All these uglified OCs and canon characters make me wonder if it's a coping mechanism to counter the Suehunters of the past that criticized sexy badass characters who had everything fall in their laps.

Even if said Suehunters ended up behaving like angry critics.

The lewd artist is at least being honest about the art being for masturbation, rather than the complain artist, who is just stroking their own ego and sense of morality.

That's more than likely it. Because of the overly harsh critique in the "OC Community" you would see what we called "anti-sues" that were basically just young artists trying to run away from that scathing critique that shitty deviantart-tier writers with boring do-nothing no-fun-allowed normal-girl OCs were more than willing to dish out over the most minor perceived flaw. So...people made characters who fucked everything up and the whole world shat on them on the daily, and though they were usually still attractive, a million physical or mental problems.

Mentioning which, that may have been the beginning of the fetishization of mental illness on deviantart.

Tumblr has had a thing for the excessively ugly for probably 6 years now but the recent wave of oh god won't someone think of the children ( has denounced cringe culture which they erroneously believed was the source of OC nitpicking bullshit, so it opened up the doors for people to start making insanely overpowered perfect godlike OCs again and if you say "hey maybe this thing isn't so good and you should revise it?" it's harassment. Now you can't criticize anyone's characters at all The character is their baby, they're a minor, the characters are personal, they made them to cope, etc etc, a million reasons why you're not allowed to say jack shit about someone's OC. If you do you're going to get a callout post about how you're an abusive anti-SJW bigot.

Evening, Kiwis. I've been lurking the Farms and browsing threads that caught my interest while deciding if I should sign up or not (which I obviously did, ultimately).
Anyway, I'm here with a contribution of my own. Gazing upon the atrocities that this thread bears, I've come to grace said thread with some... Art. The person in question isn't really an SJW, but their artstyle is kinda... Tumblry? Like there's Tumblr nose and spots on the elbows? And something about it is really disturbing.
Maybe it's the eyes?

Forgot to mention but, christ. Those hands.

It’s got some mild tumblrcore traits, but it’s pretty easy on the eyes. Not horrifically ugly or anything

I shared it because the eyes being that far apart isn't appealing. They were trying to go for a semi-realism style it looks like and failed. If they artist used references or steadied anatomy more their style would become less uncanny looking. They did a good job drawing monolids but if the eyes are too far apart it makes the drawing look off.

Traits: The women must usually be of average appearance or lower. Though there is more bodily variety, femininity (unless its Sailor Moon) is usually downplayed. Weird noses and mouths.
Clothes: Armor should not show any hints that they have boobs. Stuff that shows cleavage, femininity (to a lesser extent) or sexuality are no-nos.
Exceptions: Sailor Moon (and the Scouts) are almost always the exception. Even if a cleavage-exposing, skimpier outfit (like Power Girl's boob-window) is in character, it doesn't matter and they'll link to some comic by Aaron Diaz.

A good example in Tumblr Art is the prominent feature it's a gross fetisization or stereotype of a minority, but there can be other factors like the message or style that flags attention.

More on topic and more "Art Critic" Val, comin' straight at you: Crippled legs, vitiligo, huge scars, albinism - these are all fun traits to draw in a character, but they should not form the basis of all your art or a character. MANY of these people rely on purely luck-of-the-draw afflictions, quirks or traits to make characters interesting. If the only defining trait is an quirk, sexuality or injury and no other substance to them they aren't really more then a prop piece; and if someone calls out this one dimensional character, they are simply called bigoted and wrong.

All these artists appealing a guilty complex or a cheap way to appear as sanctimonious as possible.
