Upon (and prior to) its release,
Robyn Hood was met with scathing reviews from numerous online sources and was generally unfavourably received. The show's creator,
Director X
took to social media and accused online critics of having rating-bombed the series due to racism and misogyny. Obviously, not all of these reviews (and especially professional ones) fit the bill... but given what happened with
The Little Mermaid, or
The Last Jedi, or
The Rings of Power, or
Captain Marvel, or any number of recent movies and series with diverse casts that
were explicitly review-bombed by an extremely vocal group of online video creators and their fanbases shoving their racist and sexist railing against minorities and women in Hollywood in the same category as mere "film criticism", there's definitely something to be said about the specific vitriol directed at this particular series, or any work featuring a diverse cast. To quote the man: “The moment they heard Robin Hood was going to be a woman and black and bisexual … they immediately hated it from the moment we announced production." When a lot of said review bombing happened
before the series had even released, it's hard to deny he has a point, even if him directly insulting anyone who left a negative review didn't help his case..
