I know quite a few people exactly like Watson. It's hard - unless you know people like that - to comprehend just how terrified they are of forming their own opinions and risking disagreeing with their friends/peers. I don't think it's a psychology particularly associated with a particular political persuasion either - such people go with the flow.

You hate J.K. Rowling for calling out troons, I hate J.K. Rowling for making hermione black and pretending that dumbledore was always gay a decade after she wrote the book.
We are not the same.

As for the cast? Rowling may be too rich to care, but the actors still want jobs, and hollywood is run by SJWs who will blacklist them for siding with her. I wouldn't be shocked if most of them secretly agree with everything she says, but they're not allowed to admit that. And as we know, not even the children in the reboot are safe from the wrath of the troons.

Then why wasn't she on the trans rights train the whole time? Watson was big on being a philanthropist and thought leader for quite a few years before she suddenly cared about trans rights. HeForShe is announced at the UN 2014, after she had already made enough of a name for herself in that sort of progressy NGO space for her to get billing at the UN, but she doesn't really come out strongly for Trans rights until after Rowling's 2018 essay. These things don't happen in isolation, And the pivot now, at this time that Harry Potter is becoming relevant again as an IP, seems calculated too. Trans is out of fashion, HP might experience a resurgence that brings more opportunity to her.

And to be clear, I don't think she needs to be cancelled forever or wallow in misery for triangulating against the dominant paradigm and throwing Rowling under the bus. But when it comes to whether Rowling herself is being "absurd" by not accepting this incredibly thin olive branch from Watson, I don't agree. I think Rowling is perfectly in the right not to forgive, and to state as much.

This is all undoubtedly true. Its just hard to respect such lack of spine when it is contrasted by Rowling, Forstater, Berns... etc

I thought that shit was all dumb as fuck but I never hated JK over it. I just thought it was all very silly.

It doesn't actually affect the books if Wizards didn't have toilets and magic'd away their shit or Heim Goldstein the jewiest wizard to ever jew was totally at Hogwarts the whole time guise, it's just JK being goofy.

What's fucked up is like a while back a bunch of troons went to her estate and made death threats at the gate. Thankfully it was locked.

These people are a danger.
She's has her own security staff, including body guards and everything you can think of, do you really believe anyone would leave that gate open. She's a billionaire and she's not stupid.
She's got access to firms we don't even know about and you can rest assured that her security is top notch.

This is not going to be popular here but I think everyone including JKR is being absurd about Emma Watson. She never really understood any of this and never attacked Rowling. She and the others sure owed her gratitude but not to agree with her. (The first HP book even preaches about standing up to your friends when necessary!) None of them are terribly bright or courageous for sure, but they didn't particularly stand out.

Honestly, I have no idea how long it would have taken me to twig if I'd grown up amidst this organised insanity. Most people in the TERF/GC movement started out trans-friendly before they figure out what's what.
The problem is your point about not agreeing with her should also apply to those Watson and the rest did throw their support behind. I suspect they all, likely on advice from their agents, believed they were on that ever popular right side of history and did not particularly engage their brains.

I agree to a degree that they were foolish and poorly informed. But her and Radcliffe's slow shift is not indicative of any actual principles on their part but instead lining up very slightly behind the transgender matters falling out of favour. They go where the wind is blowing and that makes it clear the sort of people they are. I've sympathy, neither was really in a position to lead a charge, but they could have stayed out of the argument rather than pinning their colours to a specific mast.

I don't even care about the books but just look at him. Dude was queer as fuck. A giant homo.

that whole situationship with Grindlewald may have flown over some people's heads as kids
Asides from that I thought the 7th book implying Rita Skeeter's biography included chapter suggesting he diddled Harry was the other dead giveaway that would've (appropriately!) gone over the head of younger readers. She definitely decided on a lot of goofy facts after publishing but the homo Dumbledore subtext was always there. It was just kept appropriately in the background because teachers don't need to be telling their students about their sex lives.

Fucking over your family like that for a friend is not impossible, but it's just not as likely as doing it because you're a horny infatuated teenager. Given two interpretation of the text, you should pick the more realistic, better supported one.

Plus, and I hope you crumpet eaters will excuse me saying this, it was a very British fag romance. It's very Brideshead Revisited, living the ambiguity of it. I figured that was the point, coming out of an allegory for a British boarding school. The number of dudes from that world who wax poetic about the casual homoeroticism of it is significant. Looking at you Dawkins.

I'm being a bit hyperbolic, my apologies. I never cared that much, just thought it was a funny quip.

he's a literal genius alienated from his fairly pedestrian family that finally found a peer who actually understood him. Oops he's gay.

Yes, Hitler.
he didn't know his new friend was hitler tbf, and they were operating at levels of magic that people barely comprehended. At least he finally realized they needed to pump the brakes when his family was threatened. If you go far enough in any ideology you get mass murder.
