They've milked the Genesis beyond dry, would it kill them to do simple remasters of their Dreamcast games? Even straight ports would be acceptable in some cases (games they deem unworthy of the resources for more work).
Didn't a bunch of those already get ported to the Gamecube? I'd wager if it didn't sell Sonic numbers it wasn't worth digging up again.

Oh my God. SEGA's actually doing it....they're ACTUALLY DIPPING INTO THEIR DREAMCAST FRANCHISES! THERE IS A GO -

:o......

Of fucking course they had to fuck it up somehow....*sigh*

Crazy taxi, huh? Here are the two most recent entries:

Crazy Taxi City Rush[edit]

Crazy Taxi: City Rush was announced by Sega in March 2014 as a free-to-play mobile title for iOS and Android systems. City Rush is a mission-based runner similar in concept to Temple Run, where the player does not have direct control of the speed of the taxi but can use touch motions to swerve in traffic and make turns.[40]

Crazy Taxi Tycoon[edit]

Crazy Taxi Tycoon, previously known as Crazy Taxi Gazillionaire is another mobile spin-off game released in 2017 for iOS and Android. Unlike other games, this is a top-down endless business management simulator and idle clicker where players run a taxi business and hire drivers to defeat a ridesharing megacorporation called Prestige Mega Corp.

So it's nice to know they're going to further defile its corpse for the 20 year anniversary since the last proper title in the series.

Saturn would be nice too, but I guess that's difficult because they didn't archive stuff and/or the system is just hard to emulate.
They know there's interest in their 5/6th gen games, which is why they killed off the Sega Ages line (the best modern ports anyone could ask for), never brought them to Steam, then set to work on Unity remakes like Panzer Dragoon. I'd rather they went back to milking their arcade titles tbh.

It's a fucking crime the way SEGA treats anything saturn related, ESPECIALLY in the west. The Saturn has a bunch of amazing IPs to it's name like FIghting Vipers, Nights Into Dreams, Clockwork Night, Bug! Fighters Megamix. A few of them got ported to the PS2 as "Sega Ages" collections but ONLY in Japan. Not only that but Nights got done dirty. In the saturn version, you could do complete circles, making turning fun, but in the HD port on PC (which is based off of the PS2 version) his movement is gimped because he can only make "rounded square" motions

Interesting, considering Yuji Naka was protective as shit of Nights (or at least, the engine) back when Sonic X-treme was in development. STI got their hands on the engine and made a couple of tests with it until he found out and flipped his shit. He had it removed and it set back development again. It was pretty much his baby outside of Sonic (to the point it was pretty much spawned from ideas had and unused during Sonic).

Also that video you linked said the controls got patched on the Xbox 360 version of the game

There was also an elitist atmosphere within SEGA. The japanese branch would have the better tools to work with while the NA branch was always left to hang (Japan was blissfully working on Sonic Adventure while NA was killing themselves working on Sonic X-Treme).

Yuji Naka was just an arrogant fuck that thought his shit didn't stink just because he was "the father of Sonic". When SEGA NA was starting Sonic X-Treme he didn't offer any advice or help but just a simple "good luck", so either he knew the project was shit but didn't say anything or was pissed off that an american branch was handling a sonic game. Either way, it's pretty obvious that he WANTED america to fail.

Internal politics at SEGA is what lead to the mess they got themselves into in the mid/late 90's. When you have people like your art director who goes out of his way to train his team to actively HATE the designers and programmers, one wonders how the fuck SEGA got anything done in the first place.

Would Sega fans buy new Sega hardware? Would gamers generally? I wonder why Sega doesn't try getting back into consoles. It's been like a quarter century since their last release, and they're still a big name, I think their bombs are far enough in the past now.

Maybe a Dreamcast 2 would be too risky but Nintendo has no direct competition in the handheld space anymore, so Sega would probably do well with a Game Gear 2 if done well (especially if they swooped in now before a Switch 2, offering a next gen handheld first).

It wouldn't even be hard to get some launch games going. I don't see how it could fail with Persona 5 Portable, Sonic Mania 2, remaster some old games like Skies of Arcadia. Throw in a couple new IPs and 3rd party support, and it'd be something different, I think.

Would Sega fans buy new Sega hardware?
Here's the thing about their hardware...

Regarding the Sega Genesis, the technology was behind the Super Nintendo, but it took MASSIVELY talented people to use that "outdated" hardware to it's fullest potential whether it's making beautiful looking worlds, or creating fucking amazing music from the Yamaha chip. GameHut's YouTube Channel alone shows what he had to do with limited hardware to have Sonic 3D Blast do things no other game at that time did on the Sega Genesis.

By the time the Saturn and Dreamcast came along, they were basically trying to bring in an authentic arcade experience to people's homes (The hardware was on par with their arcade boards). However, by that time, SEGA went fucking mental and were making assinine decisions, such as using Hitachi for the Dreamcast's graphics rather than the standard 3DFX that most people were acustomed to (that decision turned off EA completely to where they decided to jump ship to SEGA's competitors). Nevermind the fact that people were sour with SEGA regarding how poorly they handled the international release of the Saturn.

Modern vidya these days is all about trying to push for this "realism" look and going for "4K Ultra Mindblowing ZOMG LOOK AT ALL THESE PIXELS Widescreen HD" settings that appeal graphics fags, which is part of the reason why vidya is so shit these days. Everyone is sucking EPIC's dick regarding UE5 even though it looks no different from UE4 or even what NVidia could do back in the day. SEGA in the 90's relied on their marketing to claim that they were the "cooler" system for edgier kids that wanted something more than what Nintendo had to offer. I honestly don't think they can pull off something like that anymore. SEGA would have to strictly rely on GOOD games to sell their system, and while they DO have a massive back-catalog to pull that off, it would help if they had some other popular 3rd parties to support them. The other problem would be the MASSIVELY talented people I mentioned earlier, which let's be real, are far and few in between these days. Because of this, and the batshit crazy decisions with SUPER strict deadlines they set for making games, SEGA has pretty much tarnished their good name outside of like maybe Yakuza? Even Sonic fans hate nu-Sega.

That wasn't why, EA didnt support dreamcast because they demanded a sports game monopoly on the system

“[Former Electronic Arts CEO] Larry Probst is a dear friend of mine. Larry came to me and said, ‘Bernie, we’ll do Dreamcast games, but we want sports exclusivity.’ I said, ‘You want to be on the system with no other third-party sports games?’

“I looked at him and said, ‘You know what? I’ll do it, but there’s one caveat here: I just bought a company called Visual Concepts for $10 million, so you’ll have to compete with them.’ Larry says, ‘No, you can’t even put them on the system.’ I said ‘Then Larry, you and I are not going to be partners on this system.'” – Bernie Stolar, Ex-SEGA America President and CEO

Sure, but it released in '88, SNES '90. It's common if a system releases later that it's stronger. Xbox released after the rest, and was the strongest on paper. PS3 released after 360, it was stronger. It's not a rule but it was often true (idk about these recent generations).

Yeah, their bad decisions were abundant, but I think that's ancient history at this point. I couldn't see them doing the same crazy shit again.

That's just the traditional home console/PC side of gaming though. Nintendo is doing well with its vastly outdated hardware and even more ancient ports with their handheld ("hybrid" but basically a handheld you can connect to a TV, like PSP).

It wouldn't take much tech wise to usurp them.

SEGA in the 90's relied on their marketing to claim that they were the "cooler" system for edgier kids that wanted something more than what Nintendo had to offer. I think they probably wouldn't even need to market that way anymore. If anything just play to nostalgia for marketing, and make sure the hardware and games are good so even zoomers want in for that reason.

They had a good relationship with some other 3rd parties, notably PlatinumGames; they could do another multi-game exclusivity contract with them.

That's pretty easy to turn around though. They could head hunt and buy smaller companies to get games out (especially ones with a strong history tied to Sega, like Treasure).

If they contracted Platinum again, bought Treasure, whipped up some Atlus goodies, launched with a solid Sonic game, and enticed 3rd parties, it could look really good. The games would speak for themselves.

I night expect just a Sonic Mania 2, but what if the mad lads did Sonic Adventure 3? Or both? Maybe I'm overestimating how much people like Atlus, Treasure, Sega, etc but I'd be in. Nintendo needs some competition anyway, they're getting lazier.

If anything just play to nostalgia for marketing
You mean that thing that every other company these days are doing now? That thing that's not just exclusive to vidya but to movies and tv shows as well?

I love the 90's as much as the next guy, but this "nostalgia" binge is getting stale and tiresome, especially when they keep fucking it up and ruining classic franchises everyone grew up with and loved.

If SEGA were the ONLY ones that were relying on nostalgia while everyone else was moving forward and doing their own thing, then I could see your point.
They could head hunt and buy smaller companies
Oh good, so become another Microsoft/EA/Sony/etc..., because that's what we need more of... bigger corporations shitting on the small guys.

Sega's situation is different so they could play the nostalgia angle more effectively. And to my knowledge Sony and Microsoft aren't really using nostalgia to peddle their console because they don't need to. In fact, Sony has even been pretty lackluster in even making old games available to play.

But I get what you're saying, and it's not like I think they should just go "hey guys, 'member Sega Genesis 'n stuff? Here's [product], please consoom." I just think they can make a good product that rivals Nintendo, market it first and foremost as a good system with good games that preferably brings something unique to the table, and just bolster that with the memberberries.

Oh good, so become another Microsoft/EA/Sony/etc..., because that's what we need more of... bigger corporations shitting on the small guys.
I don't think the world's going to end if Sega snatches up a few old partners to bolster their lineup. Sega isn't big enough to go around buying tons of companies even if they wanted to, so it's not a real concern.

I don't want to buy another toy. Gabe Newell should buy Nintendo, then put all Sega games on Steam Deck but with a 3D screen.
Didn't you just buy another toy though? Lol

Sega identity is too messed up to even carry a video game system nowadays, until the end of the Genesis era they manage to keep the "Arcade guys" identity with a sprinkle of "Tubular" thanks to the american branch.

Then came the Saturn and their mostly experimental games like "Clockwork Nights", "Sakura Wars", "Virtuas" and "Panzer Dragoons"games didn't fit well with their well stablished "Streets of rages" , "Sonics" , "Vectormans" and "Golden Axes", leading to massive discrepancy between audiences.

Then came the Dreamcast and the focus shifted again to very few experimental and expensive projects like Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue and Space Channel 5s that manage to kill their entire consol efforts for good.

Right after the dead of Dreamcast they completely splitted their identities between the "casual" Gamecube , the "hardcore " Playstation 2 and the "middle man" Xbox . This was also the era they start going full retard, between making the Phantasy Star Online to the consol with almost no internet connection and charging an extra fee to the one with paid internet connection, turning the Tactical Rpg Shining franchise into an action RPG series and OW THE EDGE followed by 06, literally their best game releases at the time happened because of two non consequential acquisition , since them both franchises got the golden boy treatment compared to almost every stablished long running Sega franchise since the 16 bits era.

By the turn of the decade Sonic was saved because of Colors, Generations and Racing spin-offs, their new IP Yakuza was already suffering with sequel fatigue, Virtua Fighter was completely ditched and Sakura was replaced for Valkyria.

Early 2010s Phantasy Star Online 2 and Atlus acquisition happens leading to a safe zone after a Colonial disgrace and at the same time they kill the Shining franchise for good.

Middle 2010's Sonic was suffering with identity crisis thanks to Sega betting on a meme, Yakuza was saved because of the 80s and Persona filed their pockets thanks to zoomer weebs.

From 2017 onwards everything goes off the charts, Sonic manages to return just to die on the same year, Dawn of war 3 is a massive dump, Puyo Puyo gets international releases and bait more zoomer weebs, Valkyria comes back just to fuck off, Sakura goes musou, Yakuza goes JRPG, we get a Streets of Rage 4 for a Shemue 3 and Total War goes downhill in favor of fantasy.

Sega identity is just too schizophrenic to carry an actual video game system nowadays, that stupid Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed character roster is basically the embodiment of all their mind boggling decisions over the years.

Irrc the yakuza series was basically a failure in the west due to a lack of marketing, the infamous dub of 1, and biggest of all muh GTA clone heck wasnt one of the reasons 0 was a sucess was because it released during the ps4 lack of jrpgs

Because Nintendo has bowed out of the console market and SOYNY doesn't count, I think there could be room in the market for a true blue Japanese console.

Stuff like Elden Ring shows there's a market for Japanese games, get all the big boys to make exclusives, make it weeb friendly and free of censorship, yeah, it just might work.
