What's the best way to play Sonic Heroes now? I played it on PS2 originally but that version was so damn buggy that I fear no longer having those bugs might take away from my nostalgia now. Struggling to switch to the correct character because it would randomly count your input on the controller twice was an integral part of the experience.

The best way is to play a different game Best way seems to be to use the PC port (which is also abandonware, you can just download it here https://www.myabandonware.com/game/sonic-heroes-cm5) in combination with with the mods from SH Essentials (https://gamebanana.com/studios/35481). They recently revamped their widescreen patch

Otherwise I’d just play the GameCube version through Dolphin, the GameCube version was the most stable version of the game

What the fuck did Tails do to receive the literal shit eating ire of the Sonic fandom's wrath? I know Sonic fan artists can't be asked to be sane for more than 5 minutes and every character gets raped in some way, but Tails seems to get disproportionately targeted.

Because they don't know how to make a character interesting other than making them evil or just NSFW-ing the crap out of them and, to be fair, neither does SEGA.

Tails' tails is literally the most original thing about his design and character up to this day. The "smart sidekick with gadgets" trope was overused even back when he was introduced. The ending in Sonic Mania plus where he is just spinning on a bar stool is probably the most interesting thing I've seen about him, he is just a child so he likes childish things.

Absolutely, he is like Kevin from Home Alone, young but not stupid or a complete pushover like he is now. The only purpose given to Tails (and the other characters too) nowadays is to explain the plot/setting to Sonic.

Modern sonic fans apparently also hate anything in sa2 that isn't the sonic stages without mods to speed things up to unplayable levels so I don't even know what the fuck they want. I think I was already over this a while back in the thread, but there's some funny shit I've witnessed where people install mods that make the mech characters as fast as gamma was, and then claim the level design is bad when they veer off the fucking cliff during a platform segment with their big clunky mech that's running like a spindly robot guy with wheel legs. It's clearly not just a speed thing though as funny of a joke as that'd be to make, no they complain about the sonic/shadow stages too sometimes and then it goes to "sonic was never good". Bitch why the fuck are you even here, then? Just cause you want to fuck the characters? Fuck off! I wanna brutalize people and robots as a funny little jumping or shooting guy! I've BEEN doing that with the bing wahoo and the gotta got fast and the shoot bang or jump on shit games in general for decades now!

Oh god this actually reminded me somehow how neatly realistic the lighting in this specific SA2 tails stage is.

Yeah it's reused assets from speed highway and city escape, and the models are clearly dreamcast era stuff, but there's a really cool ambiance to it all. I've noticed a lot of modern games and remasters of other games with similar " good lighting but lower poly models" seem to always trade for "HD models and everything's lit like it's daytime despite it being a grimy dark place"


Also highway/road signs are infinitely better of a directional guide than the modern yellow paint method.
