"I bought the rights, not the liabilities" isn't a real thing and is exactly the argument Disney is using to not pay people who wrote under contract for Lucasfilm and Fox prior to their acquisition. Even they aren't going to be able to keep it up forever. Jeffrey doesn't have Disney's lawyers and it's ridiculous that he's even trying this.
Sort of. As I understand it, it is not a defense in Disney's case as they bought IP & trademarks. Or another way of putting it, Disney didn't renegotiate contacts with their writer stable, they moved the contracts over from Lucasfilm/Fox. The true reason it won't work for Disney is they are playing fuck-fuck games and if the authors are able to able to actually hold out long enoughfor their case to get to court, Disney is going to get disassembled in court. The dissambly will be peanuts on their balance sheet though, and whole thing is just a power game: What Disney wants is the authors to grovel to the mouse and in exchange for their checks, sign new contracts written through Disney legal, removing whatever small amounts of rights to their works the authors currently have. But Disney owns not just the works written by the authors, but all the IP & right to make derivative works.
None of that is the case when you write for a blog, least of all SA's front page.
In Jeffery's case he just got the front page content, and does not 'own' the IP of the authors; Lowtax didn't get a cut of the Golan the Insatiable money when that was made into an animatedseries, despite the character debuting on the front page (Just like Lowtax never lets it not be known he didn't get any slenderman dollars). I haven't seen the contract the writers sign with Lowtax, but a lot of bloggers don't even have exclusivity clauses for their clickbait articles - you're never going to make more with it then the $40 & .01 per 1000-clicks, so it'd be redundant, so who cares if you publish it on your personal blog as well. SA paid for the right to publish the content, but the author still owns the copyright.
tl;dr, The content & context is different and the liability likely still rests with SA, LLC.
Also, daily reminder that Hamas, you know the literal terrorist organization that murders children and has gone to actual open war with Israel, had a Mickey Mouse rip off for their children's TV channel that they killed off after being visited by Disney's legal team. Let that sink in.
