I decided to buy all the 'good' Sonic games during a sale but refunded most of it. Frontier is unreal5 type slop, okay, but the reviews were good and I'm fine with open world crap. But holy hell it both looks and runs like a x360 title. And people gave that one Sonic game a mediocre rating but they add Shadow and suddenly it's overwhelmingly positive.

Sonic fans are nuts, and I'm not talking about the ones who do sonic AI bimbo porn either.

Frontiers is a very strange case. Its honestly a mediocre game that got saved entirely by being broken in half by the ability to launch Sonic off of Rails while boosting and bypass the abysmal air speed cap by boosting after homing attacking into something. SEGA leaned into this an added more shit that breaks the game in half like the Spindash as well as options to remove the Air Resistance, if you actually play Sonic Froniters as it was originally intended its a pretty miserable game. If you play it to break the game in half with these physics exploits I think its decent

The last free DLC for the game added levels that more or less expects you to utilize the broken tools they added, so that was something.

Shadow Gens is good

Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations are different games. They have separate EXEs and run off different engines, they're merely bundled together. And Shadow Generations is gameplay-wise unironically the most polished 3D Sonic game to have come out since Adventure 2. It's the only 3D boost game I don't have any major complaints as to how it controls or feels to play.

I see Sonic fans have once more entered the cycle of a Sonic game getting moderate success and it instantly goes to their heads and they believe Sonic has finally beaten Mario forever.

the demo for crossworlds dropped last night. and it's just as great as it was in the ONT, except there are only small things you have access to, you can only play as sonic, tails, knuckles, and amy, but some carts that you can use that weren't in the ONT. plus only one grand prix and online is unavailable. damn shame, because the ONT had more content to work with. but then again, we're playing the demo.

another thing to know is that all of your progress from the Open Network Test does not carry over to the full game or even the demo. but your progress from the demo wil carry over to the full game. which means all those challenges we finished, we have to do em all over again.

a reminder that the game will be released next week on thursday sept 25th. anyone who pre-purchased the digital deluxe edition like myself will get early access to the game on Monday sept 22nd!

Also, I like how you're scripted to lose against Sonic now due to the SEGA mandates.
Pretty sure Shadow loses because that already happened in the original Sonic Gens and they can't really change that. I guess they could have had you still have a boss fight against Sonic where you win in gameplay, but you'd still lose in the following cutscene so Sonic can get the Chaos Emerald to continue Sonic Gens plot as it happened, and then you'd probably still be saying the same thing.

Shadow Gens is literally Sonic Generations with some things added, that's why it's actually good, kek. Also, I like how you're scripted to lose against Sonic now due to the SEGA mandates.
I suggest you watch the Racing Crossworlds Animation

Frontiers had characters go through development. Or at least, try to (it will be up to the next mainline game if something like that sticks). Instead, it becomes unintentionally hilarious as there's very little going for each character. Hence, Tails speaks only in Redditisms, Knuckles is retroactively made a good leader so that him being one in Sonic Forces isn't as inane, Amy's bit focuses on love (but not for Sonic himself, derp), etc. At the same time, Sonic awkwardly stands here, listening to their rants.

The bosses and some levels are cool enough for one playthrough at least.

It also lets you play as Knuckles, Tails and Amy in a 3d Sonic game, something that hasn't happened for like a decade (not counting Sonic Boom). They do have different movesets and it felt like a test run for a future game.

I expected that if you did defeat Sonic against all odds, Shadow would lose/give the plot-rock in one way or another. That would have been understandable.
Instead, they don't even give you a chance to do that, as Shad is distracted by Doom and loses immediately. I'm not sure if it's due to laziness, or Sonic's extra-thick plot armor.

Considering he got 80% of The Resistance killed or wiped out in Forces during that city level, that makes it more hilarious.

Frontiers is a good proof of concept and it's honestly fun to play, but if you can clearly see it struggling to keep itself together at times. The character writing, tone, story and music are what give it the flavour that helped it sell all of those copies (though the first movie undoubtedly helped).

The Final Horizon DLC had a lot of improvements, so I'm hoping they build upon those for the next 3D game. As others have mentioned, Shadow Generations is great.
