When did Mario ever have these things? I would sincerely like to know. Even in Super Mario RPG he was a heroic mime, with all the other characters doing the personality stuff.
I'm going to assume he means from the cartoons, because those are the only times Mario ever showed any form of personality.

Speaking of which, the Mario 3 cartoons are fucking GARBAGE. I recently ripped the complete series DVD, and my god... it doesn't come close to holding a candle to Super Show or World.

Here are some examples of when Nintendo experimented with giving Mario characters more robust and fully formed personalities and these are JUST GAMES examples.

So we cannot argue that it is out of Nintendo's control to do these things. Some of them you'll notice were more successful than others:
  • Luigi's Mansionseries
    • (Giving Luigi something that de-clonifies him, major personality, characters with dialogue and a story that is not a repeated generic Peach is captured plot).
  • Wario Ware,
    • (building friend groups, characters with dialogue and personalities in cutscenes, not every character is a WAHOO spouting mascot, etc...)
  • Wario games
  • Mario Sunshine,
    • A failure imo with long drawn out cutscences with no camera work to make it interesting visually.
    • Although this game gives BOWSER MAJOR changes with the introduction of Bowser Jr., voice acting beyond grunts, less monster / more human personality,
      • Started the whole (Bowser is a good dad personality, that Nintendo uses to this day for their child safety feature videos, example below).
  • Paper Mario
  • Mario RPG
  • Mario & Luigi RPGS being able to say sassy/snarky/mean things as Mario is something that is not allowed with now in most Mario RPGs and games his Partner character does all the talking for him and he is blank.
  • Mario Odyssey, (You may not like it) but the ending of with his cucking from Peach and his insistence on dating her in a reflection of Bowser's own habits.
  • Mario Strikers, (With his emotional range going beyond happy Wahoo!)
  • And many many more.
Mario games use to want to flesh out their characters beyond being Brand Mascots and experimented with grander stories and plots.

It's too bad we'll never see a lot of the episodes as broadcast due to copyright. I still have a strong childhood memory of the pirate episode with "Limbo Rock" by Chubby Checker.

What was (For people who have played them), favorite zone in Sonic Mania and favorite stage in Shadow Generations? I would say Lava Reef is the best in Mania and Sunset Heights or Kingdom Valley are the best in Shadow Gens.
Kind of random to ask for just those two specific games in particular. For Mania I guess I'll say Mirage Saloon if you're playing as Knuckles and Studiopolis for everyone else. Press Garden was also pretty neat though. All the levels in Shadow Generations are pretty high quality so it's hard to pick out one in particular. Radical Highway, I guess.

The thing is, the songs used in Super Show weren't even the original versions, they were basically Karaoke versions with different singers. In the first volume DVD set, there's an episode (Jungle Fever) that still has the original song in it (Jungle Love) and its so obvious it's not the same version as Morris Day's. Even as a kid I knew these were bootleg version because the song "Bad" in "King Mario of Cramalot" is NOT MJ's.
 
The fact most of those examples are spin-off games (with mario odyssey and sunshine being an exception since that is mainline) kinda only accentuates the problem, as well... even before the great New Super Mario Bros. takeover, a lot of the mainline games hardly gave Mario or even the extended cast much of a characterization besides the bare minimum that didn't come from a manual or some other form of external material (if they didn't drop it in the very next game).

The fact they actually "tried" or lazily tried likely stems from the fact that they kinda had to for shit like RPGs where deeper stories and characters are to be expected and the lack of which being more aparent and more so for the sports games to make them less like different models with unique stats.

Hell, if you compared Mario in say... Mario Sunshine or 64 to a different game characters you could consider competition in terms of personality like Rayman or Crash Bandicoot in just thier first few proper entries alone, the difference is night and day given the latter two were made by people who cared about making characters.

If you wanted a thread-relevant example, just look at how Sonic had consistently better personality showings before 06 happened than every mainline Mario game up to that point.

I dont know man, at the end of the Mario Movie I just sorta felt like I watched a bunch of pretty images and thought "wow Yoshi is in it now cool" at the sequel hook at the end.
Nothing that happened in it made me really care to see what happens next. As an adaptation it really wasn't that good, just sorta following the formula of go to recognizable thing, hear orchestral recognizable track, characters comment on it, repeat. Character wise, I don't think the Mario characters acted anything like I expected them to. Peach was a different character, Donkey Kong was a different character. Luigi was just sorta offscreen most of the movie, Mario just didn't feel like Mario to me, and Bowser felt like Jack Black being Jack Black. Of all the characters really it was only Cranky Kong who felt the same to me, but then still the entire dynamic of how he interacts with DK changed, being some tribe leader rather than an angry old man sitting outside of a cabin.

Point is nothing about the Mario Movie made me really interested to see the next one, and I don't really plan to unless I watch it for free years later. I saw its going to be based on Galaxy and I bet Rosalina is another generic girlboss like Peach was in the Mario movie.

On the flip side, Sonic movie is a lot more complicated. It has a lot of faults, and the first one is quite literally the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" formula, but then also being sent to the human world and interacting with humans is a fairly normal occurrence for the series. Sonic was aged down for the movie but it still felt like he was building to be the character that people know him for, all of the character dynamics are the same. (Tails is the little brother nerd, Knuckles is the Rival/Older Brother ect). They were clearly building up to what they wanted to do for the sequel, and I was interested enough to go see it, and that sequel made me interested enough to see the next one and so on. Across all 3 films, the references are a lot less in your face and generally way more tastefully done, very subtle things like having the Biolizard from SA2 be a horror monster in a movie Shadow and Maria watched, or Robotnik's ringtone being a snipit of the Eggman theme. I prefer it done this way. Things you gotta look for in the movie rather it than being the point of the movie.

Meanwhile the Mario movie will dedicate about 30 minutes across two different scenes to glaze up Mario Kart, and that doesn't even really have anything to do with the story being told.
I'll give you that Mario made more money in theaters than all 3 Sonic movies combined I believe, but if Sales = Quality, we'd all be diehard Disney fans and the Star Wars Sequels would be the best cinema ever produced.

What are your Top 3 Sonic games, that NEED a good Decomp?​

Similar to Sonic Unleashed decomp, LOZ OoT and MM, Mario 64 decomps, etc...
What Sonic games, (At most 3 since we could really say all of them) in your opinion need a good decomp.

Some common reasons to get your brain going on this topic are:
  • Making the game easier to access and play on all different/modern hardware
  • Providing needed fixes, patches, stability, etc...
  • By going Open Source allowing the Sonic Modding community to run rampant with additional content, gameplay revisions, features, etc...
  • Enabling Online Multiplayer.
  • Enabling features, mechanics, etc... to start getting ported to other games, (Like Mario 64 in Half Life, Minecraft, etc...)

My Top 3 are:​

  1. Sonic Battle​

      • Online Battles, (1v1, 2v2, and more)
      • New Characters, with the insane amount of Fan-Sprites made over the years based on Battle this would work. (Shadic, Nazo, Blaze, Eggman, fun fan shit etc...)
      • New levels with unrestricted camera.
      • HD resolutions, HQ Song remasters,
      • New Game Modes, (Survival, Rogue-like survival like Garou, Level creator, Sprite/Color editor, Tournament mode, etc...)
      [*]
  2. Sonic and the Black Knight / Secret Rings, (Same engine / built on top of each other like OOT and MM I consider a packaged deal here)​

      • Some of the most underrated experiences stuck on the Wii with some of the best charactization, music, creative level design, and peak Sonic characterization. That with a few touch-ups, could be classic experiences.
      • Wide-screen and Ultra wide screen, Graphics enhancements, texture fixes, resolutions up to 8k, etc...
      • Control fixes, better movement, etc..
      • Online for the Mario party multiplayer.
      • Controller Gyro support to mimic the original control scheme

  3. Sonic Rush Series​

      1. Screen Ratio fix for non dual screens, And 2 window option so we could place one window each in a monitor above the other monitor, (aka giant DS).
      2. Zoom in / Zoom out camera
      3. Wide-screen and Ultra widescreen, resolutions up to 8k, Graphical enhancements, texture fixes, HD sprites, and Model replacements.
      4. Sound/Music replacements using HQ samples
      5. Allowing for Cross-Game progression, (package both and once I finish Rush, it immediately boots up Rush Adventure. Allow me to farm resources in Rush Adventure by playing Rush stages. Similar to OOT/MM cross game progression ala the video linked here.)
      6. Online (Time trials, Races, etc...)
      7. Mods, Custom Stages, Characters, movesets, expansions, etc...
      8. Allow Non-Touch controls from Special Stages

SATBK's multiplayer absolutely needs rebalancing to make Sonic less overpowered.

His last appearance wasn't that long ago. Sega just needs to get over the Classic/Modern separation autism and stick him, Mighty, and Ray into a game like Crossworlds.
