I hardly remember the previous seasons because it's been so long but the hunter license thing doesn't feel that out of left field to me. They had touch screen mission boards as far back as volume 2 or 3 and I vaguely remember Qrow trying to contact old friends through a network which hinted at some form of regulation.

The ugly Maya CGI reaction faces need to go. If they want humour in the setting they're pushing to be darker, black comedy/dry humour would work better.

The drunk strawmen getting their shit non-lethally kicked in felt a bit desperate.

Ass-OPs doesn't come across as a villain team to me, more like a B team. Tbh they all look ugly and forgettable, they might be those guys who exist only to be killed later to prove how high the stakes are, and frankly my first thoughts upon seeing them was "I hope this doesn't turn out like Bleach where they're churning out designs because they don't know what to do with the story. At least Bleach designs were cool".

People continue to never recognize Weiss even though she's 100% a Schnee and the fucking logo is on there, large and unconcealed, on her back. I think everyone just forgot about this because it's a good design that blends in with the rest of her clothing, but it's RT's responsibility to keep those details in check. I'm absolutely going to notice at a huge McDonald's M on someone's back, even more so if the person wearing it is Ronald McDonald's curly ginger daughter. I think something about her image has been seriously mismanaged, hasn't she turned over a new leaf, doesn't she want to take back the Schnee name? Then would it kill her to dress less "ice princess" to go stealth right now? Why is her upcoming design even more haughty ice princess? It looks like it'd fit on her older sister back when she was being a psuedo-antagonist. I can handwave a combat skirt, but not this princess dress, what is that, combat hair extensions? Sure...

Penny and Nora are both quirky genki ginger girls and seeing them in the same space makes it all the more obvious that we've got redundant characters. They're just obligated to follow RWBY because they know them.

I wasn't expecting Penny's dad to be so... rustic and jovial when his first appearance shows him in a lab-like environment and his hand was shaking (with anger?) Not that I want to explore his sad backstory for a volume but as someone who remembers that detail, it's like I missed several episodes even though I know I haven't.

Qrow should have gone bird mode the second they got incapacitated to slip out of those ropes then grab the Relic back. I have no idea why he didn't do this or why he doesn't exploit his bird form more often when there's no downside to using it. Losing the Relic should be the exception to keeping cover, if that's the explanation. It's not like he's telling the strangers "hey this is god-given MAGIC", it would easily pass as a weird semblance.

Qrow might be a loicenced hunter, but did he have a loicence to openly carry an assault spork or, God forbid, a butter knoife in Atlas? I don't think so.
Edit: This clip took me more time to find than I'm willing to admit.

RWBY crew: Mantle's temperatures are sub-zero. It's Antartica-tier cold. It's Siberia on steroids. It's so "fuck you" cold that even Grimm can't spawn there.

Also RWBY crew: *have Blake, who has lived her entire life in tropical/moderate climates, run around for the entire episode looking like this*

7 volumes in and you think they'll start remembering what they said before now?

So I just saw that intro and all I can say is...oof.
I mean, maybe I've been spoiled by watching other anime and their kickass openings, but the animation and framing for this opening is really, really bad. Like, just bad. Compare this to any other anime opening and you'll notice which one is better. FMA, Naruto, Bleach (say what you want about the story, but Bleach anime had some top tier openings). 3-D just isn't helping them either, and it's not helping that they refuse to take advantage of the medium of animation to be creative.

Although I still need to catch up, and even if they aren't logical, I'm gonna miss those old designs, as, at least, they were a logical extension of the original ones.

I really don't like the new ones at all.

Actually I got a question - How would AS-OP know RWBYJNR + Crow, would be in the ship? They're right, but why the hell do they assume the teams were in the ship? The flight and grim attack could've easily been separate incidents.

They didn't know these specific people were in the ship. They explained it as follows: "We heard of a stolen ship landing close to this area and shortly after a lot of fighthing happened with weapons being used without being authorized by Atlas." So while they didn't know WHO was there they knew SOMEBODY was there

overall i have to say my thoughts on this episode are conflicted. I'm glad they brought Penny back finally. We all knew it was gonna happen and the way they did it was the best they could. I also really enjoy that Penny's dad actually recognized Team RWBY after a short moment based on the stuff Penny told him. But i totally agree that it makes no sense that NOBODY ELSE did.

As for the Action scenes they were decent. Not great not horrible but i could live with this.

I just hope they don't drop all the possible subplots they put up this volume...but knowing RT and how bad they are at writing shit they probably will.

overall i'm cautiously optimistic *for now* since this is a lot more enjoyable already than anything in Volume 6 ever was.

Oh and to address the gay pants sized Elephant that left the room: Liebrecht is okay. He's no Vic and you can tell it's a different VA trying to mimic Vic without any problem but if we're stuck without Vic for the rest of RWBY Liebrecht doing this impression is something i'd not be too fussed about.

Actually, they said they got reports for both of them, but even then, it's a logical leap to connect the two events. Especially if grim attacks are as common as they were portrayed (if they need Penny to be the guardian it implies it's a problem that happens regularly), it'd be weird that it wouldn't be a common occurrence that civies would arm themselves in some capacity - Much like how a lot of people do in our world, and sometimes will do so illegally because the process for acquiring a firearm can be a long process.

Unless the people are lemmings, which, after watching RWBY, I'm willing to believe - It'd be retarded to not expect regular people to arm themselves to fight against the wild beasts, especially considering the fact that Grim attacks are possibly a regular occurrence and considering that we're in the slums, a location where you'd imagine illegal weapons would be a more common occurrence. Maybe if it was the team against other people, I'd understand, but against a grim attack?

I dunno, it just seems really off to assume that the As-Op would immediately jump to "these two must be connected", it goes against the background storytelling that they're attempting:

Chalk it up to my interpretation, but Mantle is being portrayed as the Slums, much like the lower levels of Midgar of FF7 - There's graffiti, public drinking, and not really a great place to live - As well as from the promo material, we've seen civilian unrest. The prospect of there being illegal weapons, especially considering the fact that sexual dick name - Ironwood - is practically doing what a tyrant does and doing a lockdown that's affecting the people of Atlas - the prospect of there being people fighting or using illegal (or unauthorized) weapons is only a logical conclusion, especially with the Big Brother vibes that Ironwood is giving.

Hell, we see floating cameras, robotic patrols, even a couple of kids throwing rocks at the cameras. Failing to cooperate with Atlas military personal is a punishable offense. And there are sector Lockdowns. The embargo's got the people of Mantle in a rough patch.

Again, I'm saying this is my interpretation, but when you've got Big Brother staring down the back of you, with surveilence cameras and the embargo's hitting people hard, I'm just saying violence especially violence against black monsters wouldn't be so farfetched - Especially considering how lackluster the Atlas Military has proven itself to be.

I mean if i was told that a stolen ship was seen landing close to an area where also just on that day and never before unauthorized weapon use was conducted i feel that one is logical to connect. It's pretty clear that their law is "It's either my way or the Highway" so we can reasonably assume that people are too scared to break this law because they don't know what the punishment would be. They already have barely enough to scrape by so Penny being legally allowed to protect them (as it seems) is their best bet right now.

Now don't get me wrong i too think this is contrived as fuck. Why would you have a law literally banning your populus from protecting themselves when attacked by monsters? Penny and the Ass-Ops can't be everywhere so it should be reasonable to let people arm themselves

I'd agree with you on the 'people too afraid to break the law", but considering that there's a punishable offense for disobeying orders, which can lead to abusing said power - Which we've seen people willing to be publicly drunk and damage public property (like the cam-bots).

Not to mention, almost anything can be used as a weapon - Like, since there are dust mines, mining equipment can be used as makeshift weapons. Are they unauthorized to be used as weapons?

You know what would've actually been a good excuse for them to bring up to actually connect these two?

If the As-Ops had simply said "We also got footage of an unknown girl destroying our cam bots, and assault and battery against a civilian", both scenes clearly have the bots observing the situations - and live footage would be a thing, especially considering the big brother vibes the show is attempting to give. Hell, it'd actually make logical sense and would at least reinforce the fact that these kids should be arrested outside of "oh, people are being attacked, because our Lazy Ass-Ops can't be bothered to help people"

I'd also like to point out that while weapons can possibly be expensive, we need to remember that every security bot has a gun. And since they straight up suck (I mean, remember Volume 3 when the Robot Soldiers were shooting in the air while ignoring all the grim that were running around them on the ground?) I would imagine some people would steal weapons from them.

I dunno, I just can't imagine that in the time since the fall of beacon, there hasn't been ANY incidents of Atlas citizens fighting back against the Atlas government - Especially with the closing borders.

Then again, time is all wibbly wobbly in RWBY (When you bring in official dates, you have the chance of making plot holes) so who knows how long everything is.
