My life got significantly better after I stopped going to SA. Goons are profoundly fucked up disgusting people that pollute other people with their neuroses. The incredibly interesting and funny stuff you can find on the SA forums does not outweigh the assorted mental illnesses and maladaptive behavior that dominate the site.
There are a nonzero number of people on the site that, as far as I can tell, spend more than forty hours a week posting long-winded diatribes about orthodox communism - last time I went there, earlier this year, one of the moderators was advancing a pro Kim Jong Un position, claiming that western media in its entirety was a series of lies aimed at deligitimizing communism.
The best example of mental illness on SA are the "troons". The typical situation is that a deeply depressed guy (read: a typical goon) happens onto the troon thread, posts a bit, and decides that the root problem in his life is that he was born as a man when he should be a woman - as opposed to his shitty financial situation, his issues with booze and/or drugs, his poor physical health, his difficulty in finding friends, the fact that he got bullied in school or his lack of success in dating. Troons cheer him on while he goes about turning his life from sad, but reparable, into into an outright disaster.
