But making OCs is supposed to be fun. I made up a new character not too long ago and I had fun with refining his personality and characteristics. It's the creative process of turning a simple idea into something more fleshed out and making changes over time as the character go through experiences and how they influence the story.
You look back at it in the future and see the changes your characters go through. From the initial concept sketch that gave you the lightbulb moment to the current iteration, seeing all of the style changes, putting your character through hardship to your dismay (maybe), seeing that idea that became oh so terrible that you retconned it and so on.
Making your own version of canon characters is fine. I've seen an interesting series of racebends of Disney princesses but that had good edits and representation took a back seat. If you feel the need to use canon characters as templates because you're too lazy to make up your own stuff, you're downright disrespecting the creators and fans of the character. Make up your own stuff or log off. Even if your ideas won't be that good, it's at least something you did on your own and that's the journey of character creation. My journey started with Mario and Pokémon rip-offs in 2004.
