Higurashi has a lot of console arcs outside of the main eight chapters, and I think at least one of these scenarios was adopted by one of the alternative chapters which were essentially alternative scenarios for them. Even Umineko has a 9th chapter, and a lot of extra stuff people aren't aware of unless they're really geeky fans.

I remember being really disappointed / annoyed at the fact that the character meant to be the successor for a character I actually really liked was so ugly and weird. Especially considering how cool and handsome Tomitake was.
