do you still have a copy of life's battle, that christian game you reviewed that looks like a shitty atari 5200 game? i've been curious about it since i read your review on it waaaaaay back in the day but i can't find any info on it anywhere.

I think this went bad because it was a chance for some people to get to speak to lowtax for the first time ever. In some cases, there was a explosive decompression of sorts based on the fact that many people remember the hey day of SA and took it personally when Catladies destroyed one of the greatest humor sites on the net. Just look at all the spin off sites that came from SA. Some straight up trolled.

You guys really are doing gods work here. And I hope this is not the start of bad blood.

Ha, that's pretty funny. Guess they aren't all a bunch of thin skinned autists fags over there. It was kinda weird though how they went from upvoting me to jumping down my throat and white knighting Lowtax in the space of like 20 posts. Maybe half of them were just doing some 11th dimensional chess trolling as well.

I'm still not sure what I said that pissed them off. I barely 888'd, and suddenly like "OMG YOU'RE SO OBSESSED WITH SA!!1" :rolleyes:

For the record I don't have any beef with those guys. I know a lot of our people spend time there. When I first heard of the CWCwiki forums i thought "holy shit, those guys are a bunch of spergs" especially when I found out some people met on there and got married. But in the past year they've done a lot to reinvent themselves and diversify their topics and targets. I also respect their doxxing ability.

It's odd they would be so aggressively dickish towards us, because I think in the end we're 2 sides of the same coin, mocking shitshows online. Probably the most vocal of the Lowtax sycophants in that thread are former or current SA fanbois.

As far as I'm aware, SA's forums are running a very highly customized version of vBulletin 2.0 (4.0 was the last "forum only" release, and they are on 5.0 now). Radium did a ton of specialized work on the forums and they are very much a "scotch tape and bubble gum" situation. The forums cannot be conventionally updated using vBulletin's built-in tools because it will break almost everything. Likewise, I believe it would be difficult to export SA's database(s) and convert them into formats that would be compatible with modern-day equivalents.

edit: @Lowtax, are you familiar with the YouTube/Twitch show "Arcade Pit"? It's run by a guy from SA named Smite and is a live game show similar in vein to Nick Arcade. It seems to be pretty well received and features a lot of SA's greats from the Let's Play community (slowbeef, Diabetus, Psych Eyeball, Tie Tuesday, etc). [LINK] Stuff like this would be great to invest in community-wise if you haven't already. :)

Popular opinion is a fickle thing, and it's swayed back and forth over the course of the thread as it develops. Speaking for myself, I just appreciate honesty. I figure if you have a concern, better to get it out in the open so it can be discussed rather than harbor those feelings and just become bitter. You've otherwise been alright, if not a bit wordy.

I personally don't see our forums as being that different either, though I think maybe us Kiwis might be bigger softies.

... Well, some of us, anyway.

Radium's "Specialised Work" consisted of demonstrating Wu-tier coding ability, such as "saving space" in the database by changing credit card numbers from strings to integers, having the password "kjs500" on SA, and every other site on the internet, when your name is Kenneth J Stumpf, and various other toddler-grade errors. It's a wonder it still runs at all, and he's fucked the database schema so badly that there's apparently no easy way to migrate it without having a full time professional look at it properly, which probably costs more than is worth spending.

Ya don't worry about bad blood, it's just that whenever we have a 'community exchange' a bunch of people show up here and stick to one topic only and never really learn how not to paint a target on their backs here. Eventually they all discover the rest of the site and learn to fit in, or they wander back to where they came from, or they do neither and end up getting crucified, but in the meantime we do our best to protect them from the hungry hungry spergs who call it a 'raid' and want to get to doxing and ruining people as soon as possible.

You guys are fine and I'm sure the 'silent majority' will be totally welcomed here. There's no kiwi/sose friction or rivalry. It's just people like Doctor Jizzmopper who are clearly not fitting in and at great personal risk of becoming greenlit who should probably stay on SoSe or at the very least doublecheck to make absolutely sure that their personal details are a-grade 100% secure though, because I'm only willing to go so far to keep the hungry kiwis from a target they want to go after, and eventually I'll just have to step aside and say 'happy hunting'.

And that is exactly why I chose my first post on the farms to explain the passions involved here and to try to get a mutual respect and dialog going. Our sites really are alike in many ways, and the last thing we want is a rivalry.

I think dog is genuinely passionate about SA and he is also genuinely frustrated that what seems like simple logic to him about SA and its issues are dismissed with a one-liners by lowtax every time. Both in this thread and any other avenue of contact SA members have made over the years. But that is Lowtax's right. And people can bitch, but in the end it's his baby. And I respect that.

On topic, I will say there is some disillusionment going on. A lot of what was said about the admins and mods are true. We had first hand sources and screenshots of the mod forum from some unknown deep throat (lol). They have gone radio silent for well over a year so don't panic. And no, we did not go searching. They were inboxed directly to our old site owner. People (SA forum leads) really did take on the attitude that if there was radio silence from the owner, they would run it their way. It happens when you step away from the helm.

The key is just to accept that it is what it is, and move on. It is not going to change, and SA will go dodo bird when it stops covering it's own expenses. It was an amazing experience to witness. But it's time to start preparing for it not to be there. I really hope that is never the case.

And finally, I have much post regret that my first post here was related to drama. I never contributed here before and stayed in lurker mode, because I prescribe to the philosophy that, if I am not making a thread better, why make it worse. I will shit in my own house, but I won't shit in someone else's. I hope someday I can hide my shameful start enough to contribute here as well. But its time to go quiet as I know what this place is capable of, and I respect that completely, and I will never poke a potential beehive.

Again, you are doing God's work gentlemen. If you ever need collaboration, do not hesitate to PM one of us.

And Lowtax, there is nothing I can say to you that you have not already heard a million times. There is a ton of good advice out there. Just stop taking everything as a personal attack. Critism is also constructive. You are extremely talented at making people laugh, and I hope you find that spark again someday. I am also getting way too fucking old myself, and I have very little ones. My online presence has gone to almost zero production. I just came back to SS after a yeat away. I love being with my girls too much just like you. But I also don't make my living in entertaining people, so I get to breathe any time I want. So you have my feels there, goon sire.

The forum code and structure were fantastic back in the day but have you ever considered rebuilding them? Not saying that they have to be like here, but it's hard to deny that there are a lot of modern conveniences that Kiwifarms has that SomethingAwful lacks. As much as I love SA it does feel very dated compared to what a modern forum could have.

That's the issue I've been struggling with for years upon years. Around 60-70% of the code for our forums has been custom written, so it's unfortunately not as easy as just upgrading to the newest version of vB or whatever forum software is popular. All the custom code would have to be rewritten completely, and in a way that all the databases would be importable to the new software.

Perhaps I could try getting in touch with various forum software developers and see if they'd be willing to look at our current setup and code, and see if they could customize their software to include those features in exchange for advertising or something. It's just difficult because the forums have had custom code added to it / changed for nearly a decade now, so there's a lot of things both minor and major that would need to be rewritten.
