The original prototype music, which I’ve admittedly only recently listened to, sounds incomplete to me, as if they were meant to have more music added to them later, like rough demos or something. Even putting aside the music that they are replacing, they just sound really underwhelming and spare when put against Angel Island and Hydro City. Earlier in this thread, I expressed optimism at Senou working on the replacement tracks. I guess that’s what I get for letting my guard down when it comes to this company and this franchise

To quote my sonic fag friend

Legit how sega?
Is the sonic 3 portion just a massive ad for sonic 3 AIR?
According to Sonic Retro, supposedly Jun Senoue, while good at writing music, sucks shit at arranging it on FM synthesizer or converting it to SMPS format (the Sega Genesis music). Some of them think he imported the MIDIs from the PC version into FL Studio and used a Sega Genesis soundfont for that.

Some people were pointing out the issue with the Sonic Stadium recordings (the PlayStation recording software made it sound less crisp and more blurry) but I'm pretty sure that's just a giant cope.

“The music from the leaked incomplete prototype build sounds incomplete”
Gee, I wonder why…

I think there are only one or two songs that went completely unchanged between that prototype and the final build, with everything else at least undergoing some sort of instrument or tempo change, if not melody.

Carnival Night Act 2.

Some of the notes are literally discordant in the Origins mix. Regardless of your opinion on the prototype tracks, it's a lot harder to listen to.
Imagine sounding worse than the literal MIDI version that you get on PC Sonic 3 & Knucles, fifteen years ago.

I loved this version, by the way, since I grew up on it.

Is there a way for one to mod in more extras into the Extras Menu.

Or will we just have to wait for more DLC for that.

We'll just have to see, tune in next time on SONIC ORIGINS!

Someone possibly worked out Michael Jackson actually did do something:
This is an outstanding read and I'm very appreciative of the work you've done here. I just wanted to chime in a bit:
Morris said:
Carnival Night, the first MJ team track you'll hear in the game. This song is, of course, heavily based on Michael Jackson's Jam (1991). Even using some samples from the song. It is unknown which of the MJ team members composed this track.
I have a theory - I think this might be the track that Jackson worked on himself.

From what I've gathered based on interviews, Jackson's vision for the Sonic 3 soundtrack was to produce tracks that contained extensive sampling and incorporated his past work. For example, I remember hearing something (I can't find the source, so you'll just have to trust me on this) across the lines of him wanting to incorporate one of his songs (can't remember which, it might've been "Black and White") into the soundtrack.

But as far as I'm concerned, the tracks of his team's that did make it into the game don't adhere to this MO. They don't include too many samples or references to Jackson's prior songs. There are "Hey!"s and "Go!"s here and there in IceCap and Launch Base, but nothing like what we've heard Jackson had planned... except Carnival Night.

Carnival Night contains extensive sampling, including samples taken directly from "Jam", and shares chord structures with "Jam". It sounds very close to what we've heard Jackson envisioned. What's also important is how poor quality the samples are. They sound very compressed; their lack of fidelity lends credence to the claim that Jackson left the project because he was dissatisfied with how the Genesis replicated his music.

Then let's not forget S4, E3 of GameTrailers' Pop Fiction, which is dedicated to the MJ/Sonic 3 conundrum. (I've timestamped the information that's relevant to this discussion.) An anonymous developer, who GameTrailers verified did in fact work on the project, stated that the tracks MJ team had finished were used in the game, and specifically names Carnival Night as having been composed in part by Jackson.

My theory is this: Jackson agreed to work on Sonic 3. He did some composing, and finished Carnival Night. When he heard how the music would sound on the Genesis hardware, he got upset and, coupled with the humiliation of the abuse allegations, decided to leave the project to the rest of his team.

Of course, this is all just a theory, I could be completely talking out of my ass for all I know. But I just wanted to put it out there!

So here's what they meant by "characters on title screen" when it comes to the pre-order DLC.

Not too sure why anyone would one these, they would be just neat little extra if they were unlockables but they aren't and you have to paid for them.

Also they don't even have Knuckles, just shameful but at least you don't have to pay for Metal Sonic, I guess.

This isn't even all of them, this video I got and clipped didn't have the Sonic on the Mission screen, he's just kinda there, rowing in what looks to be a can or something.

Either way this makes me wish they actually did something involving Sonic Spinball if only for the intro of the game (starting cutscene to first level), which is debatably one of the best things about it.

Edit: I learned that Sonic on Mission screen is actually a reference to Sonic Spinball which is neat at least.

So what's possible according to that last tweet, is that they put the wrong version of the altered songs in Sonic 3. Have I got that right?

As much as I like the games, I have never seen a series where it appears that both the publisher and developers are as incompetent as each other. Usually it's one or the other.

Sonic 3 was always treated as the red headed step child. Ever since Taxman & Stealth worked on the HD Mobile ports of CD, 1 and 2, people have been begging for Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) to get the same treatment. Keep in mind that before those ports, we had this game on more than one multi-collection
  • S&K PC Collection
  • Sonic Jam on Saturn
  • Sonic Mega Collection (GameCube and PLUS for the PS2/Xbox OG)
  • Sonic Classic Collection for the DS
That's not even counting the seperate digital downloads for it. PC Collection was the only one that had the different music, hence why people associate those 3 tracks with it.

The excuse people were given more than once was "music licensing issues", which was the same excuse they gave for Sonic CD. The difference is that eventually that shit got resolved with the HD ports of Sonic CD since it allowed for either the US or JP versions of the songs, while Sega is still sitting with their thumb up their ass about Sonic 3K. Whether or not it really is MJ's estate/lawyers or Brad Buxer regarding that "Hard Times" tune thats linked to Ice Cap Zone is still up for debate. The important thing is that the prototype shown on Twitch via Sonic Retro showed physical evidence that the PC Collection songs were indeed the original songs for Sonic 3, so it should be a no brainer to anyone even outside of the Sonic-Sphere that if you have licensing issues, just use your own in-house songs you made years ago. What absolutely NOBODY wanted was these tunes to be "redone/remade/revamped" to where they sound like shit.

Every new pice of news we get for Sonic origins keeps getting worse and worse. When all you have to do is literally give the fans what they want by releasing HD versions of old roms, and you can't even be fucked to do THAT properly, you fucking fail as a company.

I'd say they succeeded on that front. Despite some of the hiccups, we do have HD ports of all the games listed including S3&K. Really, the flawed aspects of Origins comes from the extra content for the most part and even that negligible in some areas (like the little menu visuals).
