I got a hot take; Sonic Heroes is severely underrated. I played it again for the first time in like 8 years a while back. It was surreal; the Internet had re-conditioned me to hate it but I had so much fun playing it again. The game's structure resembles that of the classic Genesis games, with the two stages and a boss, and the level design gets really creative. The game's also got a much lighter approach to story, which is really interesting to me considering the early 3D era of Sonic, from Adventure to 06, tried to tell more complex and serious stories. And the music is really damn good; I'd forgotten how fucking awesome the music in the rail and mansion levels are.

I was also playing the game on PS2, which, from what I can tell, is the worst version by a significant margin ( running at 30 fps vs the 60 found in other versions, sound effects that are straight up absent). I dunno, even in its gimped state I was really enjoying it.

This isn't to say there aren't severe problems, because there most certainly are. The special stages are the absolute worst in Sonic history, especially the last few. And the game is pretty repetitive with all the teams navigating the same levels. The individual levels are different and they do try to mix things up, but they end up feeling like you're just doing the same thing again and again. The process of unlocking the final story is painful because of this; it's almost not worth 100%ing the game (I kinda quit halfway through Team Chaotix, though I also hate their mission-based levels).

I replayed sonic heroes to 100% during the lockdowns last year and I found that trying to get the A ranks really accentuates the games flaws i.e Floaty controls+over reliance on death pits

The Bingo levels were my favourite as a kid. Getting the A ranks on them as an adult made me want to tear my eyes out, as not dying is a prerequisite for A rank and good luck getting through those Bingo highways with no deaths, if it's not the wonky physics during those sections or random clipping through geometry, the game will find some other way to fuck you.. The number of times I cleared the highway just for sonic to randomly fall short of the platform legit made me want to fucking scream.

Other than that, the last few levels overstay their welcome, no sonic level needs to take 10+ minutes.

Heroes was a decent game to me at first when you want to play it with the mentality of just playing one team and getting used to the mechanics and putting up with some of the bullshit it throws at you. (Acceleration through the roof, wonky rail switching, claustrophobic combat in area's where you can easily fall off, bingo stages in general, etc.)

But when you try to go for either the true final boss or all of the A ranks, that's where the game's artificial padding really sticks out like a sore thumb, with you just mainly replaying the same order of stages 4 times in a row but with slightly different attack animations, enemy placement/level layout and Team Chaotix while trying to be different can be frustrating at times like the Espio-stealth missions.

If Heroes was more streamlined and tried to differentiate the teams in more creative ways other than just altering the level design slightly for all 4 of them, I'd like it a whole lot more, but at least getting a high score and blazing through the stages once you know what to do feels somewhat rewarding and some of the stage themes are a banger to listen to.

...Still better than the travesty that was Shadow the Hedgehog. (Seriously, 10 times through Westopolis just to unlock the final stage/boss? Heroes was less agonizing than that.)

I would take 100 Westopolises over having to do those fucking Emerald stages again.
Sonic Generations on the 3DS makes those Emerald stages a LOT more playable and fun, especially online. The first few stages are cheap easy wins though because they basically amount to "who can press Y to boost first", but from Emerald 4 on, it's more muscle memory because the obstacles become more of a threat and avoiding the springs is the faster approach than actually hitting them.

is he right? are people just retarded?
I like his idea of S&K having hard-to-reach areas.

SMW is sneaky with secret exits. You need Yoshi, P-blocks, and keys. Sonic 1 or 2 had loads of hidden items, honestly can't remember where they all were. All that mattered were the Emeralds, though.🤔

Those Stages are a pretty bad experience in otherwise-excellent games.

Do people really struggle with Blue Sphere stages? They're the easiest special stages in the series IMO. Just look at this bullshit:
You can't even tell where you are relative to the rings in later stages. And don't get me started on those spinning rooms from Sonic 1.

You know you're a true sonic autist when you try to A rank the levels.

I've never understood how any of the rankings even worked and only ever had good ranks in Generations.

I tried A-Ranking SA2, to unlock Green Hill. The save file got corrupted. I quit in disgust.

Anyway, the reward isn't worth it.
I actually got that far, out of boredom and the amount of muscle memory that it took is the reason why I hate half of the series, at this point.

Ranking systems are a stupid idea, anyway. You devote your time to playing a game and it has the audacity to say, "Well, you did okaaay... but I think you can do it better."

It's why I never cared for Hitman games.

"Hey you did everything silently but you didn't use the the single bag of ravioli to make your target slip down into the pit of lions. Sowwwwwy"

Mission Complete? Well, make sure to play again and kill everyone with a paperweight.

Killed everyone with a paperweight? Well, make sure to play it again and kill everyone with a brick while cupping your balls and singing "Ave Maria".

Blood Money is the reason I can't stand that song. It's a beautiful rendition and I know I'm the problem but for some reason that particular version cuts through me like a knife and now I can't stand it.

Anyway, here's a run of Metal Harbor that involves two(!) "Perfect" combos. In a Sonic level.
