I think one of the other problems with "sensible" redesigns is the style the piece as a whole is drawn in as well as the lackluster outfit design. A lot of the proportions are squat, "realistic," and stiff. Combined with the underwhelming outfits, they suck any sense of motion and life out of a character. There's no emotion in the posing and no dynamism to the proportions. These people seem to equate "stylization" with "sexualization" and can't grasp the fact that good character design doesn't necessarily mean realistic/practical character design.

I kind of like this Sailor Moon redesign because it's based off of British and Japanese Navel officer's uniforms from WW2. It's certainly not Usagi, but if there was a series about magical girl sailors from that time period, it would make sense (and I'd watch it!).

the strilonds are white in canon. making them black is just dumb and not progressive. if people really want to be progressive they should make their own characters. i hate this so much.

I’m on board with a Sailor Moon reimagining where they’re the artillery crew of a spaceship with Star Trek style away team missions.

It probably has to do with the outfits being unrealistic in actual combat. I’ve seen very little of Kill La Kill but it’s very over-the-top and in no way trying to be realistic.
