my first few years in college I would drunkenly take construction cones home. had a collection, but eventually had to leave them at an apartment. I miss my cones.

Using Tumblr, I copied the image URL into the first box on http://regex.info/exif.cgi and pressed "View Image At Url". What comes up is a fair chunk of information:

THE SERIAL NUMBER! So, if I were an investigator, I now have more than enough information to establish probable cause, subpoena Tumblr for the user's IP address, subpoena the ISP for the IP's registered user, and obtain a warrant to obtain the camera and shoplifted items. A prosecutor sees the serial number matches up with what you posted, and that's something that establishes your guilt whether or not you threw it all away in a panic. Getting the EXIF took me all of five minutes.

Some users on /pt/ even found people's names and GPS locations.

All good in theory, I just hope the police actually subpoena the ISP and tumblr. It's been my experience that police departments don't do that as often as they can and should.

If it does happen, though, it'll be beautiful.

I'm going to disagree about the GPS coordinates being shown on recent cameras. This was a big feature for nature photographers back in 2007-2008, but it's been phased out because no one really used it and it would take a bit of the battery life. For the most part, you either now have to buy specific cameras with it or an attachment that geotags your photos for you (and uses its own battery). Phones though, yeah. They already have GPS on them, so it doesn't take a whole lot more to geotag them. Like Katsu pointed out though, getting a serial number will be a lot more damning on all of these.
 
Is high-end makeup really that different from drug-store Maybelline? Or is it just some kind of status thing to be like "yeah I got that ulta lip gloss" or whatever?
