Why does Tumblr have an obsession with vitiligo?

  • Suicide Girl model and America's Next Top Model contestant have it, spread on Tumblr, that's why.

I can understand why Momo would need less clothes given her powers. But these redesigners refuse to acknowledge that.

Sometimes it makes me question the people who is doing the redesigns has even seen the show or read the book outside clips or snapshots but I be surprised if they did then at that point it is just straight up ignorance from their part.

The redesigned costumes themselves aren't too bad, but the artist's really missing the point of the original ones (most especially Mami and the placement of her soul gem -- crucial to a certain plot point in the series.)

The magical girls' costumes in Madoka Magica aren't exactly what I'd call scantily clad, but I guess any exposed skin other than the face is just too much for these artists.

If it was an AU with Musketeer-type warriors instead of magical girls, this wouldn't be a bad redesign.

They strip away any kind of individuality or uniqueness from a character and make them unbelievably unrecognizable, ugly or just plain bland and boring
which is strange because they are all such Unique butterflies.

I have an older post on this thread about why this type of thing doesn't work, so I won't say too much here, but how the hell do you miss the point about the Winx Club? They're Fairies! They're meant to look pretty and pixy-like and cute. That's the point. It's part of the appeal. They transform into that version of themselves and still kick-ass because they hold incredible power with their forms.

To even make this point even more clear, for some bg info, the fairies are guardians of their worlds with important positions as protectors. They don't really need all the armor because their power makes up for it. Sometimes a character needs armor, but once again, sometimes they don't.

Cool concept but the stereotypical meguca look is the frigging point. Reminds me of when PMMM was new and Tumblr would screech and circle jerk that it was exploitative torture porn, not feminist and sexualised the characters when 1) that’s the POINT, "how would magical girls cope in a non-idealistic setting" and 2)outside of the TV transformation scenes imo the show does a really good job of not including typical fanservice. In comparison, I welcome anyone to look up any female monster/villain design from Sailor Moon. Plus everybody ignored the fact Madoka’s fucking mum is a competent, confident and successful businesswoman while her dad is the happy househusband who is one of the only two male characters in the show, and both are totally unimportant. Fucking Dumblr.

We're just one step away from a dystopian future where everyone has no sliver of individuality.

I am really curious to see who uses these banners and see how they act in real life because it would be pretty funny contrast.

I don't know why people especially online have this mentality of thinking just because you dawn a pencil or pen and you draw /edit them it means you know how character design works I not saying you can't criticize it. But its just I feel a pompous vibe every time I see these redesigns especially ones that just cover the skin or change the skin tone it feels less like they thought it would be cool to do it and more like " I doing this because I know better than you" like the #respectful_redesign @Brit Crust pointed out. It makes me think they are doing this because ether they think showing skin = bad design no matter the context whether it is for purpose or personality or for other reasons. Overall I am not against the idea of trying to redesign a character I just think the way all of them go in this thread so far seems to come from ether spitefulness or with personal insecurity.

Bolded for emphasis, because I was thinking about this the other day. I sometimes do roll my eyes at really blatantly stupid/ridiculous fanservice-y designs, but if it makes sense for the character, then I don't mind it as much. Like, I'd take issue with giving a character like, say, Kitty Pryde from X-Men bikini skimpwear, simply because it's not in the character's character to walk around in basically a bra and panties. OTOH, I'd side eye someone if they tried to completely cover up Emma Frost, simply because it would be wholly out of character for her to essentially be clad in a niqab or burka. (People have tried to give her pants, at least, but it's rarely ever stuck for very long)

What bugs me about these types of people, is that they shut down any attempts to point out that some "sexy" designs are created and drawn by women. One famous example I like to point out is Vampirella: she was designed by Trina Robbins, an underground comix artist and 70's era feminist. Another is Bayonetta, and to say nothing of Sailor Moon in general. These "respectful_redesign" types can't wrap their brains around the fact that maybe, just maybe, a woman would create a sexy design as a power fantasy or simply because they find it aesthetically appealing, and they accuse the artist of having "internalized misogyny" or whatever crap buzzwords they use these days.

The first Stella (the blond) redesign has an ugly color scheme while the second one makes her look butch and have boy body. When she's a fashionista who is very feminine and loves beauty and looking pretty.

Also, did anyone else notice there were a lot of Russian artists participating in that hashtag? Maybe it's just me, but that seems a little odd.
Yes, my twitter feed is now full of these redesigns, maybe because twitter was more popular with Russian-speaking feminists than tumbler in the first place.
They also write and speak in fucking Runglish.

And as always, there's no regard to what the original medium for the character was, the role and behavior of the character. Take
this Betty Boop redesign - it would be undecipherable in an actual newspaper cartoon, this face expression is hard to read.

This reminds me of feminists from 2012 tumblr (as in drawing everyone as fat hairy ambiguously brown troons wasn't in vogue yet); Russian people are "behind" on the internet from what I've seen. MLP became popular in Russia years after nobody gave a fuck about the brony craze even to make fun of it anymore. Thanks to intersectionality, twitter SJWs will probably take offense to them for being transphobic or something, like Redkatherinee who got run off of Twitter recently.
