Okay, so I was wrong about the week release window, but we do have more info about the new DLC and update 1.6.
  • The new DLC is Odyssey, which lets you build your own, lesser ships to better traverse the planet and explore derelict stations. Aside from that, we get new biomes, animals, and typical mechanoid buffs.
  • Update 1.6 will contain stuff like performance improvements, temporary caravan camps, better base upgrading and management, and new modding tools.

Hell yeah, the more official shit that replaces poorly coded mods (not that Rimworld is much better) the better. Especially any performance improvements.

Odyssey is about exploration, adventure, and new ways to play
cliffs, chasms, crevasses, and valleys... islands, archipelagos, atolls, peninsulas, and fjords
The pathfinding system is now fully multithreaded
Pitch temporary camps while travelling as a caravan. This creates a playable map for your colonists to eat, stabilize, and regroup when someone's bleeding out, starving, or sick with the flu.
We’ve heard what you were asking for and it made sense. After 10+ years of building RimWorld colonies on a single map, Odyssey opens up an entirely new play style.

Not that excited about the gravship (Rimworld's core is terrestrial, only a sequel or a separate game built around spaceships from the beginning could ever fulfill the iconic player fantasies) but everything else looks like a return to form. It only makes the Anomaly expansion stand out even more, what the hell was that all about? I hope they've truly learned their lesson and from this point on only make expansions that add to the sandbox with new systems and frameworks. Anomaly'll still always sit there as a big fat waste of precious dev time.

Will it be worth $25 to replace free mods with a potentially slightly better optimized official version, though? Everything here is pretty much already in my current modlist.

You won't have to worry about official Rimworld content getting abandoned or worse, pozzed.
Has Rimworld mods getting pozzed been an issue? I'll admit I haven't been involved with the 'Rimworld community' so I don't know what faggotry may be going in there, but the worst I've seen just browsing the Steam workshop is the occasional Ukraine flag colors in thumbnails.

There was the whole controversy with Alice Cecil (tranny modder who got into a spat with Ludeon after the former tried to promote a charity via forced ads in their mods), and the tragedy of Rainbeau Flambe (oldfag Rimworld modder who trooned out some time after 1.0's release).

...you pay for the DLC? :story: Sadly you have to download it somewhere anyway since the game no longer just downloads the DLC but with that single line of "code" preventing you from loading it, but now I don't think they even have said line of code so you can just drop it in.
Should be mentioned the new update adds multithreading to various aspects, performance has improved dramatically (according to them)
Holy shit, thank God. If done right this could be a hell of a boon. Might fuck with mods though if the last attempt at multithreading is any indicator (though to be fair that was also a mod, and we all know how poorly coded mods are).

Never heard of them or any of this, though that is interesting. Looking into this "Alice..."
Kek.
As for this "rainbeau," lol at the tranny character from literal, capital H Hell Steam avatar. Checking their mods, only ever heard of "rumor has it" which I never even used, also they have their storyteller that's based off what I assume was their old character, a manly looking man who is manly. Nothing of value was lost from these two it seems. It also seems that they don't update their mods but chances are someone else who's not a troonerpooner has for them.

Odyssey preview #1: Map features, landmarks, weather and biomes. (my slightly abridged version, read the link for more content.)

Hey everyone! We’re back with the first Odyssey blog post where we take a closer look at the expansion’s new content. We’ll be posting leading up to release - which is in approximately 3 weeks.
Odyssey revamps map generation with over 85 dynamic map features. These include lava caves, obsidian deposits, drug stockpiles, and hippo habitats. Multiple features can be combined together on one map. Some are random, while others depend on their world map location. For example:

River varieties: Rivers come in more shapes and sizes, and they’re affected by their location on the world map. You’ll find confluences at points where rivers meet, deltas where rivers reach the ocean, and islands where the current splits and rejoins. At the river’s source is a headwater - a set of big water pools that flow downstream.

Mixed biomes: With Odyssey, biomes can blend together on a single map. For example, a map might have a temperate forest in the north and a desert in the south. This creates a mix of plants, animals, terrain and threats from both biomes. Features and biomes can combine in countless ways - you might settle on a tropical swamp/forest peninsula with wild cocoa trees, extra fish, and warm, sunny weather.

  • There are over 45 landmarks to explore. I'm not gonna list all of them, but the one that is the most interesting to me is
Oases: Lush, isolated sanctuaries hidden in the desert. Live off the rich soil, swim in the warm water, and carefully harvest the few precious palms. 70cb26ce479cc8596910dbdd60aed9c00d4ad70e.webp

Odyssey adds five new biomes.
Glowforests, Lava fields, Scarlands, Grasslands, and Glacial plains

By far the most interesting feature IMO is;

Dynamic terrain and weather

Odyssey adds several systems to make maps feel more organic and alive.

For example, the terrain changes! Water freezes and melts as the temperature shifts. In winter, thin ice forms over bodies of water. Build a cozy fishing hut on top, cut a hole in the ice, and add a campfire so colonists can fish in warmth all winter long
. No longer will I have to rely on subpar mods that make the water freeze and mess with the terrain masking.

The weather types they listed are; Sandstorms, Torrential rain, Toxic rain, Strong winds, Blizzards, Blind fog, and Overcast skies.

More blog posts on the way

We’re really excited to see the maps and colonies you guys build when you get your hands on Odyssey. Even the dev team is surprised with the maps we make - every map is truly unique.

This is just the first preview, and next week, we’ll look at the gravship and spaaaaaace!

It was really interesting to read this blog. I was not expecting most of these features. Note that it is "the expansion’s new content." So this is most likely not a free update and requires the DLC. It definitely seems to rival biotech for total content so far, and this isn't even the space and exploration stuff.

So.... Shall we take bets on how long the first lets play involving arctic nudist cannibal organ harvesting crackhead cult that lives in ice caves and has trained attack mammoths takes to pop up?

That said I wasn't expecting most of these features. It certainly does alot for the world itself and should keep things interesting, assuming they don't somehow manage to fuck it up. With the ice melting mechanics I wonder if that extends to building bases in ice caves, as in if you do that will trying to heat them to make them more livable cause melting issues and that sort of thing. and will such bases be more vulnerable to fires and fire based weapons

Something tells me this is going to be one of the more expensive expansions though

I've been playing the update 1.6 beta and the performance is noticably much better. Constant 144fps with almost no dips (snow/other weather still seems to knock off some frames)

Odyssey preview #1
This is fantastic, but I'm hesitant about the world generation stuff (not landmarks) being locked behind the paywall. That should've been free with update 1.6

Saw the post on steam but it's more readable here so cheers.

Didn't care much for rivers since I hate building near water. Still, pretty cool, hope it doesn't wreck too much havoc on map gen.

Was not a big fan of the mod that did this before since it either added too much or too little of one biome, still it's a cool feature and it's nice to see it work its way in the base game. Hope there isn't too much jank in the code that fucks with modded biomes.
There are over 45 landmarks to explore.
This is the most important thing for me, in lieu of more interesting and complex faction interaction, because otherwise world traveling is just not worth the time.

God I hope this doesn't fuck with TPS, among other things that would inevitable be janktacular because this is Ludeon after all. It's just a cool feature that can add quite a bit to the game, if you're not constantly dwarfing it up in a mountain.
Something tells me this is going to be one of the more expensive expansions though
Don't matter to me because everything is free when you sail the sea! On a serious note, definitely going to be the price of Anomaly and Biotech given how much BT adds, doubt it be higher.

I shudder a little when I saw the Odyssey reveal, a lot of the features are great but also were taken from many popular mods. And I'd rather have those features being vanilla anyway, but I keep thinking about how this DLC might make a lot of modders and typical Rimworld fan salty... knowing the typical reddit Rimworld now hating to see many mods go obsolete or having to wait for the mods to get updated again. There's a lot of complaints about that.

It's one community that I don't want to be involved with in their 'mod > actual game' attitudes a lot of people have. When is the last time people draw Highmates without cat ears and tails?

Anomaly content was supposedly part of Kickstarter goals wasn't made into the base game, so they'd probably just do it to get over with and complete the initial ideas they had. - Odessey felt like they're finally improving a lot of base gameplay now they no longer has premise to follow.

Has happened before every DLC release, will continue to happen and make people upset for maybe a week at most and then it's business as usual. Hell some people are already updating their mods for 1.6. Honestly if Tynan does a power move and makes his own better version of all of those bloated "Vanilla Expanded" mods I'll buy his book and pay him to sign it. The Rimworld community (especially the modders) are filled with degenerates (because the more fucked something can get, the more faggots, troons, and other problem people will gravitate towards it) and the more they seethe, the better.

So long ago that I legitimately forgot they aren't the neckbeard's fantasy I thought they were.

Looking at SrGrafo comic, it feels like Rimworld was a very different things for the 'community' back then. Now if you look at the subreddit, it's filled with post about custom anime HAR races.
Ah, Rimworld Tales, pretty good read. I think the weebs and coomers have been in Rimworld's autistic artistic scene long before SrGrafo's comic, but it increased significantly after that. Most I've seen are artists with a bit of coomery thankfully, then again I don't browse Loverslab too much. Sadly with his grand mocking out of the Starsector community, the entity known as Turkler has now invaded Rimworld. Knew him somewhat directly but you don't need to have direct contact with him to know that he's a hyper-coomer who wears he degeneracy like a badge of honor and gets pissy quite easily. Avoid at all costs.
