As far as I can tell Hellthread is just a gigantic shitposting garbage thread and Helldump is where the goons used to dox and ruin people's lives and drive them for suicide for fun. Right?

That's correct. Hellthread was supposed to be a containment thread for controversial topics, such as fat people and gamergate. Unfortunately, every hellthreader got a reputation as being a woman-hating gamergater aspie even though the most prominent posters were either fucktard antis or people just laughing at the whole ordeal or ignoring it entirely to hang out.
 
Hellthread was a quarantine for otherwise verboten topics. Gamergate, star citizen, day-z, gun control (?), a couple of others. For some unknown reason it really upset all the mods, which is weird because they created it. Probably cause it produced some of the only funny content in gbs for a long time.

Hellthread is where any "problematic" topic got trained. So basically Gamergate and Doobie's Doghouse. Helldump was an in-site version of SASS that basically chased out everyone fun and interesting*, leaving behind a bland, boring and shitty mass.

*And anyone conservative, and maybe one or two pedophiles.
 
Helldump started out fantastic, but they ran out of good targets really fast. Instead of stopping they just widened their focus, till they were calling out people for being conservative or just a noticeable poster.
