Honestly he's not wrong, dude. Goons have been self aggrandizing jackasses from day 1 and even though I used to post on SA I have to admit the quality was never as good as people tell you it was pre-06, 05, 04, etc. Even early days there were the GBS/FYAD superstars who were absolutely insufferable and thrived off the incestuous nature of those forums. Look at Euro, Big Peeler, Wilkins and really every FYAD poster that wasn't Corsair or Hocus. Constant circle jerks about in-jokes and the butt was always "Goons that aren't me"
 
I got in before the paywall existed, but around 02-03 I noticed everyone with an older account had either caught a ban and paid to rereg or just stopped posting. unless they were sucking off the GBS mods in every 3rd post

There's an old story about Punch, the English humour magazine from the 19th/20th centuries - someone once said to the editor "Punch isn't as funny as it used to be."

He replied - "It never was."

That sort of sums up SA as well.
 
Gonna drop something I also don't like from when Something Awful started to get ultra self righteous in going after other assholes on the internet while refusing to realize they weren't any better, and in many cases, worse.

Their TV Tropes bashing threads are a great microcosm of this.

They made some great points, they pointed out some legit sick fuckery, and believe me, I took a lot of notes on their more salient points so ATT wouldn't fall prey to the same sad state TV Tropes did. Credit where it's due, goons made a lot of good points about what a sickening hive of perversion and circlejerking autism TV Tropes was.

But the other side of the coin reared it's ugly head. They were actively trying to sabotage TV Tropes to get people pissed at them so they had more content. They were trying to ruin TV Tropes financially by weaponizing Google's trigger happy ad censors against them, and they happily employed cognitive dissonance over how they had their own fucked up shit going on in their own community.

In several places in the threads, they approached self awareness on this, only for this to be squelched so it wouldn't make them have to look in the mirror and realize they were in many ways mocking their own reflection in what they saw on TV Tropes.

Saddest of all would be seeing some of the people who oversaw that nonsense later be exposed as bigger deviants than the people they called out, and that's not including the ex-tropers who came in by the legion to trollshield.

This is one area the Kiwi Farms has improved on IMO. Something Awful eventually stopped doing these callout threads because of all the hypocritical shit I mentioned, not to mention it made them a bit too self reflective for comfort, and they couldn't stand it.

Here does a lot of what they did, but it has the self correcting grace that everyone who comes here admits they are autistic weirdos laughing at other autistic weirdos. Self reflection about one being a lolcow is encouraged so people don't become bigger lolcows in the process of mocking them, and if you fail to do this, you get thrown into the pit with the others who were getting mocked before you became no better.

The difference between TV Tropes and Something Awful is that TV Tropes banned its pedos and was given over to competent people.

Something Awful remains a haven for diddlers under the watchful eye of Mangosteen Man

That's one of the reasons I only ever really lurked. The troons are basically a protected class. As are certain minorities.

It's no fun getting probated because you didn't make sure the the goon you just ripped on wasn't a special snowflake of some sort.

They weren't initially. The first trans megathread was in Ask/Tell. It somehow turned into a "support" thread and it (along with the feminism megathread) got moved to e/n, where Abe was mod. Ever since then the trans threads have been protected. It now resides in TGRS hugbox, under the ever watchful eye of KM.

ZDR seems to have disappeared from the mod list on the main page.

Zen Death Robot, FactsAreUseless, and a number of other SA mods/admins belong to a clique of people who believe "oppressed" people can do no wrong. This demographic includes minorities, people with disabilities, and transgender people. Shmorky falls into the "trans" category because of all of his genderspecial bullshit and fugly Tumblr art. Thus, he's exempt from criticism even though he's an emotionally abusive babyfur who literally gets off by shitting in diapers and deserves absolutely everything that comes his way.
