Was it a good take on the idea? At first blush that sounds like the exact kind of deconstructionist snarky scifi that hipsters like.
It was okay. "Snarky," as you said, self-referential, a few laughs. Oddly, I thought his first book, the one he self-published, Agent to the Stars, was actually funnier.
The first three Old Man's War books were pretty good space opera, the fourth one was an absolutely painful Mary-Sue trip, with a main character probably modeled after his daughter. Just couldn't continue the series after that.
He also has some weird fetish about publicly humiliating himself every once in a while. Typical of the male feminist, woke white male with scraggly beard type, I guess.
The poor doggo. FWIW, he and Vox Day had a passive aggressive sperg war between two internet tough guys a few years back. Sadly, neither seems to talk about the other any more. Probably ancient history at this point.
