Looks pretty ambitious for Sega.

Now where's out favorite mad scientist?
I'm guessing he'll either be brain controlled by the new robotic entities or he'll be working from the side lines, feel like they are going to pull a Chaos, Dark Gaia, Gmerl etc if he actually is the main villain.

People complained about the trend of Eggman being betrayed by a creature he's helping so SEGA listened, the same way they listened about the complain of Sonic's friends so Eggman was either the main villain with no real help like Sonic 4 and Colors or he showed up at the end as a kind of reverse betrayal like Lost World or Forces.

But it become a real problem after the latter, the former was simple rehashes trying to go back to how it used to be which people noticed of course but when both Lost World and Forces all of a sudden through their main villain to the side and made Eggman the real one out of the blue, that's when people got actually upset.

It's justified but once again we have a case where the fans don't like something, SEGA listens to them but the way around changing it is just so shitty and one sided that it makes people want to return to the old.

Doesn't help that they listen to a strong majority, acting like everyone would even want the change and that said majority even know what they really want in the end.

I can't tell if this is going to be awesome or fucking terrible.
I'm just expecting the usual: Excellent core concept but ruined by either some other gameplay element (Werehog) or a massive lack of polish that makes the game feel like shit.

So far this game looks like it runs like shit.

Its just Breath Of The Wild again. Its just the same game every company has been ripping off the past few years. BotW was a boring, empty, horribly overrated game in the first place. The world looks even emptier than BotW in the trailer, though, if you pay attention, you can see that we only got to see one little area. That is if the rail patterns arent copy pasted all around the world like literally everything in BotW. I wonder if it will have a horse and a crafting system, like all the BotW ripoffs have had. The robot designs look bland as fuck too, i think they are going more for movie eggman robots judging by the ball cluster. I cant see this being anything but a boring, empty, slow game.

I really wanted to be excited and optimistic for this game, but I just cant. I love sonic (as all retards do) and I want to see the games get better but it just seems like that will never happen. though, I cant say it wont be the best sonic game in recent times, as it doesnt look like there will be many slow as fuck 2d sections.

If Sonic has to run up 'towers' and have to press r1/l1 in order to dodge obstacles I will do nothing special because of course it will happen.

EDIT: Apparently IGN will be posting updates about the game all throughout the coming month, so stay tuned for that.

It's nice to see Sonic going in a different direction, and we haven't really had "open world" stuff since the Sonic Unleashed hub and Sonic 06, but this lowkey doesn't feel like Sonic if that makes sense? It feels like Sonic was dropped into a world like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, or any other "Open World" game.

Maybe it's the music and the way they're framing it, but watching the trailer feels more like watching something Ubisoft, Bioware or NaughtyDog would make. It just kinda lacks personality I guess?
The enemies are cool tho, and looking at the red light, I wonder if it'll be giving the Phantom Ruby another try? It was an interesting concept from forces at least, I'm sure they could do it better now that Pontac and Graff are no longer writers for the series.
Although I don't have too much hopes for Flynn either as he'll blame any problems people have with the writing on Sega and really make things ship orientated as he has a strange boner for Amy.

Don't think people have ever really asked for an open world sonic game, sure yeah more akin to the adventure games and Unleashed but nothing quite on the same scale or scope as say, Immortals Fenyx Rising, which was heavily influenced by Botw in a lot of ways and I can certainly see the influence rubbing off here.

Remains to be seen how good the actual game will be, knowing Sonic's past track record, I'm gonna keep my expectations very very low.

Everyone already said what my thoughts were (looks a bit unpolished, world looks nothing like a Sonic game, can't tell if it's gonna be good or bad), so I'll just go with a good old....

We'll see.

It's sad because either Sega saw people wanting a return to the more open Adventure/06/Unleashed stage format and decided to up the anti, or they saw the popularity of open world games and wanted to cash in on that.
Either way, they're completely missing the mark and chances are, they're trying to appeal to critics yet again and we've seen how that turns out.

But still, the plus side is that they're trying something new I guess? They've been playing it safe ever since Colors dropped and relying heavily on nostalgia to sell their games, this at the very least is different from the Green-Hill-Zone-and-Classic-Sonic-for-the-thousandth-time-PLEASE-RECOGNIZE-THEM-AND-BUY-tm strategy they've been using.

My problem is that it's yet another bland green area that doesn't look any different from any field area in any other open world game, with generic looking robots.

Where's the uniqueness? Where's the charm? Where's the originality? Where's the vibrant colors?

I personally think the reactions to the game are overblown, it’s understandable but alot of it just feels like people are trying to find things to be mad about.

I’m still mixed myself, I think the combat looks freakishly similar to Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric and I’m mixed on the robot designs but even with that we’ve seen looking generic robots before with the gun ones which people don’t seem to really have a problem with.

There’s other examples I could bring up that aren’t just robots alone like the Iblis spawn which also weren’t the stereotypical Sonic enemy, something that was done on purpose to make it obvious that we’re dealing with a different threat here.

Also the last thing I have to say is that Sonic has always been a follower of trends, he went followed the handheld game trend would not only mobile games but also the old Game Gear ones.

There’s Shadow the hedgehog that went for edgy trend at the time and 06 with the more realistic games at the time plus Sonic following Mario’s lead with games like Lost World and Colors.

Hell one could say Sonic was born out of following the platformer craze that came from Mario, the point of all of this is that this is not new for Sonic and I don’t see a problem with them following the Open World style of games if the game is good and it looks pretty interesting from the little that we’ve seen.

The game could turn out to be shit but I really don’t want to be rooting for a games failure or expecting it to be one especially because we’ve seen so little and it’s a long time until it’s release.

--extra part--
Sonic's never really played it safe like it Mario who rarely changes, Sonic from the beginning was attached to a edgy alternative and was basically a hippie game about fighting against the man and saving the animals.

New enemies would be introduced every new zone along with new hazard or gimmicks, it was never straightforward like Mario which slowly introduced new elements.

All of this goes to the cartoons which brings into question what really is Sonic's identity with the diffrent settings one being dark and other being wacky and goofy, the cartoons bring in qustion what Sonic really is didn't change either with Sonic X being that way (mainly it's last season) and Sonic Boom.

No buddy really knows what the fuck is a Sonic, there are so many diffrent place styles and designs of Sonic, friends and his enemies but it's hard to really judge what truly is Sonic, something that again isn't the case for Mario. (For the most part)

I like what SEGA is doing here with something that's new for Sonic but still somewhat familiar, a return to the old game's settings without just pulling a Force Awakens like Sonic 4 but rather more like Sonic Advance in somewhere.

Jesus Christ, does every open world game have to be "basic bitch grassy green field"? I can't tell the fucking difference between them anymore.

We were so close to moving away from the totally not completely unique Green Hill zone as the first stage you play on for over a decade now? And yet here we are again, looking at a Green Hill zone, but this time with a touch of barren empty wasteland.
