Keiichi is the more interesting murderer, Rika is the actual main character
No clue how you only get "more interesting murderer" from keiichi. He's literally the protagonist/main character for a good chunk of the various parts. Even when the rika shit is revealed and becomes the plot focus it still goes to his perspective sometimes. He's also one of the first to become aware of the timeloop shit everyone's trapped in other than rika who's the one more or less responsible for said loop shit to some degree. i guess you could count him actually having actual reasons for the murder as interesting but thats like almost every character that does the murder though shion is a special case where she descends into the delusion of actually being her sister after realizing she seriously fucked up and accidentally killed grandma.

Rena used to be on all the marketing and box art shit so I'm guessing that's why it's how it is.
Honestly with all the rikaxsatoko lesbo torture fanfic wank type shit and the recent appeal to that in officially licensed stuff I'm surprised they didn't just make it both of them or something. Rena being there is a sign not all is lost, a small miracle in the darkness of constant milking, maybe.

I just wanted to enjoy a fun thing about timeloops, crime, and the power of friendship but apparently some extremely vocal degenerates REALLY want to see timelooper 11 year olds doing BDSM murder shit to each other because "muh wholsome lesbians!!" but that's just how it is.

I'm slowly beginning to understand the friend that's been streaming this to me and some other guys initially for my reaction and to show me the cool plot has tired of that as the sessions the last few weeks have been 1 hour instead of a few hours till we're all tired or have to do some other shit and slowly beginning to understand aspects of him i didn't initially as he keeps trying to act like I'm fucking stupid or don't get things. Basic plot shit thats hinted at that I'm like "hmm yeah could be that but no telling yet till it happens" while also twisting shit like genuine concern for others being showcased as "OH YOU THINK THEY"RE JUST FRIENDS HUUUUH WOULD JUST FRIENDS SAY THISSS?!" While rika's freaking out over satoko getting fucking kidnapped by teppei knowing where that leads and everyone else basically having the same level of reaction to the news after finding out he was doing this, completely ignoring everyone elses equally intense reactions to the thing happening. Fuck man rika literally just gives up after that. Keiichi and Shion start doing the "murder contemplation 1500 seconds" shit before keiichi stops shion from doing the same thing he did in the previous thing cause he knows exactly what can and will go wrong there. Does that mean they all want to fuck satoko? no it means they genuinely fucking care about their friend romance or no and all of them have their own way of reacting to the fucking revalation satoko's gotten yoinked. At this point despite his wishes about me not looking at anything about the thing at all I genuinely have lost interest in following that decree. Honestly, the true fact is I lost interest in that quite some time ago. I'm not actively looking up spoilers, but when shit glances my eyes about the shit sequels I do not give a damn. Higurashi is so far the only thing he seems to be like this about, which is interesting but also extremely concerning. Not the spoilers thing, but the weird shift to dissinterest other than shitting on me sometimes and acting like I don't get obvious shit/twisting reactions thing. Maybe he's just going through a moody phase, maybe he's being corrupted by some unknown demonic party off my radar, it doesn't matter at the end of the day. What matters is I hopefully finish this thing before this year ends as the way he's handling it is getting stretchier than old webcomic update schedules. The fact of the matter is we've been in what I'm assuming is the first half of the endgame or the first half of the first part of the endgame for a few months now due to him just bailing at the 40 minute mark to do some other shit despite literally setting up a specific time on a specific day during the week to get it done in a timely manner.

bonus weird shit though Hanyuu literally just like showed upas a person in some random ass fucking incredibly mundane dream I had like the day before the guy streamed the chapter she shows up in a few months back. It was entirely coincidence albeit a kinda freaky one. Literally knew jack shit about her but somehow the dream one was completely on the money characterization wise despite me literally knowing jack shit about her save for the fact that she's a character that appears on a lot of merch and is related to rika. Wasn't even giving her existance much thoght as she hadn't even shown up yet at the time.

Pretty much confirmed.

Kind of sad really, I think Rika would have been a better pick of character, Imagine if she could HDD (Transformation basically) into a Bernkastel'ish Mascot with completely different magic attacks, would have been far more fitting.
I've never played these games but some friends I know have and are really into them so I know some shit via cultural osmosis. This is a pretty cool character design for a "not rena" rena character.
This is an rpg series, right? They better have one of her attacks involve summoning royalty free colonel sanders lmao.

The difference being she won't be actually called Rena ingame, but will more than likely have several nods towards the When They Cry franchise and Rena's character traits.
Other examples include "Falcom" , "Nitroplus" and even a character literally called "God Eater", all of them being characters that are supposed to represent franchises\companies but none of them being original characters from said franchises.
Sure, but those franchises generally don't use an existing mascot that's basically an existing character already. Higurashi-chan is inevitably just going to be Rena by another name, to the point where they just use Rena's voice actor, and as we said already, it's inevitably going to be the shallowest interpretation of her.
It's just a really lazy take on the franchise, really.

Rena used to be on all the marketing and box art shit so I'm guessing that's why it's how it is.
Yeah, Rena's the de facto mascot/face of Higurashi due to that, and given her weapon of choice is a meat cleaver, it's no wonder she'd be chosen for what I think is somewhat a fighting game.

Even though Higurashi already has a fighting game in Higurashi Daybreak.

I was just going over a couple of notable aspects of Higurashi and associating them with characters that executed it in a much better way than the story did with Rena. Though that is at least in part due to how hard Tsumi shit the bed in the second part, with all the retarded conspiracy shit. I wasn't really trying to do a deep analysis of how well Higurashi executes its story, just looking at how the "murderer" aspect is way more interesting with Keiichi in Onikakushi and especially Tatarigoroshi.
Shion never ends up deluding herself into being Mion, though. She just reasserts her original identity as "Mion" after she spent most of her life being forced to take on the "Shion" identity after the Sonozaki ended up putting the successor tattoo on the wrong twin. She also knocked out Oryou with her taser in order to torture her for information, and is only upset over her death because it means the old bat went to her grave before she could be forced to spill everything she knew about Satoshi's disappearance. It's only Mion in Wataakashi who ends up legitimately upset that she accidentally killed Oryou.
DEEN ended up cutting out the whole twin switch aspect that's so important to the twins' backstory, and it really screwed over their characters.

The ironic paperwork mixup as a baby doesn't mean she's actually Mion, it more or less just means the kid initially intended to be named one thing was the other one. At the end of the day, the name isn't what matters, what matters is the person behind the name and their actions
Her reasoning for claiming to be "the real Mion" was that they faked being each other to prank their parents when they were little to avoid responsibility and despite Mion having the tattoo since babbyhood which was the way people could easily tell them apart barely anyone ever checked that shit. Despite very blatantly not having the tattoo she ended up deluding herself into believing she was Mion after getting a complex about shit and wigging out about accidentally murdering her grandma who was from what she believed behind the whole supposed mafia scheme, filling both the role of herself and her sister as the real Mion was locked up in the yakuza torture dungeon. This also retroactively explains why mion starts acting sus and out of character in the second part, while in the first part it was keiichi taking shit out of context and freaking the fuck out. Shion literally remembers the events of he downward spiral that led to her murdering everyone via a freaky dream she has so until I see evidence of the baby name mixup being anything other than an ironic twist none of the characters knew about I'm still going to call Shion Shion.

The tattoo didn't happen when they were babies and they didnt get mixed up as babies either. The heir gets dragged off to the ritual where they get the tattoo by surprise at like 12-13 iirc. Mion and Shion were doing the thing where they pretend to be each other and the adults grabbed "Mion" who was actually Shion and gave her the tattoo. "Shion" at the time Keiichi arrives was supposed to be the heir.

Weird I remember it as being a baby paperwork mixup when I read through the thing. I'd ask the guy thats been streaming it to me via screenshare to go back to that part so I can double check it but yeah he's probably not going to given the trajectory he's on. No clue what he's been doing every time we drop out early or why it has to be specifically one day a week instead of 2 days when he's got pretty much nothing to do at night for the most part. Who knows maybe he's becoming a coomer for torture porn or something fucked like that I have no clue.

So basically what You're telling me is the mion in higurashi IS actually shion and Shion IS mion but they go by each others names despite having completely fucking different personalities and all the marketing lists Mion as Shion and Shion as Mion? Shit.

Yes. The whole reason the tattoo mixup happened is they got good at pretending to be the other and are identical twins

at like 12-13 iirc
I'm pretty sure it was significantly earlier than that, but yeah, it at least happened after Mion and Shion were at least aware of their own identities.
Honestly, it's kind of annoying that we never get a hard date on when it happened, since it makes it impossible to tell if say, Mion in Himatsubushi was Mion (Mion), or Mion (Shion). I'm guessing it happened some time before the Dam War ended, since that's when "Mion" was taken to live with Oryou in Hinamizawa to be trained towards the successor position, rather than living with their parents in Okinomiya, and obviously Shion (Mion) never knew Satoshi and Satoko, who probably went on to attend the Hinamizawa Branch School since its founding somewhere in the midst of the Dam War, but that's all circumstantial. There's no hard confirmation of anything.

Yes. The whole reason the tattoo mixup happened is they got good at pretending to be the other and are identical twins
thing is they're shit at pretending to be the other aside from visually being identical and it's why mion is out of character in the second part. What gets me questioning about this whole thing is that factor. There's no way they were conveniently good at being shit at being good at pretending to be each other. When Shion, who's apperently Mion, despite being called Shion through the entire thing, was pretending to be Mion for the yakuza under her it's made extremely clear how she's not cut out for that kind of shit. When Mion's friend group is even like is like "ok hold up this isn't mion who in the fuck is this" during her "Pose as Mion" downward spiral and constant fuckups with that. It kind of mirrors keiichi's downaward spiral in a sesne but instead of uh "oh shit are my friends out to kill me? OH FUCK THEY ARE ARENT THEY" It's "Oh shit there's a yakuza conspiracy! They made the dude I was attracted to dissapear and are GONNA COME FOR ME NEXT EVEN THOUGH I'M FAMILY!" In Keiichi'scase it leads to him beating his friends to death ad clawing his throat out like he got injected with the meth and with Shion it ends with her killing satoko, shanking keiichi, then tripping and fucking dying on the sneak trip back. I thought they were gonna like explain her crawling out from under keiichis hospital bed still alive but bloodied but nah apperently that's just "hyper-realistic hallucination that sneaks in when the rooms empty and nails your fucking hands with a hammer yakuza style till you die of shock when it seems everything gonna end alright beforehand"

You can actually see the Meakashi arc in YouTube; there's a guy that posted the whole arc there. I don't remember specifically where, but Shion (during one of her meltdowns after capturing Mion) accuses Mion of stealing the name "Mion" from her because she lost her position due to that tatoo (supposedly Mion wanted to try out some kind of food and asked Shion to switch with her, and that's when they accidentally grabbed Mion).

At the end of the day, the name isn't what matters, what matters is the person behind the name and their actions
The name matters though, because it plays an important role in Meakashi; it's the reason Shion resents her sister so much (because she had her privileges taken from her and was forced to attend a school she doesn't like) and why she's so obsessed with taking "Mion" from her.

Mion in Himatsubushi was Mion (Mion), or Mion (Shion). I'm guessing it happened some time before the Dam War ended
Judging from Mion's reaction to thinking Ooishi told Keiichi stuff in Onikakushi-hen, that could've been either her or Shion in disguise, but both of them don't take to Ooishi kindly, Mion since the Dam War and Shion since Satoshi's disappearance.

But I could've sworn they were anywhere from eight to ten when the tattoo was administered, so it was before the Dam War.

then tripping and fucking dying on the sneak trip back
She fell from the balcony trying to get back to her room, but she chose to roll herself off the veranda to her death.

Keiichi was freaked out by Ooishi's explanation of Takano's corpse being 24 hours deceased when found, so the stress triggered Hinamizawa Syndrome and he imagined the possessed body of "Mion" coming back to kill him which caused a heart attack. He first attempted to strike a conversation with her, though, as he watched her slowly crawl out from under the bed.

Outside of revealing the twin-switch-a-roo, Meakashi-hen also revealed that Rika was in the know about it which is why she was killed 'cause she was found in the well with a syringe in her pocket. This was omitted from the anime, though.

The meltdown explanation thing was pure fucking delusion shit as Mion was like "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT?"
When i was bringing up the baby name thing I was talking about like this weird brief snippet at the end or like a tip unlocked after the end I can't remember the details at the moment. That moment with the "Give mion back" shit was like when shion legit went off the deep end.

You're probably thinking of the TIP were Ooishi learns about the switcharoo at the end, but nowhere does that claim they were babies at the time. Yeah, it was around the point where Shion really started to lose it, but Mion never denied it happening, and Hanyuu further confirmed it during Saikoroshi where she explains that the differences for the twins are rooted in how the actual oldest twin ended up with the tattoo in that world. The only part that's truly delusional on Shion (Mion)'s part is claiming that Mion (Shion) did it on purpose.

This conversation is interesting because there was something about Shion’s backstory that didn’t make sense to me regarding her switching with Mion.

In the visual novel, the scene where she has Mion in the cage and she’s going ballistic had me interpreting the scene as Shion was so delusional she was convinced she had switched places with Mion and demanded she give the name back because otherwise it didn’t make sense.

In her backstory, she was the twin that was going to be strangled by Oryou (as it was tradition of twins were born, one would have to die) but her family pushed to keep her alive. Thus leading Shion to having a miserable life.

If her and Mion switching is true, and she was always the real Mion, then why was she treated like shit still by her family after letting her live.
She would’ve had it easier and Mion would’ve been the one who suffered.

The manga made this backstory more concrete but in the game, the switch-a-roo felt left to interpretation. At least that’s how I was reading it (then again I read the entire thing in one sitting and I was exhausted by the end), it just doesn’t make sense to me with what I felt were inconsistencies about Shion’s past.

I always thought Shion was being dramatic when she speaks about her family. The only one she doesn't get along with is Oryou, and even so it's probably because she makes things difficult for her (because she always causes problems and sneaks out of St. Lucia). We see that she gets along with Kasai, Akane, Kimiyoshi and the owner of Angel Mort (who's associated with the Sonozakis, Ii forgot his name) who helps her in staying quiet and even lets her work there.

Most likely because that's what most people think about when they think "Higurashi When They Cry", even if they never watched the anime or read the novel, she's pretty much instantly recognizable for all the wrong reasons.

I apologize for my Wife, Featherine's actions. I will make sure to banish her from the other franchises before she ruins those too in a fit of bored autism.

Higurashi no Naku Koro no Mei gacha game has new skins for Shion and Satoko:

They were available from January 15th to January 21st, if those are interested.

God damn stop it with uwu wholesome Teppei! It's not fucking cute!
It's so weird to me how a guy the source material goes out of it's way to show you is an irredeemable scum of the earth prick that deserves everything that comes to him and literally fucking does not care if even people close to him are killed but now he's being framed as "HAHA WACKY INITIALLY MISUNDERSTOOD UNCLE HEHE!" Like if it was a full reboot instead of taking place in the same universe I'd understand the weird toning down of him but like yeah that's not what this is this is supposed to be the same dude that literally fucking beat the shit out of his niece and nephew literally viewing them as nothing more than "pets". A guy that fucking doesnt care even if his equally shitbag wife died and showed no reluctance of sending people to fucking kill his gf he scammed people with when she ran off with the money yeah OK fuck you.
