stardust Speedway Bad Future. Sonic Boom is iconic too ofc. Onto Sonic 2.

FWIW I used some action replay codes in retroarch to bypass/make less demanding the time travel stuff and played it like a typical 2d sonic game. was quite enjoyable.

Marble and Scrap Brain honestly aren't bad zones... on later playthroughs when you have more knowledge of the levels. Marble at the very least could have been slightly more liked if it didn't come right after Green Hill. As for Scrap Brain, i can see what they were going for with having the third act be labyrinth 2.0 since each act is supposed to be Sonic going deeper into the factory, but that still doesn't stop me and plenty of others from taking the shortcut at the beginning just to get that shit out of the way. Cool idea, but lame reuse of assets.

Also most of the bosses are pretty....ehhhhhh
Robotnik on a treadmill's pretty funny. I always found it weird how abrubtly the game ended as a kid with a really normal stage end boss and nothing else, but then later found out there was apparently a scrapped final stage that involved using the time travel gimmicks to hurt the final boss.

Long story short, if you want to get the good ending for this game, and still have all of the hair on your head, just get to the Special Stages and go for the Time Stones.
I actually find it easier to go for the Robot Generators than going for the Special Stages. It helps that there's usually some kind of "Time Machine" in nearly every level. However, the HD Remake fucked with the physics of the game which actually screws up a few of these (Notably the ones of Quartz Quadrant) and overall makes trying to time travel via running much more difficult that it was originally.

Isn't shadow the bad guy? Does that mean Sonic supports ICE?
Shadow's more "the guy that was the result of a fed funded experiment that watched his family and friends get killed and imprisoned for life by the feds and then stuck in cryosleep for 50 years by the feds with all evidence of his existence being wiped"

of course... it was the GUN. (sonic CIA)
...Sonic does say a line about running down black creatures with a car at one point in shadow the hedgehog though.

EDIT: FOUND THE CLIP LMAO
