i mean that's not really a fluke it's just how shit used to go back when entertainment was decent. post covid i don't know if it will ever even happen again, but the star wars craze, up to twilight, (try looking into how the cast were treated during appearances) fifty shades etc. hp was basic (by design) self insert wish fulfillment that attempted to grow with the reader and was originally just a mom making stories for her kids, and then a mom having to make hole proof world building for autists and gay people wanting special treatment. it's not so much as quality as just what spreads to friends etc. and honestly, living through the peak craze, there wasn't much better than hp, because most other easily accessible to kids shit was aimed at the bluey tier audience, and a child isn't going to go for

Didn't called it acceptable. It was one of the many things that GW did to antagonize their fanbase. The price gouging on their minis is really bad, specially considering the steady decrease in quality over the years (seen specially in Abbadon the Armless) and the fact that new rules and games force you to buy new figurines rather than using previous models or mixing pieces from multiple kits or the fact that they capitalize on nostalgia bait to sell poor quality and overpriced kits (seen with the Sororitas).

What i meant to say is that GW is constantly fucking with their customers at every single point. I could also speak of the debacle with Alfabusa or the "Warhammer for kids" spat but i think that if i went into detail over every single shit GW has done over the years i would need 2 or 3 extra posts. And this thread is not for that.
 
Here's a thing I'll say about her: she seems to be someone who tries to live up to the standard set by her own protagonist. In the books if I recall Harry isn't particularly good at anything beyond sports, but the one real virtue he consistently embodies is having the bravery to name the threat that others are too cowardly to name, to tell the necessary truth about that threat to people who don't want to hear it and refuse to believe it, and to face off with it, at times more or less alone when that honesty has made him a social pariah, because it needs to be stopped. And to deadname the prick from time to time for good measure.

In before someone starts bleating about how she hasn't done that with [insert additional cause here]. Not everyone has seen the same shit that you have to form your same stances, and she's got a pretty full plate just trying to take on the child-mutilating postmodern gooner cult that's been capturing and subverting every major field and institution, dismantling our most basic, sacred civil (and human) rights, waging war on reality itself, and busily enshittifying the entire Western world for their own sordid, self-serving purposes.
 
Roald Dahl also wrote Matilda, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, & The BFG all have been turned into movies and stage productions. This doesn't include film screen plays he wrote like the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. Please don't let your ignorance make you think someone was a one hit wonder with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Fair point. But she's also thrown a fair bit of money into the legal funds of people the alphabet mafia have targeted for destruction, which has contributed to some important wins in the UK like clarifying that 'women' actually means 'women' in the law despite the (lucrative) instruction provided by Stonewall to the contrary.

That image is from Matilda, not the Twits. Roald Dahl also wrote some really creepy short horror stories.

I concur with others who have said that HP was simultaneously not that original or great but was also much better than similar books for kids when it came out. I was not that interested in HP when it first released, but around book 3 or so, I finally read the books and kept up as the rest came out. I was not the target audience, but I do occasionally read children's books as an adult (and read tons as a kid) and I thought they were pretty solid. Enjoyable story, plenty of funny bits, etc.. I've always thought the films were a mediocre adaptation, so I hope the TV show is better.

The writing that made me a fan of JKR was her tweets, not her books. It's a bit eerie how life imitated art with Harry constantly dealing with disinformation campaigns. Strange how her former fans ignore that part of the story. Or how they say Rita Skeeter was "transfemme coded" and precisely nothing about how JKR vilified the journalist and the press continuously in the books.

This part is exactly why it became such a huge success and got 100% of children to fucking read, even in North America. You couldn't pay western children in the 80s and 90s to read books until HP came out.

The trade in custom miniatures is massive now. I know a guy with a 3D printing company that started in his bedroom 6-ish years ago who stopped taking orders 2 years ago and now has a 9-month queue at any time. He bought a house with another house next to it to put his work stuff in. Thanks, GW!

I read all of that shit as a kid and loved it. The problem isn't that Roald Dahl is too highbrow for a ten year old, it's that most kids are given unlimited entertainment options that require much less mental effort than reading. Children's authors in the year 2000 were competing with Cartoon Network and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Rowling won that competition, which says a ton about her sheer ability to entertain. The kids who were previously reading Hans Christian Andersen and Dickens were just as captivated as the kids who only read comic books. That's something special.

They're also doing it because it's become a point of debate in the several countries (including parts of the US), thanks to the left pandering to the muslim fear of dogs in public. The left adopts a dog-negative stance, so the right adopts a dog-positive stance. The troons are attempting to co-opt the dog-positive arguments to try and flank the anti-trans position by comparing themselves to dogs, which they think will create a cognitive dissonance. It's amateurish and retarded, but then it's what you'd expect from people who have literally shrunk their brains with mass doses of exogenous hormones.
