Spinball had a fire soundtrack honestly, probably better than the game it is attached too.
I partly agree, but here's the intro to that game:
Firstly, how did they fuck up the "SEGA" jingle so hard? Secondly, that intro music is pure ear cancer, and it the first thing you hear upon starting the game. I agree that Spinball has great tracks, but there's plenty that makes me think, "My God, did the developers not have ears?"

Yeah that History section music in Mega Collection is just amazing, really loved scrolling through all the Archie cover artwork of it too, especially in a bittersweet hindsight-sense knowing how it got fucked over royally.

@Dom Cruise If you're still with us, how's 2D Sonic going so far?

3D Sonic has always been kind of hit or miss but if you really want any feedback regarding some of the more average to alright 3D Sonic's to try and get your hands on to see how it goes/got some tolerance for it:

- Sonic Adventure's decent in a sense, but it definitely reeks of development shortcuts as the most effort/time went into Sonic's gameplay/stage count while all the other 5 characters feel like afterthoughts in terms of lenght and how almost all of their stages consist of shortened/altered portions of Sonic's stages. Besides the banger OST there's really nothing much home to write about imo, but the DX version while more sloppy in some collission and graphics area's has a map function to help navigate through the jungle maze and mission mode to fuck around with. (As well as all the Game Gear games as unlockables in the Gamecube release of the game)

- Adventure 2's alright depending on your approach. If playing casually you might struggle with some of the more frustrating gimmicks they throw at you in a good chunk of the stages especially the later ones but you should be able to plow through it. Sonic and Shadow's stages are more linear and the rewarding factor lies in replaying the stages to know how to get through it quickly and score bonus points for doing fancy stuff fast for better ranks. Shooting and treasure hunting is meh but as long as you deal with it it isn't that horrible.
If playing with the mindset of wanting to get all A ranks/emblems, this game becomes a nightmare of trial and error gameplay that'll frustrate the shit out of you, so imo definitely avoid going that route unless you're a masochist. Janky 3D Green Hill ain't worth it imo.

- Heroes is so-so. It follows the same stage design mentality of SA2's Sonic/Shadow stages where you're encouraged to replay stages and learn the 3-character swapping mechanics in order to get the most fun out of it and this game does deliver on some good setpieces here and there. The main issues lie in that all 4 teams go through the exact same order of stages with the only major differences being a few attack/ability tweaks and stage length/enemy placements so it really comes off as a cheap way to artificially extend gameplay time, some of the stages especially the later ones can go on for 7 to over 10 minutes even if you know how to breeze through them and the characters have really slippery acceleration so it's very likely you'll fall off if not cautious with moving around. Oh and the true final boss requires essentially playing the whole game 4 times in a row and get all the Chaos Emeralds from really janky special stages.

Those are the only ones I've played up until 2006 where I stopped playing 3D Sonic to give my own feedback on. Unleashed is alright from what I heard too but on PS3/360 versions but the Werehog parts seem like really shitty God of War trendchasing much like how Shadow's spinoff tried to ride off the whole 2000's edgy alien shooter genre/attitude to shitty results.

Talking to the wrong guy, I listen to alot of harsh noise and extreme metal.

I took a break but I'm picking it back up tonight, I'm gonna give Sonic 3D Blast an earnest try to see if I think it's worth finishing, even though I've heard this one is mediocre.

I did play Sonic 3 & Knuckles and honestly? I like vanilla Sonic 3 better, granted I just did a Sonic run and not Knuckles but for now I'm just doing causal playthroughs and not trying to get all the Gems etc.

One neat thing about vanilla Sonic 3 is that almost every Robotnik fight is element themed, fire, water, air, electricity etc.

If you own the game on Steam, I recommend BetterSADX. You get the original graphics etc. with all the content from SADX. Best of both worlds.

I also have a bit of a soft spot for vanilla Sonic 3 as well.

I feel that that half of the complete S3 got all of the best levels, though that's not to say the S&K are not fun as hell as well.

Also Jackson's music in that version is just better, let's get real.

I know you’re playing Mega Collection so this doesn’t apply, but there’s a Director’s Cut hack that’s made by the original game’s director using the original source code that improves upon nearly every aspect.

That’s why there are so many rom hacks/mods that aim to combine the best of both games. Also, playing as Knuckles gives a bit of a different experience, especially in the second half of S&K.

Neat, I never noticed that. Every act 2 boss has its own element except Launch Base, which is neutral.

I would also recommend the mod that puts the jap dub with the better subs, you get a more accurate representation of the story and better voice acting.

That's probably objectively better, but half the charm of old games is their cheesy voice acting and questionable translations imo.

Tbh, I do like the SA 1 and 2 us cast, but I just got used to listening to the jp one because its just more concistently good and they have been the same voices since the adventure series.

I'm starting to think that maybe Flynn and Evan's previous work on writing stories for the Sonic comics was just a flash in the pan, or they've just lost touch with it, if this is what the big 'story arc' that started with Impostor Syndrome was supposed to culminate in. Surge's character motivation continues to be very convoluted.

Sadly I agree, since they have been shown Surge and Kit have been very disappointing, too bad, I actually like their designs.

yea youre the guy sonic 3 complete and air were made for. me personally I enjoy Sonic & Knuckles half slightly more because its levels feel a bit more treacherous and a bit more fun. Sonic 3 has a great ending and a great beginning, the two middle levels are the weakest of the two halves. Sandopolis sucks but thats one zone or really one act of a zone

this might be me personally but as a character design sort of fascinator I think all the sonic characters made for the comics are so obnovious to me and im glad theyre not being used outside of them. for all the faults of the "sonic's shitty friends" trend all of those characters are well designed, but all the comics literally look like furry bait that doesnt fit into the philosophy of how a sonic character should be drawn

Come now, Marble Garden might be the weakest of the Sonic 3 levels, but you can't tell me Carnival Night sucks.
