that artist actually is on tumblr. it was only their first post so i ended up messaging them myself and told them not to worry about it. turns out they were shocked by the criticism. they told me there are some nice black people at their college (in china i guess) and they are just as respected. geez, dumblr. way to mistreat a random kind artist.

no no no, you're mistaken. i don't have tumblr account, i just was reading some parts of the threads and i've been knowing homestuck for at least one year. i've heard of those sjws few months ago because of how their usually ugly artstyle was infamous because of them. my arttistic senses were tigling.

From what I can gather, in Homestuck everyone is white.
Literal white.
There is no race.

People on tumblr are dead set on making everyone think dark skinned people are ugly as hell. I'm starting to get the feeling that these artists must actually be secret Russian agents sent there to covertly make us all racist by associating black people with these horrible drawings!

...jk but seriously, the last thing I think any time I see someone make a character darker-skinned is "wow, that looks so much better!" Not because the dark skin would even make the design worse but because they're so bad at drawing it and matching colors.

Ugh that green and magenta brown color look fucking hideous together. they clash so bad.
Also wouldn't having freckles everywhere makes the character a pain in the ass to animate? because you can't just change freckle arrangement every frame and expect it to look okay.
Also because her eyes are black and her skin is really dark i find it kind of hard to read her expressions and that's such an important character design element.

The color combination in the recolor is hard to look at. The hair is too bright and clashes with the skin so much that it gives me eye strain just trying to look at her face.

A woman doesn't owe you anything, not even readable facial expressions so you can tell how she feels. What are you, a sexist?

Also, giving her more features associated with specific races while claiming some of the intent of the redesign is to make her look more alien...

I didn’t even notice that she had larger lips till you pointed it out AND I had to turn the brightness almost all the way up on my phone to see what you’re talking about.

When you make the character’s skin too dark where you can’t even see the small details like that, you’re doing something wrong. Even the facial details are visible on the darkest of Steven Universe characters!
(Then again it just might be my phone shitty but I’m certain the majority of people in this thread wouldn’t have caught that at first glance. Especially if they didn’t zoom in all the way like I had to do.)

I read her Wikia article over, because I've always thought she had an interesting design and I wanted to know if any of the shit the "artist" added was actually relevant to her superpower. On a strictly aesthetic level, making her dark skinned with freckles would make her a pain to draw in the comics, and in the anime, especially when her eyes already have black sclera. She would literally be a black blob and completely constrast from (what I've seen to be) a bright cast and environment. Usually this sort of coloring would indicate a villainous character.

I know it's :autism: to delve deep into this sort of useless thing, but it bothers me after reading what Mina's power is.

Bioluminescence is for organisms that function in very dark environments, hence the majority of organisms with it are in the very deep sea. The basic use of this is for the organism to attract attention, whether it be for mating or simple communication. It also has little-to-no relation to acid. If you wanted to incorporate some form of light into her design, put some form of batteries - which operate based on acid - instead of something that looks cool. Giving her the ability to glow in the dark is useless.

I like that whoever edited this implies fangs and bigger horns = more alien. I know there's no set list of what can or cannot be alien, but it's a coincidence that those are "pretty" features. No H.R. Geiger style skull, no calloused/padded appendages, no extremely visible veins, etc. Just say you think they look cool like with the freckles.

The colors themselves look like the person confused "acid" with "acid blotter," I feel like I should be looking for Mickey Mouse or Bart Simpson somewhere
