The curse is eventually going to scale up well beyond the original, so that's different, at least, but yeah, there's some serious issues with Rika not knowing anything about it. You'd think she'd be one of the first people to be informed.
I don't think the true nature of the curse ever became public knowledge, though. Irie told Ooishi about it afterwards, but all those cases were closed already, and Ooishi was only insistent on continuing the investigation by himself for personal reasons. Once the killings stopped, people probably just let things be, especially when you consider that nobody in the know would want to open a new case against Satoko and Satoshi.

Convenient ancient magical Furude heirlooms have been a thing for a long time, but most of those only show up in the gag arcs, with the only ones that show up in the main story being the Onigari-no-ryuuou and the Kamu no Mikotonori, but the latter was explicitly almost depleted by the time of Saikoroshi, and part of the premise of that arc was that Rika could no longer loop due to Hanyuu being unable to reach her. If there was an artifact that could handle the looping instead, that story wouldn't have worked.

Personally, I don't think that Keiichi picking either Mion or Rena, or even a surprising candidate like Satoko or Rika would've really pissed people off all that much. Disappoint them that their ship didn't come true, maybe, but they probably would've accepted the end result since at least there was buildup for it in the original. It'd feel like a believable result and a step up from the wishy-washy shit in all other materials. Him marrying to some random is just about the only way to really piss people off.
 
So how is Ciconia? I like to think that he can churn out something decent when he gets a fresh start.

About 20% of Ciconia is potentially interesting.
Unfortunately, it's the part with the adults, and the Gauntlet Knights are super fucking boring until the actual plot kicks in like two-thirds through when Comrade Mario returns dignity to the planet, then they're kinda okay, but I was well past the point of caring by then.
The worst part is probably that the Data Fragments could've salvaged the AOU crew, at least, as they're pretty enjoyable and flesh out the cast, but since the Data Fragments are only unlocked at the end instead of being spread around the story like Higurashi's TIPS, they come too late for them to matter.

It's all setup until the last 25% of it which is interesting.
 
Rika offers Satoko her help, but so does the girl who lied to Satoko, so now Satoko wants nothing to do with Rika's new friends. Satoko studies her ass off for months and one day marches into the salon and chews out Rika and her new friends. Rika tells Satoko to knock it off, causing Satoko to run off. The new girls then diss Satoko, which makes Rika tell them to knock it off.
In March 1988, Satoko is told she's being fully transferred to the remedial class, but she has the potential to return to normal classes if she keeps working hard. While returning to her studies, Satoko starts crying and comes up with a trap that she hopes will remind Rika of the good old days. Unfortunately, it ends up injuring Rika, so Satoko runs away crying while tears roll down the lying girl's face.
I actually liked this chapter more than Oniokoshi and Hoshiwatashi. I swear Kihiro said "Uso da!" more times in Hoshiwatashi's first chapter than Rena did in the entire series, including gag arcs.

So if Higurashi is just going down the route of "canon" fanfiction at this point, might as well throw my hat into the ring and propose a fanfic idea I've had for almost a decade now but have been too lazy to actually write out. Only ever did the prologue to set the mood and never returned to it.

She couldn't stop running, doing so would result in her death. As much as her calves and lungs burned from being pushed to their limits, her survival instincts had the controls.

Rena stumbled past thick bushes and hanging branches the further she advanced into the forest. She would yank herself free every time her clothes were caught, the force ripping the fine fabrics apart. Some distance back, she had kicked off her heels, so her stockings were quickly wearing out. Her hair had previously been up, but was now unruly and fresh blood clumped it to her head and face. From behind, she was sure she could hear the hacking away of tree limbs, thus constantly reminding her her pursuer was armed. Every now and then, she'd scoop up rocks and chuck them behind her, not once hearing the sound of impact.

Her foot caught on a root, and she let out a yell tumbling down the hill. A precious second of sprinting now lost, she could only scurry backward and gasp at the figure emerging from over the mound. She vainly tried throwing rocks at the person once again, but as her fingers were trembling, her aim was off. “Go away!” she shrieked, eyes wide with fear. She found herself cornered against a tree trunk. “What do you want?!”

The shadowed figure stayed silent, and only continued to stride forward. The glint of moonlight off the blade of the cleaver—her cleaver—nearly blinded her. Curling up, she embraced for the end, hearing the footsteps come to a halt just in front of her. Whimpering, she slowly glanced up, hardly able to see the eyes hidden in shadow. Her heart thumped loudly against her rib cage, threatening to burst. Closer inspection showed there was something familiar about how they gazed upon her with malice, and yet...

Noticing the attacker hadn't once made a move for her, Rena dared to speak, despite her throat seizing up. “Why... wh-why are you doing this?” She shook her head and attempted to breathe again. “What have I done to you?”

There was a blink from the figure and the fist clenching the weapon tightened its hold to the point it started to shake. Then, like the hum of cicadas, the person calmly answered, “You did nothing. It was just meant to be.”

Without another word, the woman horrifically watched as the hand raised the cleaver and swung it down. The blade split apart her skull with a sickening crack and splatter of blood, sinking in deeply so it got stuck. There was a choked gurgle from Rena's throat interpreted as a scream, a twitch of the body as her eyeballs bulged from their sockets, and then she stiffened upon giving up the ghost. The person waited a minute longer for the light to fade from sight before slowly letting go of the handle. Blinking down at the drooling corpse slumped against the trunk, the violet eyes inspected the damage before averting their gaze, almost in disgust.

“It was always meant to be.”

R&R nano desu.

Later I'll recommend other fics, I just have to reread them since it's been years and I don't entirely remember why it is I fav'd them.

I still hate the fact that everyone ended up with rando's yet somehow, they still have gatherings in Hinamizawa without their Husbands\Wife, but they bring the children along because you gotta introduce the new cast somehow.

It just feels so forced and fake, I'm not feeling it.

Other than that, I'm still trying my best to judge it for what it is, so far it's not really grabbing me like the original series, the characters seem overly naive for it to be set in 2019, but at the same time there young teenagers so it is what it is.

Yeah, it's just straight-up "roribitsu" (ロリビッ) in the original. I'm glad that the translators are willing to keep it intact, though I'm not sure if she should really be considered a "loli" as she's only supposed to be a year younger than Keitarou.

That's not entirely true, since Mr. Kimiyoshi gets to hang out with them.
He's pretty blatantly telegraphed as the only spouse who is going to matter, him being both an important member of the Three Families (though with Rika being abroad most of the time and not having any children, it should really just be two families now), as well as apparently being a powerful businessman in Okinomiya, by which I can only assume that the Sonozaki's influence dwindled after the economic crash.
 
I'd have written Rena's son to be a serious guy that fucking hates shit that reminds him of his mother, like the fake ditziness, the happy-all-the-time facade, all that shit.

It'd have made Rena becoming a single mother something with meaning.
 
Lemme tell ya, there's nothing funnier than going back to episode 16 (the gore episode) and watching the whole thing with the knowledge Satoko's doing it because she hates studying.
It's honestly the funniest fucking thing. The most retarded shit.
 
The anime writers' insistence on bringing up the studying and nothing but the studying in the last two episodes was just such a baffling decision, when it should've just been a symptom of the issue, rather than the main problem itself.
It should've been about the entire school environment at St. Lucia, and how much it conflicts with Satoko's nature, as well as Rika's overly passive attitude and ignorance to Satoko's struggles, with Satoko feeling like she's the only one of them actually putting in effort to make things work (with the endless studying), with Rika not being willing to compromise at all, thus convincing Satoko that Rika only cares about herself, and forces Satoko to go along with her.
And after watching Rika's loops (going in with a really negative mindset already), the sentiment should've been about Rika basically having been lying to her for all her life, as well as seeing her spend most of those hundred years just sitting back and watching all her friends destroy themselves over and over without trying to do anything to help them, and occasionally even mocking them for their efforts, until those friends basically solve their problems by themselves, somehow. If you look at Rika's life from the outside, without getting insight into her thoughts, it's easy to view her as extremely unsympathetic, especially when you see things like her excitement at '82's Watanagashi festival while she knows that Satoko is about to lose her brother, while Rika is the only one who benefits since it means Satoko moving in with her.

The funniest part is probably that the current Mei event takes place at St. Lucia again, except here Satoko's grades are actually okay, since Rika actually goes out of her way to support her, and she also met some new girl who helped her change her approach when it comes to her studies, which allowed her to actually improve instead of just bashing her head against the wall that is St. Lucia's academic approach. Part of this involved her explaining to Satoko that she does have the proper fundamentals, but she misapplies them and uses the wrong tools for the job at and, which really sums up the anime as a whole. All the ingredients for a decent-to-good show were present, but the writing staff's inability to actually use them properly doomed the show to become a complete mess that completely failed to accomplish any of the goals it set out to achieve. The showrunners legitimately didn't understand Higurashi or its characters, even though it's really not a complicated work, and that automatically doomed it to become a shitshow, as When They Cry is just cursed to never have a good anime, no matter which shape it takes.

How the hell did Rika know about Tokyo's backstory?

Never mind the military and political sperging about post-war Japan that felt like nothing more than padding (which is why I can totally see why it was the anime and manga adaptations cut that fluff out), just how did Rika know all about that when it was supposed to be a secret? No way it was a change of narrator, too, it was clearly Rika telling the gang the story about Hinamizawa Syndrome and why Tokyo wanted to use it to take over the world without America's knowledge.

Just felt unnecessary, really.

Rika got in pretty deep with the research, especially after Takano killed her parents, since she felt that one of the benefits to it would be that they could tie Rika more strongly to them, and since Rika was generally extremely cooperative and already knew about the parasite going in, since they already explained its nature to Rika's father to get him on board. I don't think it's completely unreasonable that Rika would be told a fair bit about Tokyo, especially when characters like Irie and Tomitake are obviously more friendly and casual than most. Takano is really the only one who would insist on keeping as many secrets as possible, really.
