Since Xbox Live Marketplace is shutting down in a few months, I was hoping to buy a port of old Genesis Sonic games. Turns out they took them down, for whatever reason, same with Sonic CD(even tho the page is still up and you can download a demo + videos on the game like trailers. This means that this isn't about hosting costs?). You know what's still there? These awful Sonic 4 mobile games they tried masquerading as true Sonic 3 sequels back in the day. They even got Sonic Fighters there but the original two titles and CD are gone, for whatever reason. Oh well, at least the two adventure titles are still available, altho Sega really wants to jew you out of your money and sells DX/Battle upgrades as DLC for a few further dollars each.

If I wanted to play the original 3 titles, what would be the optimal way to do so today?

The best way to play Sonic 1 and 2 is to use the decompilations of the iOS/Christian Whitehead port on PC, and the best way to play Sonic 3 is to get a ROM of Sonic 3 and Knuckles and use the Angel Island Remaster.

Or try to buy both a CRTV, any Genesis model and original Sonic 1, 2 and 3&K cartridges, depending on the respective prices, and you'll have a better experience playing them

you guys can also try and find mega collection for gamecube or mega colection plus for xbox or ps2. and gems collection to play sonic cd. if you live in the uk, you can get it for ps2.

Well, not any Genesis model. The Model 2s are fine but the Model 1 has a far cleaner sound chip, and they're typically more reliable as well (they also look cooler IMO).
Clean sound chip or not, Genesis' sound chip still consist of fart noises

i really don't get comments like these when there's PLENTY of examples of Genesis games with songs that sound fucking fantastic.
Because they've played one or two games that was composed on GEMS and think it represents the entire library.

Even then, GEMS can make some things sound really good
