If I were the reddit admin team, I'd remove the ability to make subreddits (over, say, 5,000 subscribers) private/approved submitted only on the basis of "synergising communities and allowing for a more diverse and dynamic discussion base". Throw in a couple of new tools for the jannies to deal with brigading but stress that they don't own subreddits and can't unilaterally decide to tank their community because they're angry about something. If you've got a good reason to ask a sub to go private, the entire mod team can go contact an admin to do it for them. Or at least update the ToS to state that privating a subreddit out of protest is a bannable offence because it negatively impacts user experience.

They should really cap the number of subs one person can moderate, say three under 100k or one over 100k. One person with multiple subs that have millions of users each can't possibly manage them all effectively no matter how unemployed and friendless they are.

I'm kinda shocked that the reddit jannies have not just done the "Against Hate Subreddits" method of spamming a subreddit with child porn until the admins are forced to shut it down.

All NoNewNormal needs to do is create a containment "Rant about your subreddit that doesn't repect you" topic and they'll absolutely clean up.

the infamous adria richards incident, yes. one of the first high profile occurences of cancel culture, before that name even caught on.

interestingly, back then reddit users rallied firmly against richards. if the same incident happened today, redditors would all support her instead.
 
Ya know there is really nothing stopping someone from creating subreddits with silly names like r/pedophilepride, closing the subreddit and posting the blackout text. That is certainly a thing that could happen.

You know, this isn't so much of a protest by a bunch of communities against a regime that refuses to take action, but the establishment punishing its users for any suspicion of associating with a problematic subreddit.
