I can't believe some Sonic fans legitimately think Frontiers will be dramatically better then what we see in this demo because "It was just a demo!". I swear a lot of Sonic fans don't actually play other video games.

Frontiers looks a tech demo that needs at least another year to be properly made, why make an open world game if you're going to try to automate the fuck out of it like every other 3D sonic game? It is like they saw BOTW and forgot people liked having freedom to do things normally as intended or even just outright break the physics entirely to achieve the same result of getting to X location. They are too lazy/incompetent to make a moveset for Sonic that worked in this genre. So they just added rails, dash pads, runnable walls, and springs so they don't have to think at all. Just slap some shit on the floor and Sonic explores the world as intended.
It's like they saw BOTW and didn't realize people like Hyrule because it was designed for Link, so they just added it in to Frontiers and didn't make any alterations to suit Sonic's playstyle aside from random rails here and there.

As a basic idea of what they could have done is you could make the boost capable of ascending walls and crossing water but you have to generate enough meter prior to your ascent or even during it in order to scale a hill/mountain/river/lake/etc or you fall. So it effectively functions like Link's stamina, just in a more bursty Sonic sort of way that fits his character and abilities. That would take actual balancing and testing, so just add automated bullshit so the player doesn't actually have any fun and only looks like they are.

The boost isn't inherently a terrible mechanic for this game, it just needs to do something besides make Sonic go fast and one shot enemies.

I'd love to see a boost system based around encouraging the player to do stunts and other fun things.

Go through a loop? Get boost. Do a big jump? Get boost. Drifting? Get boost. Break through something? Get boost.

Imagine Burnout Paradise style open world design where you progress by playing in a fun way. You could have time trials in the world where you race from point A to point B that are activated by running through a start gate so you don't have to stop. Have collectables you smash by going fast into them, fast robots you have to chase down and destroy. This game doesn't seem to embrace the fun thing about Sonic: his speed.

You know, I always thought an open-world Sonic game would be a really good idea. Sonic Utopia proves the concept could work really well given the right mechanics. The problem with this is that they just slapped the Unleashed/Colors/Generations-style gameplay into a giant open map without really thinking about how those gameplay styles mesh with the level design. The Boost games are about traversing over many miles of terrain and reacting to obstacles along the way while doing the occasional platform segment to keep things fresh and interesting. This looks like they neither understand why the aforementioned games worked while not understanding why open-world games work.

Also, what the fuck is with the music? It's a Sonic game, not an artsy-fartsy indie game. The soundtrack should be bursting with energy, because that's emphasizes Sonic's personality and abilities. It's not even a matter of instrumentation, as Planet Wisp proves:

But, who knows. If Frontier turns out to be good, I'll gladly eat my own words, but for now I'm not exactly convinced.

The cope over this game is hysterical. I know Sonic fans are like battered wives with stockholm syndrome at this point but I unironically saw someone compare this game to Elden Ring.

If you want open world Sonic that's actually fun just play Utopia.
I've learned recently that a lot of new Sonic fans, like around the zoomer age where 06 or Unleashed was effectively their Sonic 1 through Sonic 3&K (man that is horrifying to think about) don't know shit about anything else except Sonic while also not actually knowing Sonic anyway. I've seen people very unironically try to explain how Sonic's "if you got time to worry, then run" line from 06 is some deep philosophical message and that they think Sonic 06 is some underrated gem that is over hated by classic or SA1/SA2 boomers. The fact the term "SA1/SA2 boomer" is even a thing now makes me realize how old I really am now compared to some people. I know someone who legit didn't know anything about 06 and unironically thought Blaze had her Rush backstory until it was shown to them that she doesn't, and she loves Silver as a character despite knowing so little about his debut game. New age Sonic fans are literally brainless I swear.

A lot of active Sonic fans legit don't know or just ignore how truly awful Sonic got post SA2 to Heroes/Shadow depending on who you ask and how garbage shit was after Generations. These people legit think stuff like Rise of Lyric or Forces were just one off flukes and not progressively becoming more the norm for this franchise in the last almost 20 years at this point. I think anyone around my age with Sonic has given up by Sonic Boom to Forces era and just checked out of these conversations entirely. So now we got literal abuse victims or zoomers who don't know the absolute shit history about this poor blue hedgehog who is not allowed to have a good video game.

Sonic Utopia is pretty much a tech demo so it's good but there's not that much to it, maybe that will change idk but right now it's just a cool proof-of-concept game.

The fan game Sonic Utopia looks leagues better:

The biggest issue I'm noticing between this and Frontier is that Utopia actually designs the open world around Sonic's speed and abilities, it looks and feels like a legitimate Sonic game. Frontier is not designed around Sonic's abilities whatsoever from the look of it, he's painfully slow, automated shit every, doesn't even look like a Sonic game.

He is, just by people that love him and not by SEGA or Sonic Team, as Mania has proven.
looking at the reception so far you don't want to enjoy things you want excuses to be upset

The sonic fandom for over a decade now has been nothing more than faggots boomers and contrarians wanting excuses to complain bitch and moan about any conceivable minuscule detail. Literally anything could have been revealed up to and including the second fucking coming and the exact same complaints being made right now would still be getting made garunteed

Pretty much every game in the past decade has been either okay or absolute trash. I'd rather play Black Knight then pretty much every Sonic game (except Mania) after Generations, at least Sonic's spinning slash thing is really stupid bonkers broken fun when you air dash into through enemy and chain kill them all while barely losing speed. Sonic 4, Sonic Boom, Forces, Lost World, or whatever they're all either just okay or garbage. People are tired of getting burned, especially people who fell into the 06 trap when 06 was actually a new game. SEGA couldn't even get a fucking port for Colors to be even reasonably good (without patching it immediately), and arguably made the game look worse with its HD update due to how overly bright everything is.

Forces looked like ass, and it was ass. Rise of Lyric looked like ass and it was ass. If Frontiers looks like ass now and it was delayed for a year to get us to this point and is coming probably holiday season of this year, then at best Frontiers will be Lost World levels of okay. Which considering the last good 3D game was about 10 years ago, then yes people deserve to question and be disappointed by Frontiers when it was hyped up just like Forces was. We got fed the "Forces devs were new hires" excuse almost 4 years ago, and I've seen people who believed in that still disappointed with Frontiers.

While I do like to complain, I was hoping Frontier was gonna be decent. It still can be, but from what we're seeing here the very design of the game is inherently flawed, boring, and it runs like ass. It's honestly pretty insulting.

Game design isn't just slapping a bunch of assets together and calling it good like we're seeing here. There's a pretty deep understanding of what makes a good and fun game that must be employed at the first level of designing a game, and it seriously seems like they skipped that step entirely.

Even if it looked better I'm kinda sick of the whole "woooooaaaa sonic is epic and serious" thing, I would rather have it like colors where you start off right in the middle of eggman's city/amusement park and explore that, then run off to the grassy fields to head to the next area fucked by eggman or aliens or whatever the hell they're doing

These are the same people who collectively believed that Colours Ultimate would somehow be drastically improved on release date. There was no day-one patch until around a week later.

Given how Sonic fans overlap with Pokemon fans, and the latter's slavish refusal to criticise anything that has 'Gameplay not final' slapped on top of it, there's little surprise there. It doesn't particularly help that there's a constant influx of zoomers who are apologists for the brand's worst products.

Speaking of Sonic fans, this is the latest thing making the rounds and is the subject of several spergouts for and against it. The Chaomix guy in question seems to have been enjoying a massive spike in popularity since his 06 apologist video.

Your typical 'fictional character is XYZ alphabet person' and you're wrong if you think otherwise argument.
