So far, we've been discussing some Sega Gen music, so I'll add in this as well
Ristar's OST is so fucking good

since we're talking about the sega genesdis. might as well bring up the first sonic game. released in 1991.

@fuck product placement and @NerdShamer i see online from sega fans saying that sonic 1 is one of the hardest games for the sega genesis. there were also harder games like comix zone, ecco the dolphin, and contra hard corp.

the sega genesis was released in october 1988 in japan and august 1989 in the us. so sega wanted to make a new mascot for their company and the genesis. Alex kidd was their mascot for the genesis' predecessor, the Sega master system.

the game is known to have some hard stages. the special stages can also be a pain in the ass. but the most memorable stage from sonic 1 was green hill zone, which was brought back in later sonic games, it was an unlockable bonus stage in sonic adventure 2. it also came back in sonic generations.

but what i think one of the hardest stages is the labyrinth zone. gamers say it's one of the worst water levels ever. one of the bad things about it is, when you hear that drowning timer, your anxiety really starts to spike out.

its great that sega's mascot was born, but damn, sonic 1 can be challenging as hell if you're not fully familiar with it.

there was also a sonic 1 game released for the game gear and the sega master system.

I can't really say that it's the hardest game that Sega ever made, but it's certainly one of the hardest ones in the series. But the difficulty felt fairly inconsistent.

They kind of are, but at least that you weren't placed on an timer. But the ones in Mania and Sonic 3 were certainly the worst ones in the series, imo.

Which was shit.

Yeah, that's mainly because of that one segment towards the end of second level.
gamers say it's one of the worst water levels ever.
But on the other hand, I've seen some more vitriol about the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time when it comes to this.

Hardest mega drive game HAS to be Dynamite Headdy

Can't even make it past that weird ass Baby Face boss and it's not even half way through the game!

Play the japanese version. The western version was made intentionally harder for... reasons.

Streets of Rage 3 has the same problem in the west. They made the normal difficulty easy mode, hard mode is normal, etc...

Incidentally, BOTH games also had their stories fucked with in the west. In Headdy's case, the dailogue was outright removed and Fingly/Heather is no longer a love interest

Bridge Zone music is GOAT, regardless of whether or not it intentionally took from Together Again by Janet Jackson.

I know MJ liked Sanic, but it didn't really work out between him and Sega.

I cannot speak for Dynamite Heddy, but SOR3 was made harder to encourage more rentals from movie/video game rental stores.... which makes sense considering Sega had its origins in the arcades and stuck to them far longer than Nintendo did.

same reason Ecco the Dolphin was made as balls-crushingly hard as it is

also 8 bit Sonic soundtracks kick fucking ass:
^this track in particular is one of the top 5 water level thems in the whole franchise

you're talking about blue sphere. aren't you?

yeah these special stages were challenging but also fun. but when you get to the & knuckles half of the game and you do the ones for the super emeralds, that's when the game really forces you to pay attention, because if you break your concentration for just one second, you mess it up. took me awhile to get it done.

blue sphere was optional in mania, you didn't need to do them to get the emeralds. the real special stages to get them were great, and the music made it felt awesome.

If they decide to remake a Sonic game, I want the '06 concept to have another chance. Day/night cycle, but rewrite the whole Princess Elise time travel debacle. Actually, make the princess a queen that is Queen Elizabeth.

It's so dumb that the princess was Blaze.

Why? is not like the stores bought more than 5, maybe 10 copies each, or did SEGA get a cut of the rentals?

Video game companies were always doing business with rental stores. The most well known one was how ClayFighter 63 1/3 Sculpture Cut was ONLY a rental game at Blockbuster, which is why it goes for insane prices online.

According to eBay, prices for an actual copy of ClayFighter 63 1/3 Sculpture Cut range from $900 to over $150,000. It's impossible to sell something with a ridiculously high price expecting people to buy a certain company with that kind of money

@Super Guido and @Vyse Inglebard since you guys are talking about the game gear music from sonic gamers. let's talk about these two sonic games on the game gear.

first up is Sonic Chaos. thats it's name in the west. in Japan, it's called Sonic and Tails.

1713890293883.png

it was released for the game gear in US, japan, and europe. but it was also released for the sega master system in europe, australia, and brazil.

in sonic chaos, you can choose to play as either sonic or tails. both characters have their own unique powers and abilities and power ups. sonic has his super peel out ability from sonic cd, its basically triggered like the spin dash but push up on the d pad instead of down. and his exclusive power up are the rocket shoes, which make him fly super fast. while tails has the ability to fly.

then there is the game's sequel. Sonic Triple Trouble, thats what its called in the west. its called Sonic and Tails 2 in japan.

1713890740372.png

it was released exclusively to the game gear. it didn't get a port to the sega master system.

the story is that robotnik is after the emeralds again, so he tricks knuckles once again into thinking that sonic and tails are the enemies and they are after the chaos emeralds. and the third problerm sonic and tails face in the race for the emeralds is a greedy treasure hunter named fang the sniper, this game is his debut to the franchise. he finds out that sonic and tails, robotnik, and knuckles are all after the emeralds. he does not know the power of the emeralds, but what he does know is that nice shiny jewels will fetch a nice fat profit on the market. so sonic and tails rasce for the emeralds, fighting knuckles, robotnik, and fang to get the emeralds.

like sonic chaos, you can choose to play as either sonic and tails and they have their own unique abilities and power ups. sonic has his super peel out dash and his power ups are the rocket shoes and tails can fly and his power up is the hyper heli tails power up which is basically the same as sonic's rocket shoes for tails. in the special zones. you fight fang in there.

in the game's water level, the Tidal Plant Zone, sonic and tails' power ups are pretty much the same as their flying power ups but aquatic based. sonic has the propeller shoes which help him swim and move alot easier in the water, and tails has his sea fox instead, his submarine from his stand alone game Tails' adventure. they both use these power ups when you fight knuckles in the zone's boss stage

the game also has a boss fight with metal sonic in the last zone.

these games, are in my opinion the best sonic games on the game gear. You can play sonic chaos on mega collection plus and triple trouble on gems collection. You can play them both on sonic adventure XD when you get enough emblems and missions done to unlock them

also, @NerdShamer i think you're already aware of this. the sega master system was so overwhelimgly successful in brazil, that there are games still being manufatured there for it to this day.

Why not Silver?
HAHA, YOU GET IT? SILVERHAND
Bob Odenkirk would've been a good Silver. Then again, Hayden Christiansen would've been a good Shadow, but no, Fowler wanted to appease the Reddit crowd with Keanu instead.

Since Xbox Live Marketplace is shutting down in a few months, I was hoping to buy a port of old Genesis Sonic games. Turns out they took them down, for whatever reason, same with Sonic CD(even tho the page is still up and you can download a demo + videos on the game like trailers. This means that this isn't about hosting costs?). You know what's still there? These awful Sonic 4 mobile games they tried masquerading as true Sonic 3 sequels back in the day. They even got Sonic Fighters there but the original two titles and CD are gone, for whatever reason.
Late reply, but no one ever addressed this. Sega took down nearly every rerelease of the classic games when Origins was released. The only ones that stayed up were the SEGA AGES versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on Switch, and Sonic 2 on Switch Online.
If I wanted to play the original 3 titles, what would be the optimal way to do so today?
If you’re on a PC, play Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic CD Restored. These are all mods of the mobile ports. Sonic 3 has the equally-great Sonic 3 A.I.R.

If you’re not on PC, just use an emulator. Some of those mods are on Android and even Switch through homebrew, but you’ll have to look around.
