problem is that she’s barely in the comic at all.

She's too powerful and carries Emeralds with her. Without powerful enemies besides Eggman and/or a plan that can affect her, there's little for Blaze to do, other than the odd story centered on whatever happens in her world.
An issue that becomes obvious very quickly in this comic: Nothing matters because they're bound to the games, so the main cast can't be touched. Until GUN comes back, the writers are hamstrung in what they can do, as there's nothing for Eggman and others to do other than attack/fawn over Sonic.
Also, Sonic is a bit too nice for his own good in this comic.
Shadow would most certainly kill Eggieman in IDW if he could.

Blaze used to be a bit vulnerable, but she got her character development, and no one knows what to do with her anymore. She's like Sonic but better because she has fire powers, can fly, and has her own version of the Emeralds.

Blaze is probably hit the hardest by the franchise's core problems of lack of a rogues gallery, having no clue what to do with 90% of its cast, and not really doing spinoffs anymore, because honestly, what can you do with "Sonic But Better, has her own sidekick and her own kingdom and her own powers and her own chaos emeralds and is mostly in an entirely different dimension but doesn't show up in that one show that's all about different dimensions, and is honestly the most liable to kill Eggman if they ever got into a direct confrontation" other than have her occasionally show up to say hi? She always felt like a crossover character to me for this reason.

I mean Sega already had problems before when it came to specific characters still being around.

Knuckles is supposed to be the guardian of the floating island and the master emerald and yet he keeps hanging out with Sonic'n'Tails, so who is guarding the island and master emerald while he's gone? Especially since Rouge was introduced, you know damn well that bitch is going to fuck with his shit on the constant.

Looking back, making the guy who's whole deal is staying in one spot and guarding an extremely exposed, extremely powerful and attractive artifact part of the series' most iconic trio in a franchise all about adventure was a retarded idea from the start because every single story that involves him has to explain or awkwardly ignore why he isn't at Angel Island doing his defining job.

Most problems with side characters "not having anything to do" can be easily solved by just making games where you can play as characters other than Sonic. Whether that be games like the Adventure era games where you had multiple characters and storylines, or spin-offs starring someone else. This sort of stuff is only a problem because almost every game for the past 18 years has had Sonic as the sole playable character, and that automatically sidelines everyone else because if there's anything cool they could do, the player should be doing that, which means Sonic does it.

When I was a kid I played sonic 1, sonic 2, and then adventure, later getting sonic 3 and knuckles on pc and then later than that as used games for like 10-20 dollars. It's not that I didn't know about knuckles' deal, I just didn't own the games till after the jump to 3d happened. This obviously made it feel like the master emerald was only in one place, and it seemed games just did that forever afterwards. Thing is in the OG genesis game it's hidden underground, while in Sonic adventure onwards it's above ground. I also knew about this but just chalked it up to a retcon or something, and a lot of people did I think, but the idea that knuckles moves it around between several locations I think has actually been brought up. I have a headache and am probably gonna go unconscious, probably noticable with my wording.

There's also that one time in SA2 where he inexplicably shrinks it to normal emerald size to put in his ass pocket

He never does this in any other game but you could probably just explain it away with this as fucking nonsensical as it is given every other time he's got the master emerald he's lugging it around full sized by one arm.

Real, Milton Knight (art director, lead animator, cartoonist) made this model sheet of Eggman. Which is still probably the best Eggman to date. Second to his satam counterpart.
