I might be biased since I think the whole concept of a visual novel is kinda stupid, but other than the poor compression I honestly don't see a difference between something like this and a more popular, "accepted" visual novel. Then again, I only really like two visual novels: Hotel Dusk and Phoenix Wright, and those push the definition.

I like them okay, but yeah, most of them are basically a cross between a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book and a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation.

If the story is good enough, I give it a chance. But mostly they're just kind of a novelty.
 
I just don't get how they're popular. I mean they're everywhere and a huge market in Japan. They're barely video games but man do they sell. Maybe it's all ironic, at least in the US?
