If you thought you didn't want to live on this planet due to the last few weeks, the hatred looks like it's about to get even worse for you. Why? The Summer Olympics in Rio are about to be underway, of course. With the political turmoil and corruption going on in Brazil right now, what could possibly go wrong?

Oh, boy, this could get interesting. The Olympic Village has been so well-constructed that the toilets are often blocked, wiring is exposed and water leaks are commonplace. The Australian Olympic teams and Hope Solo are among people that are refusing to go anywhere near there for fear of their health and safety.

The part you need to know about is how the mayor of Rio responded. With no sense of irony whatsover, he offered them a kangaroo to make them feel more at home at the Village. Because a kangaroo is going to fix the plumbing and electrical issues the place has.

This may or may not be a complete and utter shitshow, but it's something to definitely keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

DEATH OLYMPICS
(1985)

The year is 2016 and the Olympic Games are being held in Rio de Janeiro. Billy Smith (Sylvester Stallone) and Gunter Mainframe (Arnold Schwarzenegger) have always dreamt of winning Olympic gold, but when they finally get the chance, they find themselves in hell on earth. Can the two friends survive a city filled with armed gangs, faulty architecture and STD-ridden prostitutes? Can they prevent the sinister terror group OSIRIS from destroying the city with a nuke? And can they win gold for their country while preserving their friendship?

>finally catch up on thread

I had no idea I'd ever hear about an event combining kangaroos, brown water, sinks that fall apart, and Russian diplomats fending off muggers with martial arts.

Hey a 19 year old had more accomplishments in her life than me? Better shit all over it because muh feels.

Brazilian here, and also a carioca (a native of the city of Rio de Janeiro); I've been living in Rio my whole life, and, all I can say is, none of this surprises me. We're used to shit being done poorly and then giving trouble, just to waste more money, which goes straight into some of our authorities' pockets.

Everyone and their mother knows (or should know) Brazil is a goddawful country, and Rio de Janeiro is, while popular and indeed naturally gorgeous, jampacked with corruption. Many other cities and states are, the country as a whole is a catastrophic spacetime corruption singularity, but Rio is specially poorly-managed, and finances have been doing terribly for a while now. Criminal activity is absurdly high, God knows how many people die everyday because of it, it's always worrying to go out at certain hours and going certain places. It fucking sucks, and the Olympics did nothing to ease that concern; rather, it only brought more.

I hate the fact we were selected to host the games. We have no infrastructure to do it, and, seriously, there are much bigger problems that require immediate attention and are getting none. It's always going to be this way, though, same thing happened with the World Cup, and it will repeat itself next time something like this happens again (if it ever does). Many people get pissed and complain, then they watch the Opening Ceremony and go GLORIOUS NATION BRAZIL :'DDDD, they have fun watching the games, and then we go back to square one, the Original Clusterfuck of a Trainwreck. Shit is still there, and it still smells, it only got covered for a lil' while.

Many people here have already said what I think, so there's not much else to contribute besides venting a little bit. Also, our mayor, Eduardo Paes, is a giant asshole; thank you for making traffic even worse than what it usually is. When people joke "the Brazilian people are the worst and the best parts of Brazil" they're not lying, especially concerning the worst.

- Our state-funded Hospitals and Universities are terribly underfunded at the moment, as the government is prioritizing the Olympics in spite of everything else. (Source: me. I am a student at UERJ, Rio de Janeiro State University)

I feel your pain. I went to UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro's Federal University, for our fellow non-BRs), and the medical area is a giant shithole. It's saddening to see patients being poorly treated due to lack of the most basic resources.

Is linking to us directly at ED banned or something? srs question
Nah, the server just dies of a heart attack every so often which is why I thought the archive.is version might be a bit more reliable

Fair enough. Didn't mean to sound hostile if it came across that way. Looked into the history of that article, it's a pure 1st-era ED creation, no changes made since then. Still amazed someone went into a day-by-day recount of it. That level of detail only happens to articles like fembusters these days.
