What whitewashing is: changing the ethnicity of the character to what is commonly understood as "white"
What whitewashing isn't: changing the character's skin color to be lighter (since skin colors vary widely across races and ethnicities) while still keeping their original ethnicity intact. For instance, there's more to being "black" than just having dark brown skin.

It’s also people not understanding what lighting is. The Encanto art so many white saviors got mad over is obviously meant to be high exposure and high contrast. Everything in the color scheme invokes bright, cool lighting.

People like this will reference screenshots of a character in a dark room or a night scene and call painting their skin any lighter than that “white washing”.
